  1. As you noted; Sketchup models come in as a group of a bazillion 3D polys, Enter the group (there might be several groups inside) till you get to the polys. select them all and use Modify>Convert>Convert to mesh. This usually works and you get a single Mesh object. After climbing out of the Group go to File>Document Settings>Document Preferences>Display and turn on Mesh Smoothing which is off by default for some reason. This will usually give a good result. Sometimes the mesh will still be faceted. If so, you can try Exporting the mesh as 3DS and re-importing it back in. This will often (but not always) "rebuild" a mesh that didn't work the first time.
  2. One of my students has a Sheet Layer viewport of her interior design. The relevant Design Layer contains several nurbs surface objects. When rendered in Open GL or other solid render modes, everything is correctly visible. When the viewport is rendered in Wireframe or Hidden line, 2 of the 3 surfaces become invisible. All Layer and class visibilities are correct. VW/RW 2010 SP4 Has anyone come across this before?
  3. Not exactly. You dont have to wait for the whole thing to render before the export command. Start it rendering, (I usually wait for a little for it to get started but I dont know if thats necessary) then hit esc to stop the render. Then go to the Export dialogue and do whatever settings you want. The "full" screen image on mine minus pallettes etc is about 1000 pixels across, so a 2000 pixel image is about 4 times that size, so about 4 times longer to export. Note: with the new engine stopping the render with esc is now certain and immediate. :-D
  4. They've done a great job, and remember this is the first version with the new engine. When they've had a little time to bed it it........... :-D
  5. Here are a couple of samples: Final Quality, One Directional light, one HDRI all settings turned up to 11 Exported at 2000 pixels across approx 3 hours to export. It's *much* quicker if the curvy reflective/ transparent objects are removed I haven't tried with lower quality settings to see what the time difference would be.   6. Shaun, the development of pure 3D modelling is always going to be a "second" priority for VW as far as I can see, -regardless of what some of us would like. The extinction of Mechanical makes that fairly clear. From my recollection of the press release at the time, "the guy they hired" was brought in to develop "BIM" functionality. Read; Architecture, read Walls doors and windows etc, read not 3D modelling. IE, He wasn't brought in to change things, he was brought in to promote NV's primary market segment: Architecture. VW is never going to be a Modeller "like" Solidworks. That's my own take on things anyway.
  7. In 2011 they can but it's a bit of a PITA because of the tendency for the tools to re-activate the layer plane when picked. Try this, Make a Plane and save it in the W.P. pallette Make the working plane mode active, Select the bolt tool; the layer plane will become active again }:-( Double click the saved working plane; it should become active and the bolt tool stay selected. Place the bolt. Doesn't always work, and I haven't found a repeatable pattern why or when......

  9. Are you sure Peter? Dave's method is to take the colour away in the rendering mode. How could you get this to produce a white building in a full colour landscape? Stacked Viewports? Aligned layers with Unified View turned off? haven't had time to try
  10. My desires are much like yours Shaun, but I doubt that VW will ever "catch up" with programs like Solid Edge in the way that you want. VW is fundamentally intended for architecture (with the landmark and spotlight as alternative add-ons). The programming resources devoted to the sort of "engineering" modelling capabilities you want are probably always going to come second to the capabilities for the major VW markets of Building, Landscape and Entertainment. Personally I would like to see VW become more like SpaceClaim and less like Revit/ Archicad but I don't have any expectation that this will ever happen. I would say that NV have defined their markets and that's where their focus will stay for the forseeable future.
  11. The old "Artistic" modes were part of the Lightworks engine package. As this is now replaced by the C4D engine, the "Artistic" modes are the ones supplied with it. Apart from licencing issues I doubt it would be possible to employ the Lightworks features into another rendering engine.
  12. In conventional drafting of isometric dimensions the text is deliberately lettered so that it appears to lie in the plane formed by the dimension and witness lines, and not on an arbitrary (screen) plane

  14. When you say "take a shot" do you mean to end up with an image file? eg jpg? If so. make sure the view is rendered in the mode you want and go to File> export> export image file. select from the various options. N.
  15. I haven't found this. The image shows a stock image prop and lights with Lit Fog. It's behaving as expected. (but it's not a very complex scene)
  16. Well, isn't that dull............ I had a quick go at ungrouping a door then customising it and turning it into a symbol again to use with the Use Symbol Geometry thing. It wouldn't cut the wall properly in Top/Plan. mmmmmm...... cheers
  17. Thanks bcd, I can applly the textures by class ok, it's mapping them I can't work out. IE nominating the start of the texture and the size and orientation as you would with a standard object cheers
  18. Previous versions had the Help as a PDF in te Additional Documentation folder, but it doesn't seem to be there with 2010. Anyone know where the PDF is located now? thanks, N.
  19. I need to map textures on to the faces of doors from the door Plug in Object Assigning the texture by class is the easy bit but I cant find anything in the help about mapping PIOs any ideas? thanks N.
  20. If your cutting a hole through an extruded face it's sometimes easier to just change the original poly rather than the additional subtract solids steps.
  21. Yes you should. much quicker and easier to draw and edit with Surfaces. Note also: If you have a series of objects which enclose a space you nominate the specific boundaries and choose Modify> Combine into Surface, or use the Paint Bucket mode of the Polygon tool to make a new surface to fill

  23. The cursor cues *say* that it's vertical,and it looks vertical but as mike and the others have said, it's not actually. 1mm out N.
  24. The Base Cabinet units have lots of settings but you may still not get what you want. EG If you make a unit 3m long you still only have the choice of 1 or 2 doors. On the other hand they are Hybrids and have a 2D repesentation. Cabinets are usually just "boxes" and I find it easier to just use the 3D tools to model what I want out of extrudes etc and add the handles etc I want, where I want them, then make that into a Hybrid Symbol. This is quicker usually than setting all the settings to get the desired configuration. YMMV N.
