Mechanics, Are you able to somehow import shapefiles with just VW Architect? I thought this was only available with Landmark. IMHO, I think this should be part of the Architect package as well, nudge, nudge.

Using Rendered Viewports to create Elevatons
MKingsley replied to CipesDesign's topic in Architecture
Graham, The Viewports have their own lighting options at the bottom of the OIP. That probably needs turning on or a bump up in intensity. Also, if your lights in the design layers are pointing directly, horizontally at the elevations, you won't get any shadows in the RenderWorks rendering. That may be what you want anyway... Tilt them down to some degree to get shadows. Keep tweaking all the knobs and buttons like the Wizard behind the curtain and you can get any look you want. It does take time and experimenting at first. -
Instead of Artistic Renderworks, try using one of the "regular" Renderworks options - Fast, Final, or Custom. And then add the HL on top.
-
Check out the "Slab Object" plug-in by Patrick Higgins at http://www.vectordepot.com/PlugIns1.shtml. You set the class of each surface to get different colors or textures all the way around.
-
One of the color shaders that comes with Renderworks is called Roof Tiles. Make sure you scoll down to the bottom of the pop-up list to see it. It does a good job right off the bat of a grayscale roof or siding shingle texture. You can have two copies and change the color of each to differentiate between the two. To make the rendering more white, turn on Ambient Lighting to at least 75%, and then set the sun position to something close to your pacific time. Then in the edit window, change the two colors of that shader to white to completely get rid of the gray. I don't know what "1x8 "teardrop" 3 drop siding" is...no help there.

Wow, I never knew that. I thought I read somewhere that it was a bug. Thanks for that solution.

Polygon fill and lasso modes in Viewports
MKingsley replied to P Retondo's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Yes, if I want to fill in a part of the roof, that is on a design layer, with a hatch, let's say, that's being shown in elevation in Hidden Line, I can use the fill bucket mode of the polygon tool and do this in the Viewport Annotation window. Or if I want to put a heavy outline around the whole building elevation, I can use the Lasso mode and that works as well, and again, on objects from different layers as being shown in the viewport. Sometimes the lasso mode does funny things like wrap around shapes within the larger shape but is easily cleaned up with the reshape tool. But like I said before, it sometimes doesn't work at all and I don't know why. -
Polygon fill and lasso modes in Viewports
MKingsley replied to P Retondo's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
I have found this to work on most occasions. I say "most" because sometimes it doesn't work and I'm not sure why. Sorry I can't help more than that. I will usually use that tool mode with a hidden line rendering if that makes any difference. HTH. -
It sounds like you're in "Dashed Hidden Line" mode instead of just "Hidden Line". And do your walls have a solid fill?

Hidden line and Section viewports really speed up if you set the 3D conversion resolution to LOW in the 3D pane of VW preferences. HTH

Watch out for "autosave" while in Viewport edit.
MKingsley replied to Michael_Eschenbach's topic in Architecture
I moved the mouse all over the place, both screens, and nothing for a good ten minutes. In the force quit window it said VW was not responding. Just now, VW crashed completely on me while trying to print to PDF. This time I was in the Edit Annotation mode which is probably not a good thing to do.. I'll still keep the autosave feature on though, it has saved my butt as well. -
Watch out for "autosave" while in Viewport edit.
MKingsley replied to Michael_Eschenbach's topic in Architecture
Yeah, I think there is still something going on here that is still not right with even the latest version of 12.5.1(65397). My beachball is currently spinning non-stop with a sheet open (not in any edit mode but just finished printing to PDF) and the indication of "Backup complete" still showing in the upper right corner. Time to force quit I guess. -
Thanks Mike, that looks great!

No, I don't mean editing the existing choices. I mean like adding curves and other elements to an arrow. Or instead of a dot, how about a star? Or even half an arrow like is on the extents framing indicator.
-
Is there any way to get a custom arrow head into the choices in the attributes palette?
-
It would be great if the viewport name could show up in the shape pane of the OIP next to where it says "Viewport" or "Section viewport". You would still edit it in the data pane, but since one spends more time in the shape pane, you could see the name of the viewport while editing it and therefore have a better chance of remembering that name when you go looking for that particular viewport in the navigation palette. It's not an issue when there's only one viewport on a sheet, but when there are many on a sheet or you have overlapping viewports it's easier to know their names and select them directly from the navigation palette when you need to.

There were two releases of 12.5.1, the second one fixes this problem . Make sure you have the latest one which is version #65397.

Don't know what system you're on, but on Macs "Cmd+C" is Copy. "Cmd+X" is cut. Why not "Cmd+plus sign" for add surface and "Cmd+minus sign" for clip surface?
-
If you're talking about two separate files on each screen, then yes you can. But if you mean a viewport on one screen and its design layer on the other from the same file, the answer is no. It sure would be nice if you could, though.

Politeness from Petri
MKingsley replied to dontevenjoke's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Petri reminds of me the old grumpy senile uncle that everyone puts up with at family gatherings. You engage him at your own peril. He comes with the territory and is part of the landscape. But he is also a source of entertainment and if viewed as such, is every bit as toothless as your grumpy old uncle. With love and appreciation, -
If you're on a Mac w/ Tiger, you can download a widget called The Daily Grind which is basically a stopwatch that you can tick on or off. You can have one for each job. And one to track the length of naps...

Speaking of formulas, does anyone use the wall area functions and are you getting accurate numbers returned? I just recently started to try my hand at the worksheets and double checked the results by actually measuring the surface area of a wall and found the results displayed in the worksheet to be incorrect. I talked to a tech at VW who was discovering the same inaccuracies. For example, a wall measuring 8 feet high by 10 feet long returns an area of 98 s.f. The tech said he would check with the engineers and get back to me. Maybe the waste factor has already been added in...

Better server for this forum!
MKingsley replied to Petri's topic in Wishes Granted / Issues Resolved
It's been painless for me here. However, I will add a separate complaint about the searches for past posts being limited to 200. That doesn't take you far enough back in time for most subject lines. -
Stair text and reporting bugs
MKingsley replied to Don@Black Dog's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
I think Don is talking about controlling the length of the line, not the end marker. I agree the end marker should stop at wherever the stair break is set and not go beyond if you don't want it to. I don't use the arrow feature but instead make my own because of this.
