  1. VW2008 in Windows XP

I tried to export some files to DWG for the first time in VW08. Each time the operation would halt and the tool palettes would go blank. I replaced the WorkSpace backup file several times, which restored the palettes, but didn't fix the crash. I have tried various export options including DXF.

In Windows Event Viewer under Applications, I found over a hundred error messages within two minutes. the message was apparently generated by my video graphics card. I recently replaced the video card, because VW was locking up and crashing a lot with the old one. Apparently, VW still doesn't play well with ATI or nVIDIA CAD graphics cards.

The messsage doesn't make any sense to me, so I'm hoping some of the techies here can figure out what went wrong. In VW the error message was: "an internal error ocurred". Not very informative. In Event Viewer the video card message said: "shared heap exhausted or damaged. Local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer". I'm not on a network and I don't have a server, so this doesn't make any sense to me. Does VW use "shared heaps" in shared memory?

Over a hundred red ERROR symbols sounds like a serious problem, and I'd like to know what it is. Meanwhile, I am unable to export to DWG from VW08, and I can't go back to VW12, because I'm using design layer viewports. So I'm stuck with a due date and spinning wheels. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

  2. I put the two files on a CD and carried them to a new iMac machine. One file would open in VW2008, but after export to DWG 2006, the X-ref'd viewport data was missing. Only the added linework on the design layer was displayed. Doesn't VW embed the Xref data into the file upon export to DWG?

The other file from the same job, would not open on the Mac. the rotating rainbow displayed until we had to force quit.

My question now is this: If I export the VW08 files back to VW12 (so I can export DWGs), what will happen to the Design Layer viewports and Xrefs?

  3. When I dock the OIP to the data bars of the primary screen, it obscures about a third of my workspace. Why can't I dock it to the vertical edge of the screen, or to the top edge of the secondary screen? I tried and it doesn't help.

  5. What is being offset in the target document is the linework I drew on the Design Layer on top of the DLVP. I just tried to paste the overlaid lines into the VP as an annotation, but I find that DLVPs don't allow annotation within the VP. So another workaround shot down.

I've got to wrap this thing up today. But I'll be starting another similar project next week. So I'll have to find time to let NNA look at it.

Pat, thanks for the tip about the Update All command. Now I know where to look to update just the referenced document.

  6. When I reply to a topic and then return to the main discussion page, I am automatically logged out. So in order to make another reply, I have to sign-on the the site again. I assume that's not how it's supposed to work.

  7. Pat

Thanks for the suggestions. All I'm trying to do is take a snapshot of something (a DLVP and some overlaid linework---same scale---on the DL)in one file and xref it into another file at a different scale. However, I need the xref'd copy to automatically update, so a bitmap won't work. I may be confusing you with a complex list of workarounds I have tried. the basic idea is very simple. But then, I am new to X-refing in VW.

Since the misalignment is only 2 feet (@ 1/32" scale), I doubt that it has anything to do with the different drawing origins. When I deliberately turn on the design layers linked to the DLVP (in the original document) they are clearly in a different location. This problem is more subtle, but it's a job killer.

I have concluded that there is some kind of bug in the new DLVP function. So I have been experimenting with complex, multi-step workarounds to get the same effect.

By the way, when I export the VW files to DWG for the client, will VW automatically embed the external information? Or will I have to tell the client to reset the path between original and target?

  8. Does the OIP have to be docked directly to the headers of the primary window? Mine is simply at the top left of the secondary screen along with several other palettes What does docking have to do with the Blue Bar Blinking anyway?

  9. The original file is a VP on design layer created from two other layers: a site plan, and a tenant plan. On the third layer the VP is in a different location on the sheet from same area on the referenced design layers and twice the size. But the misalignment is not seen on the original document, only in the X-ref'd target document. If I make a PDF of the original and paste it on the target, it looks fine, but it does not automatically update when I change the original.

This is indeed getting deep. And my wheels are spinning deeper and deeper. I'm on my third workaround, and manual alignment of two VPs may be a potential disaster if the client tries to manipulate the final DWG export. I would prefer for VW to automatically align the layers just as they are in the original.

  10. Can anyone tell me what is going on when a simple operation in VW2008 (in win XP) causes the blue title bar of the window to flash as if it is about to lockup? Sometimes it does lockup, but more often it just trembles and hesitates before executing the command. Something about the calls from VW to the operating system seem to be disturbing the system, and it's freaking me out. So far, VW2008 is much less stable on XP than VW12, in my experience.

  11. VW2008 now has an Import Shapefile menu item. So far I have tried to import three .shp files (just as a test). One opened with linework but no database, even though the data files were in the folder. One didn't successfully import anything. The third, in repeated attempts, immediately crashes (lockup) VectorWorks. This .shp file was copied from an AutoCAD machine.

Has anyone else found the Shapefile import to be buggy?

  12. I have now X-reffed the original 3 layers separately into the new document. But now I have to manually align them, which is a pain. Fortunately, by making two new VPs I can manipulate them with the nudge tool to get them aligned.

I would still like to know if the mis-alignment is a VW glitch, or if I just don't understand how it is supposed to work. If no one else can reproduce this behavior, I can't really submit it as a bug.

  13. The large drawing is for construction-related information. The small drawing is for leasing purposes. Since X-reffing the large VP directly onto the small drawing is not working, I'll take your suggestion and try to recreate the original VP layer-by-layer into the new file. But I still can't imagine why the referenced layers would be offset. Seems to me that there's more to go wrong when X-reffing parts of three external layers, than just one VP on a single layer. Thanks for the help.

  14. I have a Design Layer Viewport on a 30x42 sheet. I made new linework and annotations on the Design Layer (all at 1/16" scale). Now I want to export that design layer to another VW file setup for an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. I setup a new Design Layer VP at 1/32" scale, and use Workgroup Referencing to place the original VP in the new drawing. The only difference is the physical size of the sheet and the scale of the layer.

But in the target VP the linework in the original VP is now misaligned by about 2 feet at 1/32" scale. In the original VP the heavy line was an outline of the gray wall, but on a different layer at the same scale. Now in the new VP the heavy line has shifted about 2 feet to the right as shown in the picture.

  15. VW2008, SP2, R3, build 83388, on Windows XP

Dell 360 Workstation, Pentium 2.8ghz, 1MB DDR SDram,

nVIDIA Quadro FX 3000 graphics card

My first attempts to use a Design Layer Viewport with an external reference have not been successful. The Target document is a 2D only design layer at 1/32" scale with a new VP crop. The referenced document is another Viewport on a Design Layer at 1/16" scale. After import into the the target, the original VP and the original design layer linework are mis-aligned. They are offset by about 2 feet at 1/32" scale. Obviously this is not acceptable. So any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

  16. By installing a new graphics card, my intention was to eliminate all hardware issues. New card, new driver, same old squirrely behavior in VW. Now VW 12 and 13 are the only common denominator. Unless you count the Pentium processor and the Dell chassis, and they work fine with other apps.

I know, I know. I should have bought a Mac in the first place. but I still think it's a software issue.

  17. VW2008, SP2, build 8388, on Windows XP

I didn't find the "Number Stamp" in the default workspace, so I added it from the Legacy file. It now shows sequential numbers, but it won't show the enclosures, even with "Use Shape" and "circle" checked.

Has 2008 relocated the number sequence tool to another place? The legacy tool seems to be broken in 08.

  18. The Edit Viewport dialog has "display using VP attributes" checked. When I uncheck it, and then double click on the VP, the original design layer (at a different scale) is turned on along with the viewport design layer. This only confuses the issue.

Again, what I'm looking for is to go directly from drawing on the 1/16" Design layer with VP background to the same view on the original 1"= 20' Design layer that the VP was cropped from. I haven't yet figured out how to do that. Any ideas???
