The only time I ever have problems with a file not coming in at hte right spot or origin, is if the cad operator you are getting the file from changes thier origin point. Normally, they don't change and it is very convenient to get in the right spot. Iboymatt's sol;oution seems to be the best when this happens, but then you may need to manually insert each time.

I started using the saved sheets before the viewports came along. I don't know if this is the way to go, or if I'm behind here. The way the saved sheets works for me, is that I have one with all the classes turned on so that if the new file has items on another class that I previoulsy turned off, I can find it. It seems that no matter how hard one tries, it is easy to put items on the wrong layer or class. So I use it mainly for verifying the new file against the old. It seems that with work grouop referncing, I can maybe do this this prior to referencing to my drawing and then update the referencing.
Delmer, is this how you would use the work group referencing? if the classes are adjusted in the referenced file, then I don't have to worry about them in my main file? Does the invisible classes in the referenced file show up in my main file?

For number 2, I don't know how that would happen. Even if you have 'show, snap, modify layers' on, it still should only copy to one layer.

I have been importing on a new design layer and then using saved sheets to adjust which classes to turn off and on. This is a bit time consumong, but works oif there are a lot of classes you want to adjust (visibility, colour, line weight, etc.). Delmer, the work group referencing sounds good. How is this done? can you also save class assignments with this?

Jan, when selecting all and exporting symbols to groups and then ungrouping, you would also loose all your symbols which would export fine. I don't know how to write macros. I've found that for the most part VW is good for those of us that don't really want to get into programming or macros. How would I write a macro to find all groups, including those within symbols and ungroup them?
I also agree that the exporting portion should include options as Mike suggested. Right now, I feel that VW has gone backwards in this respect, by losing part of the export procedure that worked fine to address a problem that some users have found.

I just want to reiterate the problem we have with goups converted to autocad as numbered blocks (in version VW11). We have some large projects coming up that we will use all our cad operators (both vectorworks and autocad), plus we will need to exchange a lot of files with other consultants that are working in autocad. We will be working seaparately on parts of the drawings and then put them together for the final set which may be either in autocad or vectorworks. This project would probably require a lot of changing back and forth. Since a lot of our details, symbols, etc. has many groups within them, it would be very time consuming to ungroup everything and we would probably miss some. Also, xreferencing small pieces that would need to be combined into one final drawing would end up with the same problem - numbered blocks in new files that would be changed with earlier numbered blocks. This could be a real nightmare with coordination if the other consultants do not xref our drawings, but instead want to insert them.
Also, changing back to VW10 and then converting to autocad loses the advantages of converting from VW11. Is there any script or something we can do that would either find all groups in a drawing to ungroup them or name those groups? Ungrouping would be the best solution I think.
Do you know why some autocad blocks import as groups and some as symbols into vectorworks? Before, I didn't worry about that, but now with the problem in naming groups, this could become a real issue when changing files back and forth.

You can also use layers colours in the document preferences. make the layer the jpg is on a light grey colour as the layer colour. This should work. I have used this when I want to 'draw' over the image without having the image too strong.

I mentioned 'object from polygon' instead of 'polyline' in my question above. When using the 'objects from polyline' tool, how do you attribute a saved stipple setting to the object? Or, if you decided you want to change a bunch of stipple objects to another setting, how would you do that without going through everything in the dialogue box each time?

Is there a way to use saved stipple settings after you have drawn the polygons? I know you can use the saved settings by clicking on them and then drawing the polygon. Also, you can draw a polygon and use the objects from polygon tool to convert to stipples, but here there is no choice to use a saved stipple setting. It would be very nice to draw all the polygons first, make adjustments where required and then use whatever saved stipple setting you would like to the polygon, or if you want to change the setting or use another setting, to click on a stipple object and switch settings without having to go to the dialogue box to make adjustments.

I agree with Tvetter. If you are sharing files with other disciplines, then annotating and adding notes in the viewport can be a real pain. The only notes, etc. I usually add are notes specific for a sketch that is not part of the overall drawing. For example, creating a sketch for Site Instructions or Change Orders. Here, the annotations come in real handy, as they won't show up if you need to create as-builts later, but all the changes you made are already incorporated.
In the end, it all depends on how you work and what you want to create as an end result, especially if you are working/sharing files with other disciplines.

If you are still having problems, you can ask for a dxf file instrad of a dwg iel. Thios file would be much larger, but seems to import better if there is a problem. I have had that with some files and could never find out why I couldn't import. VW 11.5 seems to have fixed those problems as I can import those same files, but maybe the dixf would help you in this case.

Do you mean that you would assign classes such as trees, shrubs, perennials, etc. to the plants and that they would show up in that order in your plant list? Do you use the simple plant list and add more choices to the database header and add that class?

I modified the simple plant list. Click on 'database headers' in the arrow pull down tab. Add an extra row above the first calculated rows (you can see these by the diamond infront of the row number). Type in 'Trees' or whatever your plant category is in this row. Then highlight the next row with the diamond shape, and right click on the row number, select 'edit criteria'. You will see row with 'record', 'plant record' is 'present' Click on more choices button and select 'field value' 'plant category' '=' 'trees' or whatever your category is. Now only the trees would be shown in the rows below. Add 2 rows below for the next category. Copy the database header info and change the category to the next category.
I had problems with this way when I added more categories (3&4 categories), so I don't know if this is a limit - that was my original question. Maybe Aqueous's way works better with classes.

One other thought. Our autocad operator says she had no problems when we exported from VW 10 versions. She didn't mind having anonymous blocks thta you can't modify. However, now if she inserts a drawing or file that has groups within groups in VW, autocad won't ask to replace or rename the groups or blocks within the main group or blocks. In this instance, we got the blocks exchanged with the earlier blocks (e.g. a paver replaced with a shrub, etc.).
Is there any way to have an option when exporting so that we can either name the groups or not name them depending on the circumstances? In a lot of instances, we don't want to xref every small file, especially when the client wants just one autocad file to contend with.

I started off with the simple plant list (columns for code, quantity, botanical and common names, schedule, remarks). I then categorized the plants in the rows according to their designation in the plant resource data (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals-biennials, etc.). I would edit the criteria in the data base headers so that only the trees would show up in the first section of rows, shrubs in the next, etc. The plants in each section would come in alphabetical order within that section.
My plant list would have one row which I labelled 'TREES'. The next row would be the edited database header so that only the trees would show up. The next row would be labelled 'SHRUBS', then the database header for shrubs, etc. This has worked fine until I tried to add more sections for perennials and for annuals-biennials.

I am working on Mac OS 10.3.7 on a G4 with 400MHz and 704MB SDRAM.

I added a new category to my plant list for perennials and for annuals. The plant list shows every instance of these plants instead of adding them up and listing them once. Also, they are not sorted alphabetically. I highlighted the database header and selected the sum and sort buttons on top. I get a message that it cannot sort or sum beyond a certain column number. This message didn't come up again and the plants are not sorted or summed. What can I do?

I guess sometimes when you solve one problem, sometgin else pops up. I think the xrefing would be the easiest way to go around this problem.

Thanks. The funny thing is, I never came across this problem before VW 11. Our autocad operator says that the groups did not come across numbered.

From what I have gathered is that you should fix your scheduled size the first time you input the plant in that particular file. If you have used that plant a few times in the drawing and then want to change the scheduled size, you will have to change the size in the Object Info pallette for each plant occurrence. Click on the Data tab and scroll within the middle portion until you find the scheduled size. Once you haver changed it for each plant occurence, it will show up correctly on the plant list worksheet. This can be adjusted from file to file, but it has to be the same for all occurences in each file. If you have two sizes for the same plant in the same file, then use two different symbols for that plant and it will show up twice in the plant list. Hope this helps.

I don't understand the part about enabling styling on a plant group so that the group will look merged as if the circles are overlapping - all I get is the overlapping circles. What I have done inj some of my projects is what I described below:
What I do is use a 'very' small circle, dot, or cross as the plant symbol - much smaller than the spacing of your plants - fill in your area for that plant type using the place plant tool and with none in the polygon display (Object Info palette). Then I draw an polygon outline and use the plant line tool to suggest the plant bed. This works well for perennials or shrub beds on drawings with a small scale (1:500 for example). Make sure the symbol is as simple as possible. I hope this helps.

Now (in VW 11.0.1 & 11.5) when I export groups to autocad, autocad automatically names these groups (group-1, etc.). Now, if I export another drawing to autocad with groups and this drawing is inserted into the original autocad drawing, it would again name these groups starting with group-1. It would then replace the second group-1 with the original group-1 and so one. This gave some interesting results as you can imagine. Before, I never concerned myself with the number of groups in my drawings when converting to autocad - they didn't get numbered. Without ungrouping everything (sometimes I don't know what has been grouped), is there anything I can do to avoid this?

If anyone has figured out how to use the Virginia Polytech plug-in, let us know - it seems too PC oriented.

JHEarcht: Does this work on a Mac? I know that Adobe Illustrator will view dwg files on a Mac, but not dwf files.
workgroup referencing

I am trying to use the workgroup referencing of imported autocad files instead of copying them directly to my vectorworks file. The referenced files are all greyed. Can you change something so that you can see the referenced layers normally? Even if I don't want to adjust anything on these layers, you can't read any text, see the lines properly or align objects to them. I'm hoping that I am just missing something simple here.
