  1. I am hesitant to try it, (and don't know how) but can anyone tell me if the cloud services rendering works well ... and fast ? Could i use it to render a quicktime movie animation ... which usually takes many hours ? Can you tell me how much faster ? (If my current movie takes 3 hours on my 27" iMac i7 quad core, how long will cloud services take ? )
  2. is it possible to apply a hatch to a wall so that the hatch shows up on a 3D model in isometric views .... with hidden line rendering ? If so ... please tell me how. I tried to apply it as I would for a texture, but it doesn't work ... unless there is some preference setting I can't find.
  3. I rendered a bathroom on the design layer in RW, then converted it to a viewport and rendered the viewport in RW. The attached file shows the image from the design layer (used grab to cut/paste) underneath the viewport rendering. Notice the soffit lighting in the viewport is grossly different and the fascia shows the point lights behind it. In essence the design layer renders correctly, but the viewport has problems. Can anyone tell me what's wrong ? Why don't both renderings look the same ? (I checked the lighting controls in the viewport. Nothing fixed it.)
  4. I haven't figured out something about the line types. If I use the "fence post" line type, for instance, I figured out that if I start in a scale of 1/4" = 1'-0" then when I move the circle posts to be 1" apart, then they show up in the drawing as being 4 ft apart, which makes some sense. However, once I've made that line type edit, and I apply it to a line, then change the scale to be 1/8" = 1'-0", then my fence post symbols are now 8 ft apart. How do change the line type so that the "posts" show up the same distance apart no matter what the drawing scale is ?
  5. I use VW14 regularly on Mac OS at home, and on Windows 7 Pro at work and transport files back and forth all the time without incident. One interesting thing ... VW reports to Nemetschek if it is activated, and only allows my license to be used on one machine at a time. If I leave it running on one machine then try to open it on the other, it won't let me do it. Pretty good technology for Nemetschek, but sort of annoying for me. (every once in a while I feel like a texture or two may get changed during the swap, but I've never really been able to pin down a reportable issue ... might be operator error.)
  6. thanks for the tips. I guess it isn't as easy as I thought it should be ... unless I buy camera match. If I did this often, I might buy it, but this is not a frequent thing for me ...
  7. I can't figure out how to do this and ask for help ..... I have a photo of a hallway and I want to show different flooring in the photo. When I draw the 3D floor and render it in perspective (from the same camera viewpoint as the photo) the photo (which is on a different layer) disappears. I want to show an image where my new floor is overlaid on top of the photo to show the new floor with the old walls/ceiling. I figure this ought to be easy for someone who knows what they're doing. Help please.....
  8. thank you .... I've been annoyed for years. Time to be happy again
  9. I don't use the Adobe help system much, in part because when I try to search for a word, whatever the system finds is then highlighted with a gray box around each instance of the word and it is very annoying to read. Does anyone know how to search for a word without the grayed high-light ?
  10. I have a file of a 3D building that was started about 5 years ago and i update it regularly. It seems that I frequently notice when I open it that some objects have lost their textures. Then I spend time re-assigning the textures I drew before. I've also noticed some objects changing their 'z' height. It is possible I might have mistakenly changed some class settings or other things to change the textures, but I doubt it. I've seen this behavior on other, older files. Does anyone else have this problem with older files? Is there a way to 'update' a possible corrupted file ? Is there a way to tell if the file is corrupted ? I'm using VW14 on both Windows and Mac.
  11. thanks Peter ... I used your directions with ease. This is easy when you know what you're doing ...
  12. can someone tell me how to merge two documents together? That is, if a have 150 resources on one doucment, and another doucment has 200 resources, and about 100 resources are the same on both documents, what is the easiest way to merge all the reources on to one file ? I know how to move individual reasources (import/export) but there must be a easier way than moving them one at a time.
  13. OK ... thanks ... the Armstrong site is probably as good as I'll get. I was hoping for VCT textures that are not based on images, so that they wouldn't show a repeating pattern. PS: I notice you can download the images in Revit format ... is there any way to convert it to VW ? Can you convert the 3ds format to VW ?
  14. thanks .... but .... those textures are not what I would call the standard VCT you might see in Target stores ... and the textures repeat to form an obvious pattern that is not present in the real thing. Anyone else with VCT textures out there ?
  15. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find textures for standard 12" vinyl composition tile (VCT) ? I see the VW libraries have various VCT textures, but none of them are what I would call "standard" styles like you might see in any department store or school hallways. (That is ... the less expensive styles.) Any help is appreciated. PS: I know I can find the images on the manufacture's sites and make my own image textures, but I figure someone must have already done it.
  16. John ... I had given up on this, but I am happy that someone like you took the time to show me there is a fix. Thank you so much .... ... although I still think Nemetsheck should spend some time fixing this "symetrical bump" issue.
  17. You've already done me a favor by showing it isn't just my lack of understanding. Thanks for the help. (PS: this is a long range project ... I'm keeping a 3D model of my church for use in additions and renovations. This is the existing wall condition. No rush to make it right. )
  18. Here are the files. Thanks for your help. The big squares in the grid are supposed to be 16" x 16".
  19. I tried to make a new texture for a brick pattern that is unusual. I made a grid of lines to represent the mortar joints, then used that grid line image as the "bump" image, with regular color. When the texture is applied, my CMU blocks that were supposed to be 16" wide are now about 14" wide and about 12" tall instead of 8" tall. Obviously the texture 'bump' image mapping is distorting the proportions. I tried to reset the image size, and I can get the horizontal distance correct, but then the vertical distance between lines is wrong. Is this a bug or could the operator be doing something wrong ?
  20. problem is fixed. Instead of spending 30 minutes trying to figure it out and write on this board, I should have done the standard fix repair: I closed the file, quit VW, and when I opened it back up in order to respond to the comments, now it works and renders correctly under both modes. Thanks for your response ....
  21. the two attached images are the exact same file. I did nothing to them other than change the rendering mode from Open GL to Renderworks. Can anyone explain why the image prop trees disappear and the rendering of a sidewalk and mulch area turns into black ?
  22. I switched over to triangles ... but I find the triangle faces distort the textures applied to them. It is also taken me too long to figure out that an image shader on a DTM just won't work. The repeating pattern is bound to show up poorly in a desired view, sooner or later. It seems like nothing is perfect. I like the 3D extruded contours because I can instantly see the elevation and grade changes ... with the triangles you have to interpret the lighting as it reflects off the surface. I'm much happier now ... I've spent considerable time figuring this out and it now seems to work .
  23. I'm glad I'm not the only one having issues with this. I've repeatedly tried to move the texture bed above the DTM - to no avail. HOWEVER: in the middle of trying all sorts of things, it looks like the solution might be to un-check the box in the OIP that says "Show 3D". You read that correctly .... if you want to see it in a 3D rendering, uncheck the "Show 3D" box that appears in the OIP (when you've selected the site modifier texture bed object. I would tear my hair out over this, but I've already lost it all. Thank you all for your input ....
  24. If anyone cares .... here is the type of behavior I see (attached image). The curved walkway doesn't pefectly 'paint' on top of the DTM. When I have a pad (as in the upper right) the texture is distorted along the wrong face and the texture attribute tool can not be used to set the texture to the correct (horizontal) face. I'm still open for suggestions .... although frustrated.
  25. I'm totally frustrated with this. I can get the texture bed to map to the DTM surface, but I can't manipulate the texture/color and the 'bed' never seems to paint the DTM surface. It always displays the sort of conflicted image when two objects occupy the same space. I can't email the DTM because the file size is too big. I've checked a million times if there are two DTMs or beds present. I update the DTM. I check the "proposed" DTM display versus "existing". I try different render modes. I made new DTMs on new files, and the same thing occurs. Is there a better instructional reference out there somewhere ? The VW manual just isn't sufficient.
