  1. Hey all I am constructing a 3D model of an electric guitar. I originally used a curved polyline to create the body shape, worked fine, extruded fine, etc. Recently I tried to blend edges - no go, even a 1mm radius is too large. So I tried constructing the body with arcs (which would also assist with dimensioning process later on) and using the Compose command...confusing, a pain in the bum, no luck either...was just a mess. Any idea on how I can do this - it is not merely a matter of being able to use Blende Egde - it is just trying to find the most efficient way to do the body of the guitar. I fear i've taken too much upon myself Also, is there any way to edit things like solid subtractions after the process has been completed (like, say, the depth of a hole in a cube that was created by Solid Subtraction). Thanks for any help always, nic.
  2. Hey I am trying to loft from a NURBS curve (rectangle) to a NURBS curve (semicircle). The control points need to go from one corner of the rectangle to the centre of the curve on the semicircle; but Vectorworks 10 won't allow it. Yes, the objects are both closed shapes and everything SHOULD work. I tried making the semicircle into a 24-sided figure but still no luck. In desperate need of help thanks a lot! nic.
  3. ccroft nic is just my name well, nickname actually, it's short for nicola. thanks heaps for your suggestions. I checked all of them out (and learnt the hard way about selecting "convert copy to" not just "convert to"). that does seem to be the best way. and thanks for your advice with complicated objects too. I saw that when I ungrouped the guitar line copy - eeek! always, nic.
  4. Thank you both very much for your help I will play around for a bit and see what I can do. I am really wanting to produce good quality line drawings so the workx2 doesn't bother me too much. This is the first time I have used VW for 3D modelling (only ever used Architect), previously I used PTC ProDesktop which is very simple to produce Orthogonals (just select the 3D object and tell the program to convert to lines on a new sheet - you need to delete lines but thats the same with most programs). Anyway the quality on ProD is a little dodgy so I was told to use VW. I'm always in need of more help especially in this particular area so if you've got something else to add, please do always, nic.
  5. Hey, I'm new to VectorWorks so please bear with me My question is this: What is the best way to go about creating dimensioned Orthogonal drawings of good quality in VectorWorks? Say, I have created my 'object' (it's a guitar; and different components have been created on different layers and then combined with a layer link) 3-dimensionally but now I want to do Detail Drawings and disassembled states, all dimensioned and stuff. Does VectorWorks have a function or two to do this? Can you, say, create a polygon from a 3D model and use that (because you cannot dimension 3D objects apparently)? You get the idea... Any help would be greatly appreciated! always, nic. P.S. Any info on creating cross-sections and more specific stuff related to line drawings would be great too
  6. I am new to the 3D modelling side of Vectorworks (have only ever used ARCHITECT). A couple of questions: I may add more later. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. Can you loft between 3D objects? i.e. creating a transition piece between a shin pipe and a thick pipe. Or do you have to do it using 2D poly things (yes *I* know what i'm talking about ) 2. How do you round edges? 3. Why is it, when sometimes I extrude a 2D thing that i create out of lines, it only extrudes the lines (border) even if the entire object is Attributed to be solid? Does it HAVE to be a 2D poly? 4. And your personal opinion: To model an acoustic guitar accurately using Vectorworks: is this a difficult task for a newbie? (I am looking for a challenge by the way). And how would you recommend modelling it? 5. Any other nice little things that you appreciated learning when you began using Vectorworks!?!?!?! Thanks heaps nic.

    Legalities

I might be treading on dangerous territory here *shrug*. But do understand i'm a student and relatively unaware of legalities relating to software like VW. Our school is upgrading to VW10 in 2003. We has a copy of one program (not VW) that is shares around us and we all just install it at home and bring it back. Is this illegal? I don't think the other program requires serial numbers, is that the big issue with VW? Would the school be allowed to distribute one copy of VW to students? Also I presently have an illegal copy of VW because I was just trying it out at home and didn't want to spend the $$'s if it wasn't going to work out. I can't update to VW10 on that, can I? I'll need to buy it from scratch, yes? This may seem like a silly post but im interested because im kinda unaware of all this stuff. Thanks heaps
  8. Hi Titanium I'm running VWA 9.5.1 on a PC Does this help?
  9. Runtime Error the Artiste Very true though. VectorWorks makes many things snazzier than ACAD...yum yum yum. nic.
  10. hey, i posted this in the Architect forum and was told to ask here So here goes... I went and downloaded some 3D thingies to decorate my built environment (plants, a piano, blah blah blah) and they are in the file format *.3ds (3D symbol I suppose?) well my question is, is this filetype compatible with VectorWorks and if so can I import it as...i don't know...as, whatever, just so I can use it ? i've given a few things a go, the simple and obvious things, but VW just says it's an unsupported filetype. And suggestions? It's not a huge deal but it would be nice if I could use them. Thanks! nic.
  11. hey I wasn't quite sure in which "discussion Area" this belongs in...but i'm using it for architect so I put it here I went and downloaded some 3D thingies to decorate my built environment (plants, a piano, blah blah blah) and they are in the file format *.3ds (3D symbol I suppose?) well my question is, is this filetype compatible with VectorWorks and if so can I import it as...i don't know...as, whatever, just so I can use it ? i've given a few things a go, the simple and obvious things, but VW just says it's an unsupported filetype. And suggestions? It's not a huge deal but it would be nice if I could use them. Thanks! nic.
  12. Thanks Dave I'll give those things a go - one of them's bound to work thanks heaps, nic.
  13. Katie, Thanks, that worked for when I created a new text block. But my Resources Pallette (and a couple of other things) still defaults to the unreadable font; even after rebooting the computer. Any ideas? nic.
  14. Yep, it's the right field !
  15. This doesn't apply for all the textures I create but happens a lot with marble and chromatic effects. If i create a new texture via. the Resources Palette to my liking; it looks great in the preview. Marble benchtop. Nice. Then when the texture is applied it renders as grains - like little dots of varying colour - that dont look like the original texture. This happened with small terracotta tiles too that i made...just turned out one big block of terracotta colour. Yes, i did edit the image mapping both a lot smaller and a lot larger and it made no difference to the quality. Can any light be shed on this?? Thanks
  16. hey again - so full of questions today apparently to Export an Image File you need a special component/version of Quicktime for it to work..and also, apparently, theres a way to get that component through something to do with the Animation tool and getting that to download what you need....or something. but does anyone have the accurate instructions on how to do this? I have VW 9.5.1 on PC and basically when i go Export > Image File is doesn't do anything at all. always, nic.
  17. hi everyone when i installed VW9.5.1 on my computer it decided to make my default font one called "Architecture" (and for dimensioning it's "Wingdings" or something crazy) but it turns out that it's basically unreadable and I can't read my resources palette nor anything on my title blocks. anyone know how to set the default font? thanks heaps, nic.
  18. When it comes to bugs in VW10...do they get fixed as time goes on...so if someone buys it in a years time it will have less bugs than if you bought it the day it was released? Or will the bugs only be fixed in the next VW release? And also...what ARE the main bugs that are found in VW10, particularly VW10Architect...i know there's one about textures.... thanks heaps, nic.
  19. Hey We've been working on an architecural assignment and a few people have found that when switching from isometric (or similar) views to Top/Plan projection many of their PIO's and objects from the Libraries simply dissapear. They were mainly windows, doors, & base cabinets but could probably be everything. Can anyone tell me what the cause of this is? nic.
  20. Hey I was wondering if Vectorworks and VW Architect 9.5.1 will be compatible with the new Vectorworks 10 (ie. same file will work on both). Otherwise I will need to upgrade my home computer (i'm a student - big problem as lack of $$'s). Which leads me to my next question: How much is an upgrade from VW 9.5.1 to VW 10 and ... how much is buying the full VW 10 package with Architect and RenderWorks and all that? thanks heaps, nic.
  21. OK...I have ungrouped the roof and deleted the two vertical sides. It has the effect i'm looking for but do you know if it will it cause problems in the future? Last question I promise nic.
  22. Thank you very much! Is there any way I can get rid of the gable end altogether and just have the two sloping sides (as in the picture)? nic.

    Grouped objects

I'm not sure of the technicalities but...it's realted to how the object from the Object Libraries has been constructed by whoever made it. Some allow you to change settings, some dont allow you to edit them, some remain grouped and some ungroup when you Edit Symbol. If you edit symbol and its still ungrouped, just ungroup it yourself. It stays grouped when you Exit Symbol. nic.
  24. Hey everyone I know how to make a basic roof in VW Architect 9.5.1; but i wanted to do something a little mroe complicated and I cant seem to work it out. I want to create a house thats kind of A-frame. I know how to make the walls in an A-frame but I can't adjust the roof to my liking. A good example of what i'm after can be found here: roof sample If it cant be done using the "create roof..." tool...is there anything else you can suggest? -Any- help would be greatly appreciated! nic.
  25. sullymon: if you create a new texture and create it to the transparency/colour your require; then in turn create a new class for your windows that uses that particular texture at creation. put the windows in the class and set the texture to class texture. that *should* give you freedom of adjustment of your windows. make sure Custom Renderworks is set to "use transparency" always, nic.
