  1. Correct yet again katie, thank you
  2. We were using VW 9.5 on Windows 2000 Pro until recently and have downloaded the patch upgrades to 9.5.2 For some reason there are a few differences in the pull down menus from computer to computer. The most immediate one is that on my version there is a trim command on the tool menu and not on other computers. also one has a structural shapes pallette when mine does not. Any explaination??
  3. what would be great would be if you could replicate the AC extend command. ie Click on the line you wish to extend to. then click on every line you wish to extend to it, or better yet if you have a row of lines draw a fence line across them to extend them all!! Would saying please help???
  4. Katie, Now youve got it. say you had to give this line to a contractor to set out on a building site. the length of the curve would be no use to him. what i want to dimension is the radius and also to be able to locate a centre point for setting out. I assume mike needs the same!
  5. VERSION 9.5.2 WINDOWS 2000 I AM CURRENTLY DRAWING A CEILING PLAN. THERE IS A BULKHEAD WHICH I HAVE FORMED USING A SERIES OF CURVES AND LINES I HAVE JOINED ALL THESE INTO ONE LINE USING THE COMPOSE CURVE TOOL SO I CAN OFSET IT TO SHOW STEPS IN THE CEILING. THE PROBLEM COMES WHEN I WANT TO DIMENSION THE BULKHEAD. THE RADIUS DIMENSION TOOLS WONT SELECT THE CURVED SECTIONS AND IF I DECOMPOSE THE CURVE IT TURNS INTO A SERIES OF FACETTED LINES. I END UP HAVING TO DRAW A CURVE OVER THE TOP OF THE LINE USING THE 3 POINT SELECTION TOOL AND DIMENSIONING THIS THEN ERASING IT!! THIS ISNT VERY PRACTICAL , IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO??
  6. in addition to my previous post there are a few things i should add: 1. the layer link can be duplicated, mirrored erased etc. but needs to be unlocked before this is done. 2. the xref cannot to my knowledge be clipped which is a pain but this can be over come in a very basic way by grouping the layer link and blanking out any areas that you dont want to show in the group. 3. you will find while using this feature that you need to use more layers rather than classes. If i think of any other pros and cons i will post them. let me know how you get on or if you have anyfurther problems.
  7. As a previous AutoCAD User and recent VW convert I posted the same query in june about linking drawings like you can with xrefs in autoCAD. Very helpfully a guy called Giovanni expalined how to use workgroup references which are effectively the same as xrefs. i will now attempt to do the same for you: 1. Set up two drawing files called plan 1 and plan 2 2. in plan 1 set up a layer called house and a class called walls and draw a rectangle using that layer and class. save drawing. 3. open plan 2. under the organise drop down menu click workgroup references. click new and browse and select plan 1. 4. select the layer that you want in dialogue box that appears ie. house 5. click ok and done. 6. if you now go to your layers area in plan 2 you will see a layer in itallics called house. this is the "xrefed" plan. it is best at this point i find to make this layer invisible to stop you changing it in the current plan. 7. while still in plan 2.create a new layer called xref set the scale and make active. go to the view pull down menu and select create layer link. 8. when the dialogue box appears select the house layer and make sure to click the project 2d objects box. 9. you will now see the rectangle appear on the layer. save this drawing. 10. go back to plan 1 and make a change ie. draw something else on the house layer and save. go to plan 2 and open workgroup referencing again and click update from all. 11. you should see the change reflected on this plan. there you go .i made this sound far more complicated than it actually is. it is simple once you start using it. good luck BAZ
  8. I think the real debate is not the VW10 v AutoCAD but why Allen could not make the transition to VW?? having used Acad for 8 Years i recently switched company and to VW at the same time. I picked it up in two weeks and i wouldnt say im anything special?? I dont think VW is the problem Allen.... (Never kick a good man until he is down)
  9. yet another problem....is it me??? anyway, i have created a window to insert into a wall. (this is on on 2d plan) i have a perpendicular guide line intersecting the wall at the point where i want to insert the window. when i bring the symbol near the wall is shows itself in a dashed line in the wall but when i bring it near the point of insertion it flips through 90?. I end up inserting it somewhere near the desired insertion point and dragging it to where i want it. This sometimes creates more problems. ie the symbol jumping to the wrong side of the wall or not breaking the wall. any ideas
  10. An example:I have say a square and a circle intersecting. And I want to draw a polyline around the total perimeter I have a problem. No problem doing the straight edges but I am unable to continue the polyline around the curved side. When I use the cubic vertex mode it doesn’t follow the line of the curve. And sometimes when I am using the corner vertex mode it draws a curve when I want a straight line, for no apparent reason. I know I could draw shapes and use the “add surface command” to achieve the same result, but this is impractical in some situations. Please help as it is driving me insane!!
  11. is it possible to change the thickness of a cavity in a wall type and then update walls already drawn?? i am using VW 9.5.2 (BTW if this is a feature of vectorworks architect is is possible to upgrade to this from VW9.5.2 cheaply??)
  12. Example:i have created a class with solid fill colour and not clicked the use at creation button. i have drawn a number of walls on this class.subsequently i edit the class, changing the solid fill colour and click the use at creation button, invariably this crashes VW V9.5? Any ideas?????
  13. Wierd one this,When i draw a curved wall using the 2 point and radius command no problem.but when i join / fillet this to a straight wall the inner line of the curve continues to form the entire circle ?? also this sometimes happens when i insert a door symbol to a curved wall. is this a glitch or just meany ideas??
  14. a wierd problem with curved walls. When drawing a curved wall with 2 points and radius no problem.when i join it with a straight wall using the wall join/fillet command, the wall joins alright but the inner line of the wall completes into a circle which cannot be deleted without deleting the wall?? is this a glitch or is it just me?
  15. Question: Sometimes i dont want to bring in an entire drawing to another drawing just a portion of it. Is it possible to clip a workgroup reference, like you cn clip an xref in Auto CAD?? apologies for continually referring back to CAD but this genuinely was a good function)
  16. Giovanni You are a genius!!!! its a piece of cake! Thank you, please keep an eye out for further cries for help
  17. A a new user of two weeks and former AutoCAD snob i am still coming to terms with learning Vectorworks 9, So a little help would be appreciated. I am only using this as a 2D drafting tool at Present ( babysteps and all that)Could someone let me know the following: Is there a method of linking seperate drawings files like Xrefs in AutoCAD?? i realise you can link layers but this is not much help for numerous users on the one drawing?????? This will probably be the first of many such emails as my company are too mean to pay for training!!!!! Thanks ( in anticipation) BAZ
