  1. I?m not sure if this should be a bugsubmit or a wishlist item, but I want to bring attention to this issue. The ?extrude along path? tool doesn?t work as it should in VW 12.5.2 Windows. Try this for yourself: draw a polyline shaped like the number 5 (with corners) and convert it to a NURBS curve. Then extrude any shape along the path?.... it works fine. Now, take the same NURBS curve (before extruding it), and pull any vertex into a different ?Z? height so that the NURBS curve is no longer planar. Now the ?extrude along path? doesn?t work. Try the same thing again, except this time use a NURBS curve that is shaped like an ?S? without the sharp corners. It works just fine under both conditions? whether the curve is planar or not. Oddly, the extrude along path tool works with non-planar NURBS curves if all the vertices are corners (first degree vertices).

Can anyone testify if this same problem exists in VW 2008?

  2. I tried it again ... took a 2D polyline with corners and one radius end. Extruded along path ... worked fine. I took the same exact 2D polyline, converted it to nurbs curve, then moved one vertex in the Z direction (off plane). Now tried the extrude along path with same profile ... it failed.

Still need help with the original problem....

  3. I tried this many times ... the extrusion fails due to invalid path or profile objects. I suspect it has something to do with whether the nurbs curve is 1 degree or 2/3/4 degree curve. In my parking lot, I have mostly 1 degree nurbs curves with rounded peninsulas. I notice that if I use a single nurbs curve that was snapped to 3D locus points (and the locus points have diff 'Z' values), then it sometimes works if I don't have any 1 degree curves involved (that is ... no corners)

    I still need help....

  4. can anyone tell me how to actually model a parking lot curb (and asphalt surface) accurately in 3D ? Specifically, I've tried (for a long time) to figure out how to extrude the gutter pan/curb shape around the perimeter, but it only works if the lot is on a planar surface. I want to show the actual elevations of the curb as it is sloped for drainage purposes. When trying the extrude along path, it only works if the path is in the same plane.... yes, I know I can slope the plane, but in reality the curb is not in the same plane. My ultimate goal is to layout the curb, then extract the nurbs edge and use them to make a nurbs surface for the asphalt. I can't get past the curb layout. Help..... please.

  5. I need help .... I have never been able to figure out how to make a suspended acoustical ceiling (standard office ceiling in the US) look realistic in regard to the light reflected off of it. I want to avoid radiosity (too complicated and my CPU may not be up to the task), and I've tried placing many spotlights directed up at the ceiling ... this seems too cumbersome to be the best way. Any thoughts / tricks / tips... please.....

  6. I can't figure this out .... if I have 2 or more viewports on a single sheet layer, and I use numbered keynotes on the first viewport, it appears the keynotes for the second viewport will continue in the same numbering sequence and in the same legend. What if I want two separate sets of keynotes and two legends, one for each viewport and have each set start with "1" ? Can this be done? (it has me stumped).

  7. I've struggled with animations for years... once you generate it, it is now a Quicktime file and you can't do any editing in VW. Lots of edits are possible with QT Pro, but nothing like... adding a chair, or changing the carpet texture. To update.... fix the VW file then make another movie in VW.

PS: don't waste time trying to edit QT animations in iMovie unless you don't care if it looks crappy... poor resolution.

  8. I couldn't find the "bug submit" section, so I turned this into a wish list item. "I wish" the shutter feature would work correctly. Try this .... make a 3D wall, insert the default window (double hung). Then select "settings" and include an INTERIOR shutter. It shows up on the EXTERIOR side of the window (as evidenced by the top sash of the dbl hung window is on the exterior side of the wall). Next, go back and change the shutter to a "custom" and choose "rustic". Then go back and look at the result. When rendered, only one shutter shows the diagonal board. Please listen Nemetsheck....... when planning version 13, it is better to make all the features of your software work correctly than to keep adding more features. Nothing more frustrating when something doesn't work than to keep trying it, thinking it is operator error ... when it isn't.

Also: the same window has this problem.... shutters do not render correctly with the class assignment unless you have inputted a mullion setting ... strange, but true.

  9. I had the same thing happen on my Windows XP Pro Micro Explorer browser about 5 days ago. It must have gone away all by itself because, after two days of "no joy" it went away and I don't remember doing anything.... no problems now...... also, I never had any problems from my home iMac 10.3.4 with Safari.

  10. thanks for the confirmation...... in VW 10 I had a shareware tool that allowed certain preferences to show up in an easy-to-access list in the tool palette. Is there any such tool for VW 12.5 ? (It could come in handy to toggle "zoom line thickness" on and off)

  11. I've been working on a file and intially line weights were satisfactory. At some unknown time, when I go to edit the design layers, the line weights are all too much thicker. The same layers in a viewport look fine. I checked the scales on the design layer and the viewports and they match (usually 1/8" = 1 ft). I often work with "zoom line thickness" checked, but now I have to switch it off and on because the line weights are so thick it is distracting. What have I done wrong ?

  12. I hope this was brought up before .. but couldn't find it. The truss tool is nice, but automaitically puts the truss in level. Many (most roofs) are slightly sloped and it would be nice (and simple) to place an input box in the OIP so that each end of the truss could input its own bearing elevation. As it is now, the hybrid object can't be rotated, and I have to convert it to a symbol, then rotate it ..... and it is still imprecise... numbers are better because struct eng show bearing heights.

  13. Has anyone tried using VW 12.5 for Windows on an intel mac under bootcamp ? I read a May 2007 Macworld article that stated contradictory things..... it said bootcamp with XP was best ("near native") for speed, but also said 3D applications worked poorly, while stating bootcamp used both duo core processors (Parrallels did not). I'm confused. (I am curious because I am thinking of changing from a Windows PC to a Mac ... but my VW license is Windows.) Katie: can you make a recommendation ? Does VW 12.5 work well under bootcamp and does it work better with Vista or XP Pro ?

  14. OK .....thanks.... but here is another question that has been asked before...... why can't Nemetschek have a "go to" webpage that lists the best hardware specs to run VW ? I know you don't like to recommend stuff, but how about simply listing the qualities a video card and/or CPU should have ? I see many posts that seem to conclude with the issue of an incompatible video card, but never see a list of what video cards should be had ... nor of what characteristics / Specs should be on the card.

  15. it appears the Landmark section isn't being monitored by VW so I thought I'd ask VW tech support on this board to look at the subject line "nurbs roadway" on the Landmark section and see if they can help. It appears to me the nurbs roadway tool just plain doesn't work. If so, please fix it on the next release. Thanks.

  16. good article .... but what about speed? How much slower will VW 12.5.x run on Vista as compared to XP ? (for the same PC machine .... single or dual processor. My boss may buy me a new dual processor machine.... I need to know the issues involved)

  17. I tried to add an image of my situation ... but couldn't figure out how to post it on this website. In sum, the height issue is not present.... I did not have a problem with heights to start with and still followed your advice. I found out the "invisible" 3D site model was related to the display properties in the 'edit' window for the site model. However, the problem still remains that I can't get the nurbs road to work. The other roadway tools seem to work fine, so I've learned how things work using the striaght and curved roadway tools. For the nurbs tool, I still get an error box that claims my pad is outlside the hull when it clearly isn't. I checked the fence distance... it seems to be OK. When I use the nurbs tool, I get the error dialog box, and when I click to close it I discover that VW went ahead and calculated the new site model anyway... except that it is grossly wrong with contours all out of whack. This is being done on new test files, so there is no corruption issue. I tried making the site model huge so that the road would be even further away from the hull.... but it didn't work. The only good thing is that I'm doing this to learn something and I'm not working on a project fir this ... otherwise I'd be up a creek without a paddle. Thanks for your help... ... send more if you have any.

  18. sorry... I should have been more exact in my description of the problem. I have a 3D terrain already modeled and showing in top/plan view with contour lines. As soon as I click on the nurb roadway tool, the terrain disappears from view. It is still there, since I see the curser snap points as the mouse hovers over it. Then I draw a nurbs roadway that is clearly inside the boundary of the (invisible) terrain site model. The roadway appears in all views (2D, 3D isometric) but the terrian is still invisible. When I click on the invisible snap point for the terrain and then in the OIP I click "update" I get an error box that says "pad intersecting the fence or a hull"

That is it. From your answer above, it seems as though my problem is unique. It could be operator error, since I am sort of at the "advanced beginner" level. Any help is appreciated.

  19. thanks for the response ... but the problem is that I can not see the landscape. I can see the 3D nurb roadway just fine. The site model disappears when the road is generated. I can't even see the wire frame site model ... just the road surface. I have tried the things you listed... including the "update" button.

  20. I've never been able to get the nurbs roadway tool to work. When I try it, it will draw the roadway just fine, but the 3D rendering of the landscape disappears. The other roadway tools work fine.... and I can see the rendered surfaces and contours .... but not with the nurbs tool. Is this a bug or am I missing something ?
