  1. better yet return to Autocad and save yourself some heartache
  2. Hey Dave, Try reducing the bit depth of the image. As I understand from another discussion in here, a bit depth of 2 is black and white and anything more is various shades of greys and then colours. But its some kind of exponential expansion in file size when you go from 2 bits to 4 bits. ie. 4 to the power of 8 or something like that. or is it 8 to the power of 4. In any case it is bigger. If you can live with straight black and white images. then pick the lowest bit depth available when you import the image. I have reduced a 33.5 MB drawing done by our inexperienced cad jockey here down to a 9 mb drawing just by reducing the bit depth and changing some honking huge colour 3 d tiff file to a grey scale image.
  3. I know it's not your call Katie But if I upgrade to VW9.whatever to fix problems in VW 8.5.2, do I get my money back??? Or are the huge wopping sums we (the great unwashed) pay for software given unflinchingly to fund the programmers efforts in the hope that one day they will get it right? May I here raise the cry "Culpability for Software Developers"
  4. Do symbols also work with the class attributes. That is if I have a symbol say of a condo unit and I decide after having drawn it that I want to change the texture of the exterior walls to horizontal siding.... Can I change the class texture of my 'exterior wall' class and expect the unit symbol walls to also change having selected the 'yes always' option. because if you can do that I am missing something because my symbols never change.
  5. It helps and it doesn't help Katie. Thanks for trying but it ass Titanium says, inconsistant. I don't recall ever having answered No always (or never) and yet I don't get the message anymore. I have answered yes always and I don't gget the message anymore (as you point out) however I also don't see the changes in attributes in the objects in the class I have changed. My question was of course... is there a way to force it. That is, can I change my mind and have it ask me the question again after I have already effectively turned it off by answering yes always. I assume it defaults to the state where it asks the question if I shut down and restart VW. But maybe I change my mind in he middle of a drawing. I don't want to turn everything off to get the defaults, because for one thing I gget the defaults (which are usually the wrong options) for absolutely everything including but not limited to: extension reverts to a useless option where you have to manualy stretch your object to the line that you want to stretch it too. (who thought that one up?); fillet reverts to an option where it fillets two lines but doesnn't trim or remove the line ends; line reverts to constrained line (I think) etc etc I am boring you. This is an answer to Titaniums otherh question, why do I get answers, I think you are too concise. People don't want you to shut up the way they do with me. The easiest way to shut me up is to answer my questionother wise i'll waffle on for days
  6. You've got it, TiT. Inconsistancy is the name of the game. however, since it is a computer program and has to follow rules (it does doesn't it?) then maybe someone at nna would figure out what the rules are. 'Something like... if you have the classes set at active only and the layers set at snap to other layers and you are in the class that you are changing the colours and line weights on then it asks you the question, however if you change to a perspective view and turn all the layers on but grey the inactive ones and you are drinking black coffee with just a tiny bit of sugar and your mothers ancestors came from the isle of wight with a germanic strain three generations removed then VW will ask you the question but will not actually do what you tell it to do. Theres something more here.
  7. VW is an intuitive bit of software, like Macs. The problem lies in the fact that y'all are just not intuitive enough Intuit, or screw it!!
  8. Something that has recently caught my attention but which has been there from the start now that I think about it, when you edit a classes attributes (line weight, colour, fill colour, textures etc.) you sometimes get a question box from VW asking do you want to assign these attributes to all the objects currently in this class and you click on yes always, yes, maybe, maybe not, no, absolutely not etc etc etc. but here's the kicker... sometimes it desn't ask you. My question is, how do you force the dialog box with the question to appear every time? I am trying to assign textures to existing classes, there are loads of unit plan symbols in my drawing so to go through each symbol and manually change each wall, sometimes missing one or two when I could do it all automatically at the click of a button (the way it should and wants to be) well... That would really make things a lot easier over here.
  9. If it was up to my boss, I would do the threed model in VW and generate a hidden line view. having plotted that I would give it to my boss who would take it away and waste two days carefully going over all the lines with his felt tip pen and then rendering HIS drawing with pencil crayons. I however have been using Renderworks and have only just started playing around with texture mapping which all sems to be there if not perfectly obvious when you first get into it. Renderworks of course being an add on that works directly within Vectorworks. This is all using VW *.%.@ or should I say VW8.5.2Some one else will have to speak to later versions.
  10. And this is a bit off topic but is it just laziness that prompted our noble programmers to come up with that delightfully un-informative and redundant message "Vectorworks has unexpectedly quit" as a catch all for every crash ever experienced by a Vectorworks user for any reason whatsoever? Just curious
  11. ANYONE?????? It is a genuine problem unit plans (for condos) thath I have drawn in order to generate a 3d model are done as symbols with 2d and 3d components Everytime I edit the symbols 3d components (or even if I just open the edit 3d mode but don't actually edit anything) the order of objects in the 2d component of the symbol are all reversed. Floor hatches that were running behind everything are now overlaid over everything. It is a major hassle going in and unreversing everything everytime I edit the 3d part of the symbol. And I do mean EVERYTIME. I need a solution
  12. ever noticed (and I only just did) how ehen you edit a symbol that has three d components (so that you have to edit both the 2d and the 3d bits of the symbol separatly which is a big waste of time) and then you go back to the 2d edit mode for the symbol, that all the objects have been reversed in terms of their arrangement in layers..... That is things that were hidden by other things are now visible and the other things are no w invisible. Who thought this one up. Probably those clever program development guys. Is there a fix to this?? It's really annoying
  13. They actually assign defaults based on a rotating alphanumeric system which cycles through the numbers in ascending order and the letters in descending order (z - a) except is the cyrllic alphabet and also excludes vowels and letters ending in y as pronounced with a cheesy russian accent. I know this because I developed a computer program which detected this particular pattern. Of course none of this helps anyone because it depends on the developers idea of what constitutes an "order" for VW commands. That is, Arc the first command to be assigned a default mode # 1 because it is alphabettically 1st (not that this is the order that it would receive its default (see above) but for the sake of discussion lets assume it is)or would line be first????? Since nothing else makes sense in Vectorworks this would be a reasonable assumption.
  14. Well I seem to have created a 3 d window but when I insert it into a wall it doesn't cut a hole. I know I am missing something here. Does the symbol have to have a special je ne c'est quoi? A special hole generator to make a hole in the wall? I tried inserting a plugin hole (what a great concept, makes me wonder whether VW creators were warner brothers animators who have branched out to make architects lives miserable). Anyway, I inserted the plugin hole and then copiedd the hole from the wall and into my 3d window symbol on a hunch, and it worked, once. but now I have copied it around a few places and it is no longer working, though it is still leaving the outline of the window on the outside of the wall. I'm lost folks, totally lost.
  15. Is there a source for plugin objects for those of us who don't hold a degree in computer programming? I have been trying to find a way to alter the standard plugins for VW beyond your basic Home Depot line of standard window shapes and sizes for Cutesy pie suburban bungalows. I have failed. And I still can't figure out how to create a 3d symbol. It's always hit or miss where it ends up in the wall. I'm at a loss and may have to give this whole three d shebang up and just design the thing on a drafting board. Anyone??
  16. Not that your posts necessarily have to have a bearing on anything whatsoever. Joe Newell, case in point.
  17. I waited and waited and finally re-registered. In the interim, I forgot what my question was.
