  1. Hi I have found that Open Gl rendering has changed in 2009. VW prefs set to Detail very high. OGL set to very high no check boxes. In previous versions- 1. set to active layer only and when rotating a light object the result was active, you could see what changes were be effected by moving the light. This allowed great detail to be created. Now no change until releasing tool. 2. when using the fly over, rotate, walkthrough, the rendering remained active and in color. now I get wire frame only. 3. I could get very nice highlight effects and great control. Now I can not control because I can not see what is taking place until letting it render. Now the screen can go black with a selected object showing in the orange wireframe. Fast Renderworks will show the rendered objects but it is not interactive. This behavior happens on my intel iMac and on the schools G5 Macs and server set up. The reason I don't like to use Renderworks is I don't know what changes are being made, it take hours to get the most basic lighting effect in renderworks. A file that looked great in OpenGL would be strange looking in Fast renerworks. Highlights gone, shape of objects changed to include folds. Or start and end surface effect. I did several lessons in a renderworders training CD and concluded that I don't neeed to spend the time to get any of those effects. I can tell what it will look like with open Gl and enjoy the process. Have settings been moved or added for OpenGl that I have not found? Many settings have been changed in this version. For me the quick and easy VW program is quickly disappearing. Thank you, Ivan CADD instructor for SCCC Wood Construction Center

    Open GL loss of functions

Hi- Update on Open GL behavior. The lab computers act different than mine. Can't do anything to change that beyond calling tech support, but then I don't know what to describe as the 'should be like this'. My iMac will render OpenGl and allow flyover and walktrhorugh to stay rendered. The light objects are not interactive. I found a new checkbox and update button on the object info pallet that has no effect weather checked on not. The light updates when released. layers are set to active only. OpenGl set to very high. VW Prefs set to detailed and always. I checked behavior with VW 12.5 and 2008 all with the same stationary of mine and with the programs new file. Old versions have active light and 2009 does not. Are there any new setting or prefs? I have found lots of new settings throughout this version for tools and commands. Thanks for your feedback Ivan
  3. Hi- Just to jump into this topic, My 19in CRT and 15in LCD both give differernt 'Real world sizes' as I drag the window from one to the other. Change the screen resolution for either and i can get very small to giant size rectangles from the same window. I think the last time that 100% was a real world setting was for a 13in CRT set to 600 by 480 or may be it was 800 by 600. But it really is best to think of all drawings as a scale drawing and 1:1 means that one inch on the printed drawing will be equal to one inch on your tape measure. As for real line thickness on your screen- it aint't going happen. The screen display is made up of little squares or pixels and each one can be set to a color. But to draw a line the screen will make it one pixel, or two pixels, or three pixels ...... This is what we see on the computer screen. The lines can have no finer resolution than the screens pixel size. What I have my CADD class students do is make a VW file with the layer at 1:1. draw twenty or so lines, and using the 'set thickness' choice from the attributes pallet, give each line a thickness that is a series of the possible choices. EX- using the mm setting for the line thickness give the lines a setting of 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, 0.21 .....after getting to 0.30 change to a larger jump. 0.40, 0.50, 0.60, 0.70.... after all the lines are set to the line weights, copy them and paste farther down the page, now rotate that set of lines. SAVE this print sample. When viewed on screen the lines will not show a change in thickness until it is large enough to go to the next pixel and the lines set at an angle will have a jagged stair step look to them. Print the page at a resoultion of 300 dpi from your printer and they look great. I have the students go one step further and use the text block to write the setting for eack line under that line. They have to get them lined up with the correct line using the align tools. Now they have a visual grib sheet of what different line weights look like on screen and what they will print as. From this sample page they choose what line weights they want to set the five choices in the attributes pallet to for the type of drawing look they perfer. I hope this helps Ivan
  4. I just looked at your answer to "How do I keep my object rendered when rotating the view" and yes setting the detail and alwalys sliders in Preferances affects the results,BUT, to keep the view rendered the Layers setting MUST be set to 'Active Only, or Gray Others' Then you can rotate your objects and view them as they move. This means that the drawing structure is confined by your need to rotate the objects. Or set up a linked layer. What has changed in the new version, and is not appreciated, is that the light symbols now do not show when you start to adjust them. I want the visual guide of the angle and direction to set up lights. I learned lighting from photography and set the stage as I would a product shot. Not having the light symbol show leaves lots of guess work and trial and error. Set layers to Active Only and roate away. Ivan theholistichome@cablespeed.com

    Stopping a rendering

I'm looking at the post for the question on how to stop a render and have tried the suggested command period, many times, It used to work. Now OS X Jaguar VW 10.1 are not working for the stop render. Question, How to stop a render in progress? Knowing that I want to adjust several things in the drawing, and wishing to look at the rendered drawing for reference, (not live update) how do I keep the drawing from starting to render after I adjust one thing when I have several other things I would like to adjust and then render. Or to condense, Can I specify when to re-render? A drawing that is rendered seems to automatically start to re-render, while a wire-frame waits to be instructed.
  6. I am trying to get the symbol libraires into V10.0.1 The resource browser offers a slide out menu to "Find resourses on Disk'. That path leads to a DB asking for I know not what, at the bottom is a button for 'Set Where" whatever that means and this will get you to a regular folder list where you can choose 'Object Libraiers' to find that all the contents are gray and not selectable. How do you choose a symbol to add to a new file. The Help menu starts all descriptions of what to do with a symbol already in the file. I will bet it is not difficult just hidden in some odd way. Thanks for the help Ivan theholistichome@cablespeed.com

    which mouse is best?

HI I have been using a Wacom Intuos 4 x 6 tablet. It has a 3 button mouse and the center button is a scroling wheel. Now is VW 10 the scroll wheel works and with the option button the page also move side to side. Works Great. I bet the Graphire tablet would work the same. The mouse is comfortable and has weight so it moves nice. The tablet is corded but the mouse is cordless. You get to set all kinds of features and preferences. You also get a cordless pen with either tablet. Check them out . Ivan
