  1. Hi all,

    I am creating section viewports through various CSG solids, but the 'Hidden line' rendered viewports are not rendering cleanly. I am using the 'original attributes' feature.

    Some of the solid sectioned objects have little triangular artifacts missing from them, and other hollow pieces are rendered with artifacts infilling the what should be the void.

    Has any one else seen anything similar?

  2. Thanks Travis, that helps me out. Maybe my thinking is flawed though.. I thought I had read that windows were made of boolean geometry, but when I ungroup I just get a few extrusions. And they don't want to be converted to Generic Solids. Also the file size doesn't seem to change much.

  3. Hi all,

    I am trying to go down the BIM route as far as is possible. I am finding though that putting in lots of VW 12 Architect's window tool's objects is really bloating my file size and slowing things down.

    I know that I can make one window a symbol and then repeat that to cut down file size, but I'm not convinced that it actually improves performance when manipulating the model (eg. 'cut viewport section' etc.).

    How would I go about changing the PIO into a static symbol (ie one that is no longer parametric and doesn't contain a lot of boolean geometry) but that maintains the right style attributes for the various parts of the window (ie. glass, muntins etc.) and that appears 2D on the plan?

    Also, will this significantly improve the performance of my files? I am finding v12 a little bit slow in this regard.

  4. Hi Dave,

    If

    1) I start with an empty file in VW Basic 11.5.1

    2) Draw a wall

    3) Insert a window from the VW Architect Sampler

    4) Turn on Class Settings

    then the popup class is "<< container class >>".

    However, "<< container class >>" doesn't appear in the main class list.

    If I then open that file in Architect 12.0.1 then "<< container class >>" appears in the main class list.

    It doesn't seem to happen with doors.

    In the Finder it says that the VW Architect Sampler is a VW10 document.

  5. I have also noticed this in a file updated to VW 12.0.1 Arch from 11.5.1 Basic, and I'm on the Mac.

    But, with all layers on and only that class on nothing shows. It does seem to be empty.

    Hasn't caused me any problems,

  6. I run an OS X machine with several 'user' and one 'admin' account. I have got VW 12.0.1 Architect installed and the SketchUp plugin. The plugin runs fine in the admin account, but simply does nothing in the user accounts. I'm guessing this must be a permissions problem, but which permissions should I change to get the plugin to work in my normal accounts?

  7. I love VectorWorks presentation capabilities, it is great at producing traditional projections from a 3D model, and the new perspective section adds greatly to that.

    BUT I would love to see a true 'plan oblique' axonometric view.

    That is

    1) The plan turned 45?

    2) All heights drawn at full scale straight down the y axis

    I know that is very similar to the plan oblique cavalier 45?, but the rotation is critical to architects.

    Would that be hard to implement?

    If so, could we have the ability to rotate viewports without their contents automatically 'righting' themselves instead?

    I think it would really round off VectorWorks' projections from 3D models for architects. And now that laying out presentation sheets is so easy in VectorWorks, turning the paper round isn't a great option.

  8. Thanks Andrew. That really helps just to get a handle on what's going on.

    I still find it a bit odd that two similar walls with the same symbols in, cut by the same 3D section line render totally differently. One showing all of the polygon edges, the other a clean hidden line render as I would hope (and expect) it to turn out.

    The only difference is that second is a newly drawn wall, the other a wall that has been joined, had it's fill changed a few times, and possible been healed (but nothing out of the ordinary for a wall, right?)

    Anyway, I'll probably get down to redrawing the misbehaving walls to see if that helps me. If not, I'm going to be eating baked beans for two months and skipping bus fares.

  9. if that is the case, could someone that uses live sections in V12 say if that deals with the issue?

    The only reason that I mention the arched windows is that the curve creates lots of polygons.

    Strangely though, if I copy a wall that does this into a new file, draw a new wall in that file and copy symbols from the old wall into the new one then the old wall still makes polygons, but the new one doesn't. Why might that be?

  10. Hi, I have a 3D model made using walls and PIO windows. I have cut a 3D section from it and rendered using Hidden Line. My walls are covered with polygon edges. Especially as I have arched windows. I can't use this as I have modelled and cut a section to save time, not to create more work for myself clearing it up.

    I have searched the forums on this and come up with several posts, but none of them seem to give a clear reason for why this happens or if there is a work around. It even seems unclear to me if VW 12 deals with this in a better way.

    The upgrade to 12 is a very expensive option for me and one I would prefer to avoid, so other solutions prefered. Thanks, Nick

  11. I have read Robert Anderson's post on achieving a 'plan oblique axonometric' by printing out a plan view set to cavalier and rotating the paper. And I suggested the same thing in a different post. But as I lay out my drawing sheets in VectorWorks (along with text, etc.) physically rotating the paper is not an option. Is there no way to achieve a 'plan oblique axonometric' within VectorWorks, preferably within a viewport?

  12. Sorry Katie, I'm not sure I understand you. I am printing at 100% as far as I know.

    I have "Page Setup" a custom paper size of 297x840mm (which is equivalent to a sheet of A1 paper divided in half along its length) I have then "Set Print Area..." to two pages/tiles. Then once they are printed out I tape the two pages (pieces of paper) together to get an A1 drawing.

    I haven't changed any percentages.

    I have tried printing out just one page at a time but get the same result.

    If I change the "Page Setup" to A4, and "Set Print Area" to a single tile, and reposition that to cover the part that is misbehaving, then the line prints out ok.

    Change the "Page Setup" and "Set Print Area" back again, and the line disappears again.

    VW 11.5.1 Basic

    OS X 10.4.3

    Printer is Epson Stylus Photo 1290 using the Epson drivers bundled with Tiger (not Gimp). I am printing using the 'Stylus Photo 1290(Maximum)' setting to two pages 297mm x 840mm (half A1).

    I have a drawing that I am printing across two pages. It is essentially one viewport that spans a double page area. The drawing is lots of circles with dimension lines. The strange thing is that when I print it, one circle (that spans both pages) only prints on the second page. Every other circle prints fine, that circle prints fine on page two, but simply isn't there on page one. Its dimension line prints fine, but the circle doesn't.

    If I simply change the page size, then the circle prints. Change the page size back again, and that single circle doesn't print again. Very weird.

    Any ideas? Nick

  15. This is an old topic I know, but one that was puzzling me, so in case anyone needs this in future...

    To do what Rok was suggesting (a 'plan/elevation oblique' in Ching's terms):

    1) select a straight 'Standard View' (i.e. 'top' if you want a true plan)

    2) select an oblique 'Projection' (e.g. 'oblique cavalier 45')

    Simple... a true plan and true lengths for the third dimension suitable for scaling from.

    To choose which direction the oblique comes off at (i.e. which sides of the object are shown) use the 'Rotate 3D View...' command to rotate the plan relative to the direction of the oblique.

    **Don't use any of the isometric views and/or orthographic projections, and don't try combining an isometric view with an oblique projection***

    (all things that I tried several times over)

    True the oblique lines don't run vertically from a plan turned 45o, but turn the piece of paper round and the effect is the same.

  16. Hi all, I've created a floor slab hybrid object, then cut a hole in it by editing the floor and drawing the polygon hole. If I change my mind though, how do I 'heal' the slab again? Editing the floor lets me move polygon vertices around, but it won't let me delete vertices to make the hole disappear.

    Any tips?

  17. Thanks so much for putting that together, I'll tuck in and see how I get on. I've understood the IVM, I was looking for something that would let me deal with that. At some point though I'm really going to have to brush up on my maths.

  18. islandmon, I'm sitting here with my copy of "A Fuller Explanation" by Amy C. Edmondson right now and have many tensegrities lying around the house. I have also done projects on logarithmic spirals. What I am looking for is a way to put that geometry/equations into the computer. So I suppose the piece of your answer that I am interested in is where you "work out the vertex placement details".

    Also is there software out there for computing tensegrities? At the moment all I have is sticks and string and a lot of trial and error.
