  1. Hi all,

Has anyone ever created a wall style representing a glass block wall that will show up properly in plan and 3-D? And if so, how would you recommend I create it and add it to the library?

I would like to use 8" or 12" square units.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  2. While I've been using VWA for many years, I've hardly used the 3D aspect of the application due to some clunkiness in the implementation. So, for the past 3 years, I've used SketchUp to do my modeling, sketch work and visualization as it has proven so fluid and intuitive, as well as infinitely flexible to achieve the desired results for my clients to understand the design concepts.

Of late, though, with VWA 12 and its many improvements and working alone for the past year, I thought to use its 3D aspects for a number of smaller projects to see how I might be better able to leverage VWA's features to speed up my putting together design and contract documents, including the BIM aspects.

I have found that the roof and stair tools, for example, are greatly improved and facilitate a more fully developed model with many options for rendering, but more importantly, facilitating a finalized design to go more readily to working drawings.

That said, I still use SketchUp extensively early in the design process for conceptualization, early schematic and continuously through development of the contract documents for testing out detailing issues and design opportunities that may arise along the way, and even during construction.

As with any profession, and ours in particular, the more tools in our box, the better we can deliver on the vision.

  3. Mike, cbaarch and Katie,

Thank you all for the nudges. I did try my ViewPack but it would give me a new viewport on a new sheet, but oddly in plan view that when edited to the hidden line perspective view, it would not be preserved when I go back to that newly created sheet.

However, Katie's simple exercise produced exactly what I wanted, and I feel foolish to have asked the dumb question when the answer was so simple.

Thanks otherwise for the cropping suggestion as well as it also allows me to leave out unwanted information in the periphery.

I can finish my sketch presentation and still meet my noon deadline now!

  4. Hi all,

I couldn't find this specific topic here or in VWA Help, and I was hoping someone might nudge me in the right direction.

I've created some saved views of a set of perspectives and would like to use them on a sheet with annotations. Can you create a viewport with those saved views?

Or do I have to create a viewport of the plan, project the view (perspective) from within?

    Thanks!

  5. Hi all,

I have come upon a couple of situations where I'd like to issue a sketch drawing that crops an elevation (etc.) to ADD additional information for just that one drawing. I want to preserve the existing annotations on that viewport.

I have a new Sheet that I call SK-xx for that issuance and will crop the view, but I can't figure how to preserve the existing annotations and then add new ones.

Can you please suggest a method to do this?

    Thanks!

  6. I have to say that after putting this version through its paces in a work environment using both PowerPC Macs and one Intel Mac, I have been very impressed at the swiftness, stability and subtle improvements to the application. I am quite pleased overall.

Even after reading the 12.5 Update PDF, I am still discovering and rediscovering tools and their refined functions. Given the implementation of not only updated or improved features/tools as well as making this a Universal Binary, I think NNA should be applauded for their efforts to deliver a nearly bug-free and FREE upgrade.

  7. I looked (not hard) for a topic that discussed the best way folks have found to prepare a VWA file (floor plan) to be exported as a .dwg file for them to use as a background for their mechanical, electrical, etc. work.

I'd love to hear what level of preparation you all are doing to prepare the files for their ease of use. I've gotten a myriad of comments about using National CAD Standards, to issues about 3D components (doors and windows in walls) coming in oddly (little squares at each end of each object), not being able to edit or delete items to clean up the background without it impacting items they need to keep.

Should I be more judicious in my use of layers, and classes especially to make it easier for them?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  8. HI and thanks. Just caught this, downloaded the new updater and tried to run it. I enter any one of my 3 licenses and I get the message "This is not a valid application serial number".

Am I doing something wrong or is there an issue with the updater. Fortunately, I haven't noticed any problems with my original updated 12.01 from February 17.

Any help is appreciated to bring me current.

  9. Hi all.

I hope someone can help me on this. I have various view ports for a site plan used over different sheets. I have all the classes for these viewports turned on from the main class setting area. When the viewport is visible, I also make sure that in the Object Info box I have the same classes visible.

However, after flipping back and forth between sheets and making a few changes, I tend to "lose" the viewport with the site plans. I have to go back and turn on those same classes again to regain visibility.

Am I missing a setting or doing something wrong, or could this be a bug?

    Thanks in advance!

  10. Thanks. I attempted that shortly after and was rewarding with great success.

However, I'm still trying to recall how one writes a vectorscript plug-in for future shortcuts.

In the meantime, I want to acknowledge fellow Vectorworks user Hugo Mujica Covarrubias for exchanging plug-ins with me. I can now toggle zoom line thickness.

What a great support group you all are! Thanks again.

  11. Yes, I knew about those. Thanks. I guess I wasn't clear as I am transitioning from VWA 11 to 12. I need the plug-ins or VectorScript shortcuts to add to the menu or keyboard shortcuts for Vectorworks 12.

I appreciate the quick response and hope that someone can still help, or that Vectorbits or VectoreDepot will update their offerings for VW12.

  12. In VWA 11, I was able to create a VectorScript keyboard shortcut to reverse the background screen from black to white and vice versa. For the life of me, I can't recall how I did it. All I know is that it created a plug-in. I tried copying that plug-in into VWA 12, and it works!

However, I now want to create another shortcut that allows me to toggle "zoom line thickness" on and off. I didn't see this covered in the Help menu, but maybe I'm missing something.

Any step-by-step help is appreciated. Thanks!

  13. I too, have been using the HP 455CA with OS X and VWA 11.5.1. You are right. On average, the plots take about 10 minutes. I havve not found a way to speed it up at all.

This may seem obvious, but the reasons I have figured that it takes so long is that a) your computer is doing the processing since the 455CA is not a Postscript printer, and b) there is not much of a memory buffer built into the plotter.

I am currently comtemplating upgrading to the HP 800PS. It is a Postscript plotter with a good amount of RAM and storage and built-in Ethernet/Jetdirect internal printer server. You may want to look at it given that the average B/W-grayscale output for a 24x36 sheet is about 1.5 minutes.

  14. I noticed that the Issue Manager has some very valuable information that is logged with each issue of drawings. However, (and I may have missed this), is there a way to log the total number of plots from a set that is printed at any given time so that we can use it to track reimbursables?

    Thanks in advance!

    [Confused]

  15. I've just scanned some forms required to be on our cover sheets for accessbility check-off. I scanned them into Photoshop (7.0), saved them as TIFF files, attempted to import into VWA 11.5 as image file (using a Mac, OS X 10.3.8).

    Nothing shows up.

I was able to import the JPEG version of the same files, although the output quality is poorer.

Is this a bug in VWA, or am I doing something wrong. I've done it this way before without any problems. Is there a workaround? I even tried cutting and pasting from PhotoShop into VWA, but that didn't work either.

Thanks in advance for the nudges and hints in the right direction. [Confused]

  16. I have been using since the upgrade and have not run into any problems whatsoever.

I'm better at updating my software than I am my profile (10.3.7 is what I am currently running).
