  1. Hi folks, I'm new to Vision and slowly learning it. Please bear with me, I'm going to fire some probably daft questions up here but I do look for answers before hand. So I'm happily getting some lovely looks from the movers I've put into my Vision files but I've patched a few S4 profiles and some Arri 2ks. They're in the vectorworks file, I've addressed them in the same way as the movers yet although they appear in the Vision 3d image, they aren't in the patch window... What am I doing wrong? Cheers.
  2. Thats great. Thank you very much. My wife's off on tour over the weekend so I'm going to fill the office with my MQ100 desk and monitors and have a play.
  3. Cheers, I've deactivated the switch in Energy Saver and its running much better. It still struggles with 10 X4 bars pointing at the screen and the 4 Sharpys but hey, for the project I'm looking at trialing it on that shouldn't be an issue. As for the light output, turns out to be a case of operator error... I know how bright the X4s are compared to Sharpys and they just didn't seem to be right... until I remembered to zoom them in... Thanks again.
  4. Hi Hive mind, I've just put the 2 universe free version of Vision on my MBP and looking in the activity monitor it doesn't seem to access the high performance GPU, it just seems to run off the standard intel one. Vectorworks does access it however. I ran a test of 10 GLP X4 bars and 4 Sharpy's and it's been really struggling. Is there a way to force it to use the 4GB Radeon 560? Oh and while I'm here, is there a way to increase the overall light output of all fixtures from one menu? Cheers, Matt.
  5. Its been a while since I last used VW so please forgive me as I'm a bit rusty but I've been stuck with creating a semi circle of Martin Sceptrons and some sunstrips in the vertical plane. I can't even seem to rotate any of the Sceptron or sunstrips symbols that come with VW.... just not up to my usual standard or maybe I am! So I can't rotate a hybrid object. What do I do? It seems pretty random as to whether the rota objects in the OIP do anything. I'd like to be able to create an array of Sceptrons loosely based on a semi circle and this just seems the way to do it.... I also want to place some sunstrips that aren't vertical. Where am I going wrong? I just can't get past this. I'm sure that once its made clear there'll be an "oh, yes. I knew that" moment.... I've tried to edit the 3D component to make a symbol that at least sits in the vertical plane rather than horizontal but I'm just failing at every hurdle and although I should really stop for the night and go to bed its really bugging me now... Cheers in advance.
  6. So after a good clean up of the file things seem to be better. If I try to do a hidden line render of the stage plot it still takes far to much time (i never even bothered letting it get to the end it was that slow) but this plot will do. I'll load up the file to dropbox but its 180 mb so will take a while on my connection. Also, what are the lines coming out of the labels and how do I get rid of them? Cheers Stage Plot.pdf
  7. Cheers, will look into getting it sent when next at the machine, I think checking the Display Planar Objects boxed has solved the issue - sort of... However, its just created another problem, I have as suggested created a layer that only holds the truss and fixtures I want to show and have created a viewport on a new sheet of the front view of the stage. On it are maybe two dozen moving heads, some Sunstrips, a bit of truss and two mirrorballs. Again when I click Update in the OIP with display planar objects ticked I just get the whirling ball for what so far is about an hour.... It would be quicker to create some text boxes on that plane that represent the fixture number and patch data than wait for it to finish rendering. Would there be somthing that is making the process really slow?
  8. Cheers, Yep, didn't have Display Planar Objects ticked, that has sorted it out in the single head only file i made so all good but in the file i'm working on, after setting to display Planar and clicking on Update, the process was taking huge amount of time. I'm working on a MBP i7 with 16gb and a 2gb graphics so should be okay but after about an hour it had gotten nowhere. I'll look into "Create Plot and Model View", its something I know nothing about.... Cheers.
  9. Yep, 3d labels, I've set them to the right orientation but still no joy. I've created a new document with nothing but one moving head in it, labelled it and created two viewports from the front, one just by drawing a box around it and including the label in the area and a second by creating a section viewport that is the wider than the area needed to contain the 3d label. The label is certainly there as it shows up in the standard viewport and when I rotate around the head in custom view I see it clearly however it's still not showing up in the section viewport. I could create classes for all the stuff in front of the stage (trusses, fixtures, video panels, venue architecture etc) and disable them for this particular viewport which shows the patch details of various vertically stacked fixtures on drop bars on the upstage truss but that just seems like a faff and I like to keep things as simple as possible. A section viewport seems the simplest way to create an uncluttered view but i just can't get it to display the labels.... As usual with my VW troubles, its usually a very simple thing I'm missing, I just cant find it this time...
  10. Hi all, I'm struggling to get a fixture label to display in a section viewport. I have all the right classes selected but still no go. If i create a standard viewport in front view then I get the label, I need to create a viewport from the stage frontline inwards so as to not clutter the view with dance floor trusses and section seems the simplest. Would i be better just putting everything on the dance floor on a separate layer and turn that off for the viewport? Cheers folks
  11. I'm having exactly the same issue (see my post in entertainment and visualisation section - mods if you can move to this section that'd be ace, sorry). I find the only way is to as mentioned, either save and re open the file or shutdown and re open VW. It seems pretty random as to when it happens and what is/isn't visible. Its a bit of a pain but it is usually possible to see if its working properly and stop the render and shut down.
  12. Hi all I'm starting to make renders of lighting stage set ups I'm quoting on and I'm having a few issues, well, one really. On quite a regular basis, my renders don't turn out as they should, items are missing, often whole classes and layers, sometimes all layers. They are there as when I move the mouse over them I can see the outline of them is highlighted but sometimes its only the lit fog that renders or a completely white )or black) image. In order to solve this, I have to save the file, shut it down and re open it. After doing this it will usually render fine but this is time consuming. Note, I am not changing any of the visibilities at any point.... Does this sound like theres something wrong with my system? I have only one machine so have other programs (chrome, mac pages/numbers open at the same time) so could this be affecting it?
  13. Ah! Sorted, just needed to be set to receive shadows... of course, the blades will create shadows.... Getting there, stumbling forward, picking myself up at each hurdle.... :-)
  14. Hiya, cheers for that, I'm back at my desk after a little holiday, I realised that actually, it was a combination of (like you said) using a to lower powered unit and the reflectivity of the surface I'm up lighting not being what I was looking for so having a play with that. Cheers. Next issue is that I don't seem to be able to render a profile beam through fog with the shutters in to create a slot of light. I get the slot on an object in the beam path but the lit fog is just a big circle as if the shutters aren't in. Do I need to put an image in as a gobo of the slot I'm after? Light is a S4 19. (should this be a new post/topic?)
  15. Cheers Rob, Got it sorted with a new texture, next thing is one of the units (Chauvet COLOrado) just isn't kicking enough light out as an uplighter on a back cloth. How would I edit the light element of it to get more out? Cheers.
  16. So... I think I'm getting there... Edit symbol, where the glass of the lens should be place a disk in its place with a texture created to glow when the light is on? Taking a bit of time to get the correct colour (very low power tungsten) as there seem to be so many things that affect it. Any help with that'd be ace, I quite like this challenge, nothing like an actual job to get you to learn stuff... much better than just playing around...
  17. Cheers, slowly getting there, realised I had "set colour by colour field" checked and not by "lighting instrument" so thats sorted now, I now have then pointing where they should although I'm not sure how. I did check rotate 2D to focus point but when looking at a Plan View it looked messy as all the bases are rotated at angles to the truss. I unchecked it and got on with some other things, when I went back to an Iso view, they were pointing towards the focus point. My next question is how would I create a low glow from the body of a Robe Patt 2013 fixture? Thanks again, Matt
  18. Hi all, I've just made the leap to owning and properly using VW having previously just used it on other machines owned by the companies I've been designing (basically) for. I'm now setting out on the steep, sometimes confusing but ultimately rewarding journey to getting to know this... so I might be on here a bit asking some rather dumb and obvious questions but I do have an understanding of most of the basics... So, first two: When I make a focus point and direct a moving head towards it, on my renders it doesn't point towards it, generics do however as does the light coming from it. Do I need to set its pan and tilt manually? Secondly, I've made a key of the lights in the drawing and it has automatically colour coded them however on my plans they are still just black... what am I doing wrong? Thanks for now....
