  1. Was wondering if there's a way for the units of elevation benchmark without changing 1. the document units 2.making it custom (which entails editing every benchmark) i.e. i have my doc in imperial but i want my "smart" elevational benchmarks to be in decimal format
  2. would be great if we could save multiple call out preferences or have an option where the callout on the left are one way and the callout on the right are different in terms of style. (i.e. position, alignment, etc). Long story short, i want the callout tool to work more like AutoCAD's MLeader
  3. thought it'd be nice to toggle through overlapping objects so that you can select just exactly what you wants. the work around is to bring stuff front or back but why have 5 steps when you can have 1?
  4. Hi, i was wondering if there's a tutorial for creating custom handrail style that links parametrically to stairs. If it can't be done, i was wondering if there's a workaround to this. (The only way i could see this working is to extrude alone a path with a circular profile) As of current, there are two kinds of handrail styles for stairs - Commercial and residential for imperial/metric. However, I'm not planning to use either and would like to create one style that terminates into the wall.
  5. I would like to see an option where you can select the sheets you want from the sheet layers in the navigation palette -> right click -> print or publish. Also, a print window option would be nice.
  6. @Andy Broomell, that's exactly what i'm looking for. thanks!
  7. yea, i turned them off in the OIP but the thing is that these are referenced viewports and have their own referenced classes that i can't adjust in the OIP. I can adjust the reference viewports but these changes are global.
  8. @nrkuhlthe thing about this is I can't, one the one hand, i need these dimensions to show on the floor plans. if i turned them off, the floor plan won't have dimension but if i turn them on, these dimension will show on the elevations. Perhaps i need to turn them off and add them in the actual model.
  9. @bcd or any one else. I'm continuing on in this process but I still a question: I have my model as a referenced viewport in place 1. I'm making a viewport for my elevation but stuff like dimension shows on my viewport even though planar objects are turned off. Now, i can't necessarily turn off the dimension for my referenced viewport because I need these dimensions on my plan. However, turning off the dimension for this particular viewport doesn't do anything because i'm not modifying the visibility of the referenced viewport is there a work around to getting ride of the red lines (dimension) as it shows here in the elevation?
  10. @MarissaF, it worked! you're a real life saver thanks
  11. I successfully imported the viewports that has the floor plans. However, now i'm running into the problem with cutting sections and showing elevations. Though these imported floor plan viewports display the 3d geometry in the design layer. Making a viewport of the referenced viewports does not display the 3-d geometry in the sheet layers. edit: restarting VW might have solved the problem. I have no idea why VW was doing what it was doing before..
  12. thanks bcd, exactly what i need. I assume that the viewport on the third file will update as I change 111 and 112?
  13. note: this is my first project that's dealing with dual properties on two lots. needless to say, being a relative new VW user too, i find everything just a little bit daunting.
  14. short story - i'm working on two houses on two different lots... lets call them 111 fake st and 112 fake street . i have to create 3 sets of drawing... 1. 111 fake street set 2. 112 fake street set 3. 111+112 fake street set What i've been doing for the combined set (111+112) is to import the layers from 111 and 112. However, whenever my manager tells me to change one thing, i find myself doing the same task multiple of times since the property appears on at least two sets of drawings. (or i end up deleting layers and reimporting them again as new layers... then i have to tweak my viewport visibility settings and what not).... needless to say, it becomes VERY VERY VERY time consuming and cumbersome... Is there a xref method to this where you can reference another VW file? Or perhaps you have a better method of going about this in an efficient manner, i'd love to hear it. I've tried to describe the problem as best i could but if there's anything that's unclear, let me know. Thanks!
  15. I'm trying to create an animation on MAC. however, when i save it onto my desktop, i can't open it in quicktime and the file size of said file is 0 bytes. I've tried several configurations but i still get the same problem.
  16. Back story: currently designing two houses on adj. lots. I started with a blank vw file and modeled one house that sits on a site model. I then saved the file as new and started working on a new file for the new building using the same site model in the same location. For both files, i deleted the adj. house so as to provide clarity to other people who might work on the file. However, I now want to show both building in one file again. Dilemma: I'm trying to import some layers but the imported layers are on different corners of the screen and they aren't overlaying (when they should be).
  17. Brilliant! This discussion has definitely expanded my knowledge of Vectorworks and will definitely speed up my production quite a bit. Thanks all for contributing to the growth of this budding vectorworks user! As for my actual problem, I"m working in residential single family dwellings so the max # of exit paths will probably not exceed 4. What @bcd described and the file attached best fits my problem. Thanks to all who chimed in.... Now, on to learning about scripting and marionettes!
  18. This is probably not going to worth much but it's as effective as the end user's knowledge of the program. With that said, I feel that Vectorworks is the best software in terms of the amalgamation of 2-d documentation and BIM. Whether this is a good thing or bad thing, you'll have to really dig deep into the actual practice of your firm and how you intend to use the software on a day to day basis (or project by project basis). However, in my opinion, Vectorworks still is somewhat lacking in terms of BIM but for the things that it does do, it's pretty darn good. Others might disagree but to me, Vectorworks is a jack of all trades but a master of none.
  19. Yikes, marionettes sounds super daunting. i'll pass for now. I tried Eric's method and it works fine (see attached). The thing that i dislike is that vectorworks places the total length on the top and all the subsequent lengths of lines at the bottom. If there was more control with editing these fields, this method would be perfect (perhaps i'm missing something from Eric's post).... Furthermore, i can't input anything on the left or right of the column. As much as I would like to put "total length" next to 1 1-7/8", it seems that I can't. I suppose i just have to think about this a bit more or if you guys have any input, that'd be appreciate as well. Thanks for your help
  20. i guess my confusion lies in the fact that I not only want the TOTAL LENGTH of the entire polygon but also the INDIVIDUAL LENGTHS automatically displayed. The only thing that comes close to this is the "generate report" command but i'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone direct me to a tutorial or explain to me how to do this?
  21. thanks y'all. now i'm struggling to know how exactly to create a database. i'm a relatively new user so much of this is new to me.
  22. also, no copyright infringement intended by the upload of above plan. i merely wanted to illustrate something and pulled it off of Google images.
  23. I was doing exit path diagram and i was just wondering if you could have vectorworks input all the lengths of the lines into a worksheet via a function. see below - for example, instead of dimensioning all the green segments to see the lengths and adding them up after dimensioning all the segments. is there a function in vectorworks that i can just put down that will automatically list out all the length automatically? Of course, i know how you could automatically add all the segments already via function on worksheets but to input each dimension of the line segments is a pain for a big building with multiple units. thanks
  24. Here's the original picture (reattached it). I couldn't arrive at an alternate solution and the solution ended up to be making all roof faces. The top is the intended result and the bottom is when I was still using AEC->create roof. however, that doesn't work and have resorted to making all roof faces.
