  1. Hello all, Looking to start using vectorworks bim. I'm teaching myself and have some questions regarding general principals of setting up drawings. I'm fairly familiar with revit so its not a huge leap. we regularly produce housing sites which currently are produced in the typical way, (from 2D with plans sections and elevations drawn separately). I'd ideally like to produce BIM models of the different housing types, and arrange them by plan, and then be able to generate the elevations and sections from taking views in the model. We generally do not produce a 3d site model as we just view from above. generally our sites are flat or as good as. Ideally the plans sections and elevations would look identical in style to what we currently produce. There is clearly more to elevations than just the faces of the buildings. We'd like to be able to add context, trees cars people etc. These would probably want to be done in 2d to maintain the style of drawings that associated with our current output. In principle would it be ok to set up 2d working planes in front of the 3d elevations to add context? or would this just be crazy way of using BIM? I have trialled it on a simple house and context and it worked, but yet to try it for a site of 50 houses. Or would it be possible to link views from the 3d model to a 2d file and draw over the top to add trees and people? Appreciate your thoughts
  2. hello all me again, and origins again . Thanks for all your help on my previous origin questions. I think I have got to the bottom of what is causing our practice to have issues, and things seem to be running a lot more smoothly for now. I am now comfortable setting up and amended user origins to reflect real world coordinates, etc. however, I have noticed that if I set up my user origin and then use the 'rotate plan' command (available in architect) the origin will change to accommodate the new view. I understand why it would do this. What i don't get is, if I then re-do my user origin to the same offset within that rotated view, it is happy to work at that origin in a rotated view. If i then set my rotation back to zero, it will change the origin again, when in theory I am now in my original view with original origin. If i am wanting to give setting out co-ordinates, it is pretty crucial that these are correct. What do people do to get round this? thanks
  3. Seems like most people use my method shown in the first post its good but its a bit of a weird old tool seems best to do by eye, but will definitely save me a lot of time for quick stuff
  4. Ah great found it! - cheers for your screen shot, managed to identify the tool ! Yes on a mac but I was on the 'visualisation pallette' not 'visualisation tool set' - I hadn't acknowledge the difference. Thanks a lot
  5. is the translated view something people use regularly? or is it common practice just do the method I listed as a fudge in my original post ? thanks
  6. thanks for your reply Art V, sounds simple but am I missing something? does it definitely work for 2d? on my visualisation palette, I have only the option of lights or Camera? the translate view tool (the dashed square with a dot in it) does nothing, until i click new, at which point i get the same 'render works camera can not be used on a sheet layer'
  7. no one? should I assume thats a no then?
  8. From that thread.. You can also use the Translate View tool to pan around within the crop. Often times, we need the crop to say in the same place for page layout purposes, but want another area of the drawing visible within the crop window. The Translate View tool allows you to do this. It works just like panning. This sounds like exactly what I'm after but cant get it to work
  9. Hello all. I have a question I am hoping someone can help with. For sometime I have been doing what feels like a fudge when it comes to viewports, and I want to know if there is a better way. In short, I want to lock the viewport in place, and have its crop correspond with that position. Often times, I will have a sheet set up with a viewport (say of a site plan) and then my key and notes on the annotation layer. I will want to duplicate this sheet several times, (maintaining the notes, viewport size, and annotations) but will want to move the viewport to focus on another part of the site. With my current method, I go to amend crop and focus it on the new area for the new sheet, however, this means I then have to then move the viewport to line up with my sheet, and then amend my annotations to align with their correct position (as they move with the crop shift) it can be quite time consuming for something simple. In autocad, you can set up your viewport location on the page, and then pan around within that crop to highlight the area of the drawing you want. Does Vectorworks have this function? i noticed this thread which hints at 'translated view' as being what I want to use. However, either I cant get it to work properly, or its not for use on 2d drawings (like plans) I get the message "camera cannot be used on sheet layer" Any thoughts? no vids or other threads on this topic it seems. Rex
  10. It is just me who doesn't like Auto Centering Imports because these are a) totally arbitrary and b) I want the "drawing" origin, coordinates and ruler numbers oriented to my building ! Yeah I think this throws me too, doesnt that current method assume that the DWG is always correct? and makes it hard to compare reference points to align in advance of importing
  11. ok chaps thanks for both of your replies! much appreciated. I believe I have it working now. It seems aligned between files and pasting the coordinates into the web finds my site. Will post back if I have any issues when returning the files to the landscape architect thanks again
  12. Thanks for your prompt reply and thanks for autocad speak! I am still a bit confused though. (FYI the nature of the drawing is a development of 40 houses and associated landscaping, which needs to be coordinated with several phases of additional developments by others. just so you get an idea of scale) in this instance - I have a Landscape drawing from a consultant and then several files that our office has produced which we would like referenced alongside the landscape drawing, naturally there is back and forth between us and them as the design evolves. the second option "align with internal origin" sounds like what i would be most comfortable with, but i keep reading that i will experience issues like this. so If i try the first option and follow your helpful guide i dont have much luck . 1) step one import as 'Center first import, align all subsequent imports' and then import the same file again as step 2 (to double check) 2) import subsequent files as the third option 'Align with User Origin' It comes in in a different place to the first file! surely it should overlay them? appreciate your help with this the DWG has the yellow circle lit up in the top right of the rulers lit up when i import it, could this mean anything? thanks
  13. Hello all, Could someone please explain to me what is best practice for managing a file which will have several DWG imports in - e.g survey, Highway proposals and landscape architects drawing etc from various consultants. I have found some old threads on this question but nothing that seems to really clarify my question. As I understand it, it is a bad idea to have your user origin a long way away from the internal origin (0,0) I have read it is best to set all files with a vectorworks internal origin close to the objects within their separate files. as demonstrated here in this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWP7_bmOwFE what I don't understand is, how on earth does collaboration work between different consultants if we are amending the user origin to work within our office? At present, whenever I am sending a file of ours to the landscape architect, they are finding it miles out of position. I come from an autocad background so perhaps I am being a bit of a dinosaur but I am more comfortable with everyone sharing a confirmed reference point (e.g 0,0) some help would be greatly appreciated on how do i import the files so they are to world coordinates? How do i then send my file to others, so that it will align with their document Many thanks edit - I should clarify - it is the collaboration aspect I am having particular difficulty with - i want to be able to send a file back and forth and it always come in the same place for both parties. Thanks again
