  1. @cberg thanks for this, but none of the roof face suggestions in that thread work. I need something rotated about two axes since the roof face I want is pitched, but it also rises from a pitched roof face. My "fit to object" walls also keep disappearing at random! VW tech support time!
  2. Anyone have bright ideas on how to create a roof like below using roof face objects? I did this with extrudes that were rotated on two axes. Roof face allows one to set a pitch, but I couldn't find a way to rotate it on the perpendicular axis as well, would be a nice feature to have a "rotation" parameter for this, IM(H)O.
  3. Michael, Thanks for this. Would like the texture to have that hatch, but the hatch doesn't seem to "behave well." It doesn't seem to follow the grain of the wood in the texture.
  4. Just started using the duct tools and they are super helpful for design, but I echo the need to move them off of strictly Cartesian geometry. It would be nice to parametrically rotate them in 3D. I, too, had to extrude along path to create the end result of angled ducts, which are very typical in single-family residential and, as mike m oz pointed out, best practice to to reduce resistance/static pressure. It also reduces the space consumed.
  5. I've been working on a model and twice now, the stair object has become "segmented" when displayed in Hidden Line mode, seemingly at random. It renders fine in Renderworks. Any thoughts? segmented stair.vwx
  6. Still grappling with this. Years ago, I felt like using classes to control 'Existing,' 'New,' and 'Demolished," was overly difficult, requiring, for instance, walls to be segmented so that portions of them could classed differently, difficulty deleting door and window objects and leaving no trace of them, etc. I'm feeling good about using extra Design Layers for this, but it does require a complete set of duplicates of each slab level of the building for "Proposed" and "Existing" layers to get the stair objects to behave well graphically (i.e. a dashed graphic on lower floor and solid above, etc.) In my case, for example, I have a garage on the lowest level, and two levels above. Even though the garage level isn't being modified, I need a duplicate layer, '0-Slab Proposed' in addition '0-Slab' so I can set the upper Layer of the stair object to '1-Slab Proposed' vs. '1-Slab', etc.
  7. Can anyone tell me why the lower colored bars disappear from the interior wall in this rendering and why there are ugly black lines on my curtain wall? 607 SA Ave perspective 230414.pdf 943032844_607SAAvev2023.vwx
  8. Iskra, Thank you, that did work, but is it quite tedious to manually update each sheet in a published set. Is there a way to change this universally? I've never encountered such a problem before.
  9. I'm having an issue with publishing a plan set in VW2023, where the resultant pdf has the sheets in (what I assume is) "current view" vs. the specified print size, in the is case Arch D, 24x36". I can "export" each page without issue, though the software seems to keep defaulting to "Current View" vs. "Page 1 to 1." If I don't switch it back to "Page 1 to 1" I get what "publish" is giving me, basically a small version of my sheet layer surrounded by an enormous white border. Please advise.
  10. Thanks! It seems like the only way to include the existing and proposed within the stories format is to use classes, since the software doesn't seem to allow more than one layer per story level at the same elevation, nor more than one story with the same elevation. Am I missing something?
  11. I'm trying to transition to stories and was wondering if anyone has best practices for including both as-built and proposed walls, etc., in a single VW file. Previously, I'd just have "existing" floor & wall layers and "proposed" floor & wall layers in the same VW file and could reference whatever I needed from sheet layers. Not quite so clear how to do this with a model organized by stories. Thoughts?
  12. I have tried nearly every option for importing a VW model into SketchUp, and recently found software that does a good job. 'Transmutr' is a standalone application (not a plugin for SU.) See below for a comparison of various VW export/SU import approaches. Many of them fail to include the line work, so I've shown the results in both SU 'Default Style' and 'Hidden Line' to illustrate. I feel like Transmutr is the way to go, at least at present.
  13. Yes, the DWG import is the one on the far right. Glazing doesn't come through as translucent (each surface needs to be changed individually) and numerous other errors in the geometry. I suspect it's an issue on the VW export side.
  14. I'm having continued (additional?) challenges with this. I started a new post below, any insight would be appreciated!)
  15. I've been trying numerous approaches to export a 3D model from Vectorworks for import into SketchUp with mixed results. The best results have come with an .fbx export from Vectorworks, and import into SketchUp with proprietary SU extensions, however the results are mixed at best. The geometry comes into SU as very complex nested layers of groups and components, and exploding them results, ultimately, in faceted geometry where there might be a simple wall plane, for example. Depending on the SU extension, the model comes in more or less cleanly, and some of them show up without line work, for some reason. I've attached screenshots of the various .fbx imports, both in "Default Style" and "HiddenLine." Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
  16. I'm trying to lay out a design that features a main house, with finished floor 1'6" above grade, and a garage in front, with finished floor at grade. I'm not wed to using stories, regardless, I cannot get the walls of the garage to be 1'6" below the main house, even though the inserted doors are. What's the best way to do this?
  17. We're seeking an experienced Vectorworks architectural designer/drafter on an as-needed/contract basis. Typical duties include: Site measurement and documentation Creation of BIM models Production of Planning and Construction Drawings Your skills should include: Vectorworks, 3D and 2D drafting Preparation of permitting documents Enthusiasm for design and sustainability Ability to work remotely, self-starter, detail-oriented +'s are experience with Sketchup and mad rendering skills Essential Habitat Architecture is a small firm focused on high-design, high-performance homes that leverage Passive House (Passivhaus) technology. Intern Development Program (IDP) toward licensure is a possibility.
  18. Hello, I'm a long time Vectorworks user but am new to "stories." I've assembled a project and am having trouble getting the exterior cladding to be seamless between the building walls and the parapet walls. I'm also not entirely clear on how the upper and lower bounds are set for various wall components, i.e. "layerless" vs. "story above/below," etc. Any insight would be appreciated. low-rise 4plex v2021.vwx
  19. I'm going to withdraw my recommendation for FBX Importer and SimLab! I bought the plugin in February and used it then without incident. Recently, I wanted to use it again. I opened SketchUp, ungraded as requested, tried to use the plugin and was told it needed to be registered. I couldn't make that work and have spent the better part of two weeks going back and forth with customer service, being accused of installing it on multiple machines and being told to do the same failed registration steps over and over again. They told me I had "one last chance." It didn't work and they've stopped answering my emails. I found a similar plugin from "skimp" (https://skimp4sketchup.com) that seems to be working fine so far...

  21. I've been working to import a VW 2020 model into Sketchup Pro 2021 and found the SimLab FBX Importer to work smoothly, though I now have a complex SU model with nested groups and components. The walls and floor slabs are split by story, but there's no Vectorworks rendering to mask the transitions. Since each wall is a series of nested groups and components, it is challenging to clean this up. Any advice/insight? I've started a tread here:

  23. A video that discusses three free extensions for Sketchup (Cleanup among them) that are useful for tidying up CAD imports:
  24. FBX Importer here: https://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/FBX_Importer_For_Sketchup-main.aspx $79. Worth every penny in my estimation. It was a night & day difference in the import quality and the lightness of the Sketchup model. I had the sense that the 3DS model, even if I managed to clean it up, would continue to bog down Sketchup. The FBX model was nimble off the bat. I did the .fbx export from a Design Layer Viewport in VW which had the individual design layers linked to it. I set the export to the current layer. There are other ways to do it.
