  1. The other thing that could make associative dimensions more meaningful as well, is that if you edit the lenght of the dimension it should effect the object it is linked to. So if we dimension say a window in a wall editing the dimension will tweak the window position in the wall, instead of the current behaviour of just loosing association.
  2. I agree really cool tech, and with VW being a main productivity Application to most people using it, inclusion is would be a good thing. OH and some automator actions while we're at it. a design sheet/ save view activator, print/pdf and export actions come to mind. [ 05-25-2005, 09:28 PM: Message edited by: iboymatt ]
  3. One option would be to make a record to store your own unique indentifier then write this indentifier into your data file. the danger here is this can be altered by the user, which can stuff up your system.
  4. Just a thought... If you take the Draw it once, then WGR or viewport it so allot of the time we draw with the layer scales set to say 1:100 but zoom in to part an add info that may only appear at say 1:20. To that end the layer scale of design layers is still important but also a little fluid. So i think it might be useful and intuitive if there was a view option for WYSIWYG based on a drawing scale that is closet to the current zoom factor, not just the set layer scale. I effect we do this already by using WGR's to pull a view of some layers into a file where the layer scale is changed. It could also be done with Layer Links. That said i still think it would be a great feature to have, applied to everyday drawing views. The only problem would be how it treats Text and scale dependant PIO's (i.e. drawing labels and the like).
  5. Grant, I think your rigth about there not being "The Way", the flexiblity is sort of a double edged sword in that respect. Its always good to have, but it does mean there are ways of doing things that will mean you can't archive the result you want or you start using some convoluted work arround to get the job done. So the idea of NNA bundling a couple of set ups used in real practice as a guide is really good. It might also be good if NNA could document "the way" they base the design of the programme on, as a starting point. I know there is set up functions in the programme, but a complete sample document would be a realy bonus. Hey sounds like a good book title... "seven ways of sucessful vectorworkers" ;-)
  6. I would have to concur with Ion, only just started testing on a non-critical machine (i.e. my home computer) and VW feels snappier. I'm also on 1Ghz G4. But will post more as if anything shows up.
  7. Maybe the Redo command could be upgraded too Redo/Repeat after all once you do something new there is nothing the Redo, till you undo.

    layers

There is nothing wrong with the way you are working, we also use layers to define more discrete regions with in a building level. The tools you might need is either... -Align layer view - which will move all the layers into the same 3d view as the active layer. -viewports- If you use a viewport that sees all the layers then moving where that viewport looks will show all layers in 3d. -Layer Links- the other option is to have extar layer for a model and add layer links for each of the layers of the model. each has advantages and same shortcoming, so it's best to have a play with each to find which suits you best.
  9. Live Sections don't need to based on the 3d model, well a least not purely. We already have a live section of sorts, after all plans are just a section taken horizontally not vertically and plans are live. So take that same idea turn it 90? and we have a live section. So if we add a section hybrid to objects along existing plan hybrid and 3d inforamtion. The programme is along way to good usable live sections. Indeed somethings likes walls may not even need additional behaviour. Thing like cassment windows in plan are just awning windows in section with a sill section to replace one of the jambs. Things like concrete slabs that have a multitude of set-downs ,drop beams and upturns may need to be modeled. Yet a suspended ceiling could be use the same set up as walls turned 90?, and butt jointed to the walls of the room.
  10. Maybe not as easy as it could be, but it is possible already. Most simple Scripts can convert to Menu Command Plug-ins. Then add them to your workspace. You can even create a new Scripts menu to keep them all in one place. Which of coarse would make a great feature if the programme could automatically do this for you.
  11. Another reason is to still have standard, boring, plane rectangles is surely this day they require very little work to maintain the code. Indeed it would be more work to replace them than to keep them. And remember polygon points need to store more than x and y values, but point types as well. I don't think we should under-estimate the advantage of having simple primitives like rectangles, i mean i know the average file i deal with must have tens of thousands of them by the time you include all the ones in symbols and PIO. Doubling or more the data needed for that many items must knock the file size up and the speed down. The situation is worse in the case of rounded rectangles, which when drawn by screen renderers like Apple's Quickdraw take 3 points of data, to do as a polygon take at least 8 points. On saying this improving the function of standard rectangles so that if clicked with 2d reshape tool we where presented with a dialogue box asking if we would like the convert to polygon? OK/Cancel, instead of the standard "sorry dave i can't let you do that", that would be a good thing.
  12. Please don't hurt me for mentioning this too late to save Data on the old drive. A mac with a non-booting hard drive will likely still Boot in Target Mode. So if you have another computer with firewire, and a spare drive hanging around. Target mode will let copy data to another computer or hard drive. Under Mac OS X everything should be in either the User folders or the Application folders, both of which can be copied without much drama. Sure it's best to do fresh installs for as much as possible, but how many of us don't realise to back up workspaces, or other templete files we have in the VW folder till it's to late.
  13. Not just lines, either. Why can't attributes for all objects be edited in the info palette?
  14. Christiaan, I'm saying this without testing it, having not got my hands on tiger just as yet. Vectorworks already supports Applescript with the DoScript() command this would allow you to build some Automater actions to add to your workflows. Hopefully Vectordepot or similar will open a market for actions. On the other hand it would be great if NNA did release some standalone actions to sit in workflows without the need to open the full version of vectorworks to get them to work. the ones that come to mind are:- -file import, particularly DWG. -save view re-caller to work with.... -rendering -printing That's an add on package i'd pay for without question. Matt
  15. Eddie, We run Repair Disk permissions on a regular basis from with in the system, i've even set up it as one of the cron scripts, and find it gives good stabity. Just curious i've tried in the pass to run it from a boot cd but got the error message that it can only be run on the active system disk. Any special tricks to run it out of system? Does it make much difference over runing it with in the system? Matt

  17. I too can think of many times this would be useful, i would even venture to say more useful than the existing two options. One of those best of both worlds situations.
  18. ;-) I was going to launch in to the usual system management thing about classes being to easy to make a mess of already. Then i made a new symbol and it struck me what you may have meant. It would good if there was the option to type in a new class name, as well as, the options to nominate an existing class or to use default, like we have now. On the same track it might be good to get rid of the extra dialog for "options" and bring it all in to a single dialog box. I would doubt if there was a single symbol I've created in the last year where i didn't alter the options.
  19. Jim, Vectorworks only takes direct advantage of Dual Processor for Renderworks rendering. That said, the system should take advantage by freeing up the one processor from other tasks like email and iTunes. So you can get more out of the processor VW is using. Matt
  20. On WGR a better idea may be to consider breaking the reference. One of the options when deleting a reference is to keep all the information in the File. Althought this is not nessary as Vectorworks keeps a complete copy of the referenced material in the file so that if it can't find a referenced file it can just keep showing the last copy. On the notes database, i'm not sure on this one, can someone else confirm what happens here?

"There has to be a better way..." I think the "wishlist" items in this thread are good and hope the good people at NNA are taking notice.
  22. For version 11 new features in Vectorscript there is an option for event handling scripts. the Online help points to the website for documentation and examples neither of which are to found. Has any one come across information on this new feature?
  23. It's still very high up on a lot of peoples wishlist. like the other two items still high on peoples wishlist. my list would be 1. Improved Referencing 2. 2d user rotatable work space 3. Corpable layer links or Design layer viewports. Maybe v12 will show some promiss in these areas.
  24. The other possiblity is you need 2d user rotateable view of the drawing space, another feature MicroStation has had since 1990something. Of coarse a combination of the two would be the best of all.
  25. One thing to try.. For some reason vectorworks doesn't automaticaly tag it's files with an extension on Mac os X. This is not an issue inside a single mac, but most network protocols leave behind the old style mac os 9 resource file which would normally carry the information about which programme the file belongs to. Try tagging the file '.mcd' before attaching to the email.
