  1. Thanks Juan and Jeff - Sorry, I immediately drove up to Lake Tahoe for five days. I unplugged my computer (I'm totally avoiding a Menu>Shut Down as my On button at the back of the computer basically doesn't work anymore and just the general feeling of fragility of this old machine) and just plugged it all back in and started it back up and first off the VW app almost started up and then crashed but 2nd time was the ticket. I exported the file back to VW2020 and will do that with a few of my current just in case I have more problems, but so far, so good. Cheers
  2. when right clicking a recent file down at the dock the dialogue box says "application not open anymore" although another choice through the popup from right click also shows a grey "application not responding"
  3. Updated to VW2021 SP4 two days ago, working fine and shut down last night and for the first time ever the application won't open - bounces in the dock (MAC 0S 10.13.6, 27" late 2013 IMac ) but never opens up. Anyone else having issues? Having important Zoom call with client to see updates on project in minutes!!!
  4. Got it! Thanks for the quick reply! Do you consider the Export Cinema 4D then the best default otherwise for Twinmotion?
  5. I have VW Designer 2021 v.3.1 and when I go to the File>Export it says :ExportdataSmith not in Plug-ins Folder. Any Ideas? Mac High Sierra 10.13.6 I'm extremely wary of updating the OS because of overall wonkiness/fragility of the computer behavior (late 2013 IMac) and legacy (old) programs - just hopefully riding this out for a couple (few?) more months until I can upgrade. I really don't have the graphics horsepower to run the program but I like to dabble in the software trying to learn it knowing I will be upgrading into a machine that can soon. Thanks
  6. Thanks so much for this informative post Jeff. It’s all new to me but I noted what looked like a CAD measuring app during the Apple presentation re. the lidar sensor. It looks like additional integration and development is warranted and needed for everything to begin to work seamlessly (or as much as technology and software can).
  7. I’ll preface this by acknowledging that I have only the most basic understanding of lidar and point cloud (never used it) but the technology intrigues me and I could definitely see some usefulness with it. Having said that, do those of you that know the technology better see 3rd Party apps for the iPhone being able to capture data that would be able to import into Vectorworks files, either as a simple measurement model or actually using 3D point cloud and render able images? I briefly just researched some info on the iPad Pro and its lidar sensor and available apps, it seems even if you can’t directly import into Vectorworks the data it can capture could be very useful in documenting existing conditions. I’m ready to update my iPhone 6 and considering the value of the extra features and cost of the iPhone 12 Pro. Thanks!
  8. Yeah I’ve been watching some of the reviews and it is pretty much unanimous to go with the standard 8GB and upgrade with a couple of much cheaper chips (but still quality) from another source. Good info on the graphics card too. It also looks like it is well worth it to go with the SSD over the standard Fusion Drive, whether you choose the 512 or 1 TB There is more than a little noise that this almost stealthy update of the existing shell and design of the IMac portends a more complete new design within the year but I don’t know if it is worth it to wait it out from just those rumors and noise. It doesn’t seem that Apple is investing that much in their desktops any longer.
  9. Hey Art V Thanks for all the useful information. I'm with ya that given my infrequent hardware upgrades I should probably go pretty much all in what I can afford.
  10. Finally, Apple updated its iMacs a couple of days ago! Looking to upgrade my 2013 machine with a top of the line 27". Any ideas/Recommendations as to rating the value of upgrading the following specs specifically for a Vectorworks 3D modeling/rendering workflow- what would give my the biggest bang for my buck? -Processor Chip to the 3.6GHz 8 Core vs the standard 3.7GHz 6 Core- -16 or 32GB RAM vs the standard 8GB- -Graphics Card from the IMac Pro vs standard 580x The full upgrade adds over a grand to the standard configuration. I tend to keep my machines about five years an don't mess with it after I buy it. I always forget which parts of the machine's guts process 3D Rendering and complex modeling files where that upgrade makes the biggest difference. Thanks!
  11. Hey Jim. It took a couple of restarts and app quitting but the functionality has returned. Thanks for the quick answer. Cheers.
  12. A brief flash of the Pan icon when Space Bar held down, then gone. Boomerang mode fails to temporarily switch tools. Space Bar inputs as text is totally stable with no issues. Just checking if this is at all a known glitch and/or quick fix known, or something with my system/hardware (keyboard)? The loss of the Space Bar Pan is driving me a little bit crazy- hobbling along with the center mouse button. Thanks
  13. Indeed! In Southern California so threats of mudslides, wildfires and earthquakes abound! I am leaving to a civil engineer the design and responsibility of a curving retaining wall giving us another 10' into the hillside behind the existing pad. I will have to be very cognizant of the drainage nonetheless with the house, hardscape and landscape. It will be quite the challenge. I probably will be back here for some help soon. Cheers!
  14. Oops "Tamsin" sorry I mucked up your name. That did the trick! Thanks. Why yes that lot does have a 140' elevation change! Wish me luck with the design. Thanks again.
  15. Wow, didn't imagine I would get such a quick answer from the VW Landmark guru herself! So, this is new to me. I just edited the crop inward and yes that does cut off the geometry of the ends of the contours that radically angle back but how do I know exactly how much to cut off? It seems that I than have a chance to cut off the actual dimensions of the lot that I will need to work with the setbacks- the topo survey extents are exactly to the lot lines. Should I create a crop object from the edges of the 3D polys- the boundary of them- and replace/delete the crop object that was created with the site model and I guess is a bit larger than the extents of the original geometry? Thank you Tasmin! I have watched just about all of your tutorial movies and love all the information you provide, even if I don't quite get it right all the time!
  16. New to site modeling and have two very challenging "ski slope" lots that I may be designing houses for. I have both topographic surveys with good data, I have imported both files into VW with no issues and have (mostly) figured out the great site modeling capability of Vectorworks but one file is adding tall side fins on both sides of the model, creating tall cliffs of terrain and making it useless to use as I begin exploring a design with a massing model I have created for the house. Can somebody please help me in understanding what is going on with the data to change it so drastically? First screen shot is overhead view of the 3D polys with height data ready to create a site model with. 2nd screen shot is the site model created with the wildly exaggerated and added geometry at the edges. Third screen shot is an isometric view of the 3D polys showing the correct contours Fourth screen shot is the site model with the cliffs at the edges. Thanks
  17. One way to do this is to create a symbol from broken up parts of doors created from the door tool. Because the panels are not equally divisible - the two smaller panels are not 1/2 of the larger panel - you need to initially create three doors from which to chose your parts from. Door #1 could be the framed opening of 144” x 80”, any configuration would work but I would just choose a two panel slider, then create a 160” x 80” two panel glass slider, Door #2, then create a 64” x 80” two panel glass slider (figure out your rail widths and input those to the #2 and #3 doors if different from the default) Line up the doors on top on top of each other in plan view with some space between them and note (measure) how the panels (rails) line up against each other and the position of the inside and outside panels and then go to an isometric view (this must be done if you are drawing in 3D) select each door individually and select MODIFY>CONVERT>GROUP>Don’t convert sub object to groups for each door. You will be double clicking to then get into each group. Door #1 delete the two panels, it becomes your correctly sized frame opening, Door #2 select and copy one door panel and paste it in plan view into the center of Door #1 group (double clicking to enter the group frame object) as the outside fixed panel, and then enter Door #3 group and select copy one panel and paste it in Door #1 group in plan view with the inside rails overlapping against the center large panel as the active, inner panel and against the frame/edge of the door, mirror that panel to the other side. Delete door groups #2 and #3. Select all (they should be all in one group) and create a symbol making sure to select the break walls mode. Now you will have your odd sized three panel door that will insert correctly. It sounds (reads) like a lot but you will find you can actually do this quite quickly once you’ve gone through the process once or twice. Good luck.
  18. After creating a rough model for analyzing for a project I've made a window symbol (several, in all iterations, just for testing anything that might work) on my project's roof, and then all kinds of simple roofs, again just to try to make something work and I cannot for the life of me get my window symbol to attach to the roof and invoke the Edit Roof Elements>Edit Dormer dialog box. The only window that I can get to work is a generic widow from the resource browser but it is not editable after the dormer is created and will not create a dormer if I try to customize it. Creating a generic window from the window tool will immediately invoke the "you must use a 3D symbol to create a roof element" when placing it there but the 3D window symbol I've created does nothing. What simple thing am I missing here? Do the classes or layers have to match up? Thanks Figured it out- Sometimes you just have to follow each step in the directions lol
  19. I fear this will make me seem completely clueless but even as I've used Vectorworks for decades I have never installed a 3rd party plugin and am not sure exactly how to do so. I found a Velux skylight from bimobject to download and it is a plugin, which I assume will then include some adjustable parameters to the skylight object. Regardless of this specific plugin, I think it is high time that I finally learned this to be able to access what seems to be a whole world of available useful plugins out there. I see that I need to go to Tools>Plug-ins>Plug-in Manager and here is where I get lost. The downloaded file is a folder containing four items: a folder labeled -VMS Data containing 10 .txt scripts; a EmbedAH.qtr (I don't know exactly what this is) file describing a bunch of stuff about the geometry and display of the object; a Embed.rsrc executable file; and then the actual Velux Modular Skylight.vso plugin. When in the Plug-in manager I would assume I select >third party plugins>install and then locate the folder but in doing so everything is greyed in the folder. This is all I know. Is the folder supposed to be available to install or just the actual .vso file, and how do you know what type of object it is to select when you get to that dialogue box, and then how do you find it and use it if you successfully install it? And if you just install the .vso file, what do you do with the other stuff in the folder? I'm sure this is not particularly complicated but just need one clear explanation of the process. Thanks very much in advance for someone hopefully rolling their eyes but being able to clearly explain the basics I am missing. Edit: I'm not even sure if this is the correct forum to post this so moderators please move if necessary to get a quicker response.- thanks!
  20. Thanks- should have thought of that. While not quite as convenient it gets me what I want. T
  21. Thank you Matt- I thought I was completely loosing my mind. Trying to match a window mfr. color. T
  22. The former magnifying glass color picker or sampler; allowing you to maneuver over any collection of pixels to sample and add a new color to your file has changed into something I cannot figure out. The magnifying glass tool at the top to sample is gone, there seems to be an eyedropper tool at the bottom that is its replacement and I can get a circle magnifying curser after a few attempts but maneuvering it over a color sample yields nothing when clicking (left or right) to get that color added to the attributes palette of the file. What the heck am I doing wrong? Thanks
  23. I downloaded 2014 a few days ago and followed the subsequent downloading of all the resource libraries (I chose all) and I'm pretty sure I have everything including textures but I can't find them. I can find some of them, such as the default folder, but can't find them where they used to be located in the Libraries Folder where they used to reside and in their own folders such as Metals/Glass and Brick/Stone etc... The "Find Resource" function is as useless to me as ever. I have never once been able to find anything using it. Thanks
  24. Seems to increase the more annotation objects you have, like window/door graphic symbols and arrows pointing to objects.
  25. Is there a Pepper Tree in the photo-realistic library, or a tree or shrub that has a leaf pattern pretty similar that I could use as a decal on an outdoor equipment cabinet? This is for a major cell phone company that I do photo simulations for planning submittals. I can't seem to find the Latin name example, was hoping that someone with more plant knowledge than I might have another example that might work. Other than that I might try to do an image prop and mask. On a related note, searching the X-Frog site if I found and wanted to purchase which format would we use for Vectorworks, 3ds? Thanks
