  1. 11.5.1 - The Callout Tool defaults with a patterned background, on a class with "Use at Creation" checked and the "None" background preselected....what's the deal?

11.5.1 update went Ok, as detailed....took about 10 minutes.

  2. Mark, I do not have the thicker line issue on screen (and I don't use zoom line thickness...), and plotting to an HP800PS works Ok, and diagonal lines are the appropriate thickness.

Katie, maybe I'm not up to speed on how the OSX drivers work......is there a way to use a non-PS driver on the Mac, so that .pdfs print/plot Ok? .pdf is preferred for small scale sketches, but I won't use it with the diagonal line problem.

  3. We have an opportunity tp purchase an HP750C (5-6 years old).....

Any feedback on the quality of the HP750C? compatible with Mac OS X? stable drivers? etc.

Word is, from the HP Tech guy who repairs our HP800, that the older 750s are a better plotter.....

    Thanks is advance.....

  4. For us, this is a new and expanded issue with 10.5.1, and was not evident in .b. Not sure how this is an Apple issue, if 10.5 and .b did not exhibit this behavior, at least to the extent of 10.5.1.

A work-around is to minimize the windows not in use, and then VW knows the "active" file.

We have learned to tile the windows of desired active files, so that when selecting a file, the edge of a window is always selectable.

    os 10.2.8

  5. According to PR's post above, the font problem exists on Windows platforms as well. If so, then NNA's explanation that this is related to the Mac OS is clearly inaccurate, and that's disappointing. The problem may be related to OS X, in the same fashion it appears related to Windows, but it's VW's interface, not the os. This problem ONLY occurs with VWA10.x (on 10.1.x & 10.2.1, .2, .3, .4, .5 & .6), and we plot fine with the same fonts from other programs.

In another attempt to clarify previous postings, by repeating what is obvious to anyone with mac, plotter, and a font other than Geneva (NNA - do you have this set-up in house?), non-system fonts in worksheets are substituted with a system font when plotting, so the screen layout and sheet design is not what one receives from the plotter. Due to differences in font structure, particlualry kerning, the worksheet will run out of bounds, over adjacent work. This problem is only slightly improved over the original font jumbling problem, where the fonts were substituted AND text overlayed on itself, and stayed within the bounds of the worksheet.

Anyone "upgrading" to VW10 should be prepared to plot from classic on the mac if they expect the drawing to appear as it does on screen.

  6. Katie,

Worksheets/Fonts - Yes, NNA has explained the problem, of which we are fully aware, Ok..., but, we still can't plot from 10.2.6 in VWA10.x, yet we are able to plot from other programs with the same font that causes the trouble in VWA. So, the NNA explanation lacks some oomph. We will continue to plot from classic.

While engineers continue to address the speed issue, we are becoming intimately acquainted with the SPOD (spinning pizza of death).

Expoort to .dwg - Your explanation is a workaround (check this box, uncheck this here other box, and only export on Tuesdays....), while we need software that just works. NNA designed the export set-up, and it does not work effectively. It is NOT as fast as previous versions, or we would not be using classic to export.

The Set-up Assistant - This post, and some of my previous postings under other topics (Management Assistant), address this issue thoroughly. I dare anyone to use the SA to it's full extent and make money with a set of CDs. The SA may be a software engineer's dream, but it does not work for us.

  7. We continue to have the following problems in VWA10 on OS 10.2.x with a variety of different mac hardware configurations:

Worksheets/Fonts - We use a machine still running classic to plot, since unresolved font problems make worksheets plot screwy from 10.2.x. If all you need is Arial or Geneva, you may be Ok. Never seen a good answer why this problem only exists with VWA.....we mix a variety of CAD/graphic/3D work, and plot Ok from other programs. We have experienced no exceptions to this significant problem.

VW files above 1mg start to run slow, and around 1.5mg there is a noticeable delay between commands. This is sometimes resolved by restarting. This occurs on a g4/933 w/1.25 gb ram, and, obviously, slower machines.

Exporting to .dwg from OS10.2.x takes so long it is not possible - I have had to force-quit at 30 minutes; so, we export from classic. Apparently, according to NNA, just one PIO will increase the export time, but I've experienced this on files with only 2D elements. We have experienced no exceptions to this significant problem.

The Set-up Assitant (and related Task Manager) is an annoying "improvement", because part of the cost to upgrade covers the obvious extensive development time for what is a virtually useless script. If you unleash the Set-up Assistant, even to 10% of it's capabilities, you'll have an unmanageable file chock-full of classes/layers, that requires another intensive management tool (Task Manager) to sort through. The Set-up Assistant will have you issuing 10 drawings when 3-4 would suffice.......all this script work, while the TB is full of requests for better workgroup referencing, and has been common to other programs for the last 6 years+.

We have some other issues, but they are more related to the same kind of specific issues and work-arounds that would exist in any release.

We have noticed a decrease in Tech Board activity, except for new users, which highlights that 10.x is not so improved over 9.x, except for stability. In that regard, VWA10 is what --9.x should have been.......

  8. Henry,

AC allows one to isolate an individual snap control point via the tab button. VW requires that some combination of keys, depending on the default preference, be selected in order to achieve the same thing. For example, if you have snap points selected, toggled by A, D, Q, W & E, and you only need D, you must select A, Q, W & E. AC allows the user to hit the Tab button to scoll thru the list of available snap points, which is easier than "typing".

This item, and it's cousin the selection tool, is a 2D drafting item at which other programs offer a few keystrokes less work, resulting in quicker 2D prodution.

This item belongs in the Wish List.

  9. When trimming a wall section with batt insulation (drawn using the batt tool), the batt won't trim, and some message "the only objects that can be trimmed are......" pops up.

    What's the deal?

The trim tool has taken a toboggan ride since 8.5....

  10. Charles, please consider the possibilities of a more dynamic and flexible door schedule, expanding on what was available in 8.5.....

For example, doors or openings should be able to be scheduled with and without doors, and/or with new or existing frames. The door schedule should accomodate door types, hardware types, frame types, accessories (e.g., lites), with all the relevant info, including notes, at the minimum. Please review a good set of architectural construction documents to understand the full complexity of the door schedule.

Please consider renovation projects, where doors may be replaced, but the existing frame is scheduled to remain (we have scheduled the reverse of that, also).

For many architects, a cased opening means a hollow metal frame or wood frame (not just an opening in a wall), and the type of frame is listed in the door schedule, referencing a frame schedule or series of elevations indicating the frame type. in this instance, the door item is shown as " - ", indicating to the contractor that a door slab is NOT part of that opening; coupled with no swing on the floor plan, the contractor gets the picture....

Not sure what you mean by "since you don't buy cased openings, you just install them." ....??? If you've got a free source for cased openings, please share.....

  11. This could be solved by having as default 2 Saved Sheets - ALL ON & ALL OFF (all classes/layers on or off) - with settings that update accordingly anytime a class or layer is added/changed/deleted.

  12. When adjusting the leader line of a callout (moving the arrow head to a new point), the whole callout freaks out - text & shoulder move proportionally to the length that the leader was moved, the shoulder becomes longer and drops from center of the 1st text line to the bottom of the 1st text line. The callout is then uneditable in the OIP; i.e., the shoulder can not be set to 1/8" and the ...???

  13. Why the difference between OS 9 & 10?

What if we don't need the object itself to be converted to an object that .dwg can read? and we only need the lines of the object to show up?

Does the "Decompose 3D Objects" in the export dialog box allow pios not to be exported as objects?

  14. Mbuck, class "scope" is somewhat defined via sheets and views of a drawing can be saved per class per layer. The "matrix" of classes and layers works okay within the Save Sheet dialog box, but does require additional management (non-drawing) effort, particulary when layers are used excessively - like when the the Set Up Assistant runs amok.

Layers work intuitively for designers familiar with graphic programs, like Photoshop, until too many layers causes a "matrix" of confusion.

  15. Ok, then that selected object should retain the charachter of a selected object, with the highlights indicated. But, the difficulty with that, is now you are on a different layer, with a different scale, and can not edit or deslect the object.....

Once in the different layer, new objects can be made/edited, but the program still remembers that previosly selected object, and considers that object during the fit to objects function.

This is not necessarily a Fit to Objects bug, but fit to objects is when it is most noticeable.....I sense we are not communicating...

  16. Yes, Fit to Objects will take you to the extents of any/all objects selected....

When layers are switched, the selected object now appears to be de-selected; i.e., it is no longer highlighted with it's selection points. Who's to know the program still thinks it is selected? Now you're moving around the other layer (not have selected any new object), and hitting "x" as many times as you like - the previous object is still selected.

Solution - When switching layers of different scales, objects selected should be deselected by default.

  17. If you have 2 or more layers at different scales, select an object on 1 layer (on a drawing with a variey of info - not just that 1 object). With that object selected, switch layers, and the object's selection points disappear - ok so far...... Now, move around the drawing to work in another area, and then hit the Fit to Objects button. Instead of showing the extent of all objects, it returns to the object selected on the original layer. ??

  18. VW10.1 and 10.01 on 10.2.4 is slow on g4/400/512 powerbooks and g4/833/1g occuring in files greater than 1.5mb, with slowdowns starting around 1mb.

Same cursor problems reported above, and forget about selecting lots of info and moving.....

    now what?

  19. jan15, viewports are slightly more complicated than drawing with rectangles, and they benefit the 2D production process.

p retendo, we consistently draw complicated renovation projects that benefit from having enlarged demo, floor and reflected ceiling plans on the same drawing. This is possible in VW, but only by drawing some elements twice and managing layers more than we would prefer. (If we're managing layers, we are not drawing.) As much as we don't want AC, viewports allow sophisticated drawing management of scales, sheets and layers. VW WGR and layer links need improvement.

  20. Mbuck, I agree with your list in its entirety, and I would add that WGR/layer links should be improved. It is not currently possible to show multiple differing views of the same object on the same sheet without drawing some elements twice.

This TB is full of requests for improved 2d basic drafting tools, which may or may not have a background in AC; check out Carl Burns from last year. These requests do not get the attention they deserve, since 3D is the "hot" thing. The trim/extend tool has actually gotten worse since 8.5.

Folks who consistently react negatively to the suggestion that AC may be superior in some respects probably could not utilize that program to its full extent, notwithstanding its unneccesary complications. It is obvious that it takes fewer or equal steps to draw a line or wall in AC than VW, and the "L" coordinate entry system is 1 reason why. Also, Viewports, coupled with layer management, are a fantastic programming invention, and dramatically increase 2d productivity, for competent technicians.

Suggestions like using the numeric keypad to press the enter key require the right-handed mouser to make unecessary motions, and are not effective drafting techniques.

Instead of comparing wishlist items to AC and automatically dismssing those requests, it would benefit the Wish List TB to suggest comparable or competing wish list items....

  21. Provide the ability to define elements of wall types on different classes. How about a checkbox in the Wall Type dialog box that allows either a default single class or multiple class defined per element (fill, offset, line, etc.)? e.g., this would allow framing and brick to be drawn on different classes, with the relevant color drawn per class, adopted automatically if the "use at creation" box is selected in class styles.

Provide the ability to define custom line widths. The current line width selections are defined.
