Have you got it installed on an SSD? I have yet to test it in earnest, but I think that uninstalling (from HD) and installing to the SSD on my laptop has made a difference to issues I was having.

The new Dell has only a SSD, and it runs Revit at lightning speed, much heavier lifting there. And VW 2023 runs fine on it.

The IT person reset the machine for me, removing everything and reinstalling Windows 11 and my softwares. Vectorworks 2024 has been running as expected after a day of use. Happy it's fixed, though definitely annoyed with Dell for shipping something that wasn't set up properly, and will be canceling their unhelpful tech support. Thanks to everyone here for your comments on this.

@Raja ok, good. Let me know if you have issues finding the pivot door in Windoor. Windoor is great because it offers many doors and windows that are not currently available with native VW items.

@Kevin K I got the Windoor set up and have the pivot door in, which is super awesome! I'm noticing though that there aren't any options for the Door and Window ID Symbols. In the tutorials when  you click on Door ID Symbol, there is a whole list of tag styles to pick from. When I click on it on my machine it says "Resource list is empty". Have you encountered this/ any ideas on how to get them to show up? It would be a lot better to not have to hand draw in a door tag...

    Thanks again!!

  4. Hey thanks, I appreciate that and I'll add it to the list.

I ran into several more error messages and then the .exe files to uninstall VW were missing, apparently I deleted them without knowing it, and I had to do actual work; so I closed the machine and started working on my old Macbook Pro 2017 instead.

I have a quote from an IT person to come to my house to try to help with the new Dell. I've only used PCs in offices where an IT person did all of the stuff that is done for me in the background on Macs, and I seem to make it worse and worse when I try to fix things. It's really frustrating since basically all architecture software is made for PCs except VW and I need some of those programs.

Thank you, I really appreciate your feedback. It just crashed again just trying to switch from one sheet layer to another. I contacted Tech Support last week and uploaded a sample file, the crash reports and explanation of what's happening. Waiting to hear back and will bug them again.

I will try your fixes in the meantime. There's not anti-virus on the machine other than what is built into Windows.

Tough transition from a Mac! Fingers crossed!

Update: after 2 hours of Dell tech support and 2 hours of Vectorworks tech support today, both remote operating my machine and troubleshooting, including the items suggested here, there is no clear source of the problem or a solution.  VW has sent the issue to engineering. Likely next step is to completely wipe the machine clean and reinstall Windows OS,  and everything else.

VW tech support did note that 8/10 times for PC users, switching the graphics to the discreet GPU is the answer, but in this case it didn't help. I am uninstalling and reinstalling the program for a 3rd time out of desperation.

Will post again when a solution is found.

This is not the normal experience with VW2024. There may have been a couple of others who have reported similar results, but not many.

I recommend that you contact Technical Support directly as this will be very hard to work through on the forum.

But a couple of things to try over the weekend:

Make sure VW is set to use your graphics card and not the on-board built in graphics

Boot into Safe Mode and see if VW runs OK.

    Reinstall with Anti-virus turned off.

Turn off any Graphics accelerator or helper software. I think one of the NVIDIA gamer patches impacted VW.

    Good luck.

  7. Spent all day trying to use, restarting, uninstalling, and now reinstalling 2024. It is up to date.

Literally every action in this program lags so much that the software is unusable. Starting the program takes 2+ minutes. Switching from one sheet layer to the next takes 20 seconds with "viewport caching" notification on the screen. Creating a new sheet layer takes minutes. Selecting a detail callout takes 5 seconds. And so on. I have a 3 month old laptop with killer specs that can run VW 2023, Revit, Bluebeam Revu, Word, Google Drive and Photoshop all at one time without issue.

Any fixes? Does it calm down after a week?

  8. Great posts, interesting to see what we are struggling with. This may have already been covered, but one thing that consistently drives me crazy (I have not yet upgraded to 2024, maybe it's fixed??) is the inability to dash the handrails with the rest of the stair. So the stair above or below the cut line basically should always be shown as dashed, yet this is never a default setting, and then when you show the dashed stair below or above cut line, the railing is solid instead of dashed. Making the handrail tool utterly useless.

The stair tool has so much promise but at the same time it has both too many and not enough features...

Thanks for the responses guys, I don't think I properly conveyed my issue in the original post.

There's no issue with the scale or the units in the actual design layers themselves. The drawings themselves are fine.

The situation is that we're trying to make a very small change to an annotation, basically just editing a dimension that is incorrect on a dwg file created by others.

The problem is that the dimensions are annotated in the equivalent to the Vectorworks sheet layer. Now Vectorworks sheet layers are always 1:1 (Unless some genius can tell me how to change this). When the file is imported to Vectorworks the dimensions now measure the space at 1:1.

So for example, I import a drawing which is drawn at 1:10. There's a dimension which is 380mm, when I go into the design layer, this is correct.

The actual dimension annotation however is drawn in the screen layer, and measures a space which is now at 1:1. So the annotation displays 38mm in Vectorworks instead of 380mm.

(Which is what is shown in the first screenshot above)

    Hopefully this clarifies my query.

Did you ever find a solution to this? We are having this same problem with imported dimensions. They indicate the correct measurement but graphically look huge, presumably 1:1 with witness lines that are off, massive ticks and the dimensions are not parallel to the drawing angle itself. New dimensions default to the same messed up style. It's illegible.

In the Design Day Live Europe Q&A a question about future development of windows, doors and stairs was answered by way of pointing out that Vectorworks is always working on incremental updates to these tools and prioritising which updates to include.

Windows, doors and stairs are at the core of our experience, but these tools have been missing key features for many years.

Can we have a release where major updates to these tools—instead of incremental updates—are one of the biggest focuses of the release?

Yes Please. Major updates really needed.

  11. Wish list: Stair tool improvements.

Why does the Stair object constantly change to an uneditable non-stair object and then have to be rebuilt? This is a major bug in our office.

Why can't we adjust the line styles of the handrail/ guardrail to be dashed when above or below? Why can't we wrap the handrail to the wall or turn underneath a stair as code requires? Why can't we stop the handrail at the landings? And so on.

  12. Stair tool still causing problems in 2020. When I open my 2018 file in 2020 I'm getting this red error message at the stair regarding the posts. A similar error message occurred between 2018 and 2019 stair objects and I had to rebuild all of the stairs. Anyone else having this problem? How to resolve?

  13. Yep a LOT of problems with 2019 here as well. I've got two new projects in 2019, what a mistake. Program constantly quits out of the blue. Serious rendering issues. Bitmaps show up black until zoom way in. Section viewports look normal but zoom in or out and suddenly all you can see is a few weird little lines, it basically disappears. If you go in to edit section and back out, it renders normally, until zoom in and out again....can't print this way. VW please don't release new versions that are so buggy, what an incredible time-waster. I can't bill my clients for this ridiculousness. Not putting any other projects on 2019 until it's normal.
