VECTORWORKS FREE
Miguel Barrera replied to lcda's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
There must be a valid reason why VW is licensed with a dongle outside the US. I cannot imagine myself carrying a dongle everywhere to use the software. With the single license here you can install it in as many computers as you like but you can only use it in one computer at a time. -
You need to set the nonplot class to invisible in the viewport class list itself. The document class visibility is independent from the viewport class visibility. In other words, if the document nonplot class is set to invisible and the viewport still shows this class, then you need to set the viewport nonplot class to invisible also.

Signature - computer specs and Vectorworks version

If you are seeking advice, the information will be beneficial to come up with a solution but on the other hand, if you ar giving the advice, it is irrelevant. -
VECTORWORKS FREE
Miguel Barrera replied to lcda's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Free software? You must be kidding. How is NNA going to survive if it gives their work for free? VW is a bargain compared to AutoCAD or Microstation which cost about 3 times more and they produce inferior quality drawings. The reason those programs have a larger user base is because they have brain washed architectural and engineering firms into thinking they have a better product. So if a government agency standardizes on a particular software, everybody working for them have to use the same format and consultants have no other choice but comply with these requirements to get the jobs. The same effect had IBM and MS on companies when the media argued that PC compatibles with their text only interface were better for business and real applications while the Mac was just a toy for playing games. And I remember well that I just laughed out loud when MS came out with Windows which to this date is still buggy and works only half the time. Google can afford to give software for free which is an effort to gain users. But you should know that nothing is free in life and down the road, you are going to have pay in some form or another for using the software. -
It certainly cannot export something that is complicated as you have experienced. Of course the programmers can recognize a nurbs surface but most likely it has not been coded correctly. Have you tried exporting something simple as a 4-sided surface? If I remember well that is what I did to learn the construction code.

Commercial Demand List (bids/tenders, please!)

You can try this function. FUNCTION AddHole(VAR objectToGetHole: HANDLE; holeTemplate: HANDLE) : BOOLEAN; I have not tested it so do not know if it actually works. If not, then ClipSurface is the only alternative.

Is there a way to update a saved view?
Miguel Barrera replied to aaronmason's topic in General Discussion
After you create new classes and layers there is a button in the edit dialog where you can add to the saved views. -
Can VectorWorks be used for Engineering as well?
Miguel Barrera replied to Richard Perrine's topic in General Discussion
Richard, The following web page shows the VW capabilities to build 3D surfaces 3D Power Pack Although VW is not geared for engineering and consequently, lacks the content that you may be looking for, the program can certainly be adapted to any discipline. As Raymond stated and with some scripting, you can create powerful turnkey solutions that can rival other more expensive CAD programs with engineering packages. As a civil engineer, I have used VW to create plans and estimates for road and traffic projects. The main reason for choosing VW is the ability to create the tools and the workflow that I feel is the best to complete the projects. As a result, I am able to finish projects in a fraction of the time that my counterparts will take using those expensive pre-packaged engineering solutions. -
Where can I find "object property index" list
Miguel Barrera replied to VectorBub's topic in Vectorscript
As an alternate solution and if they are all circles or 360 degree arcs, yo can use SetBBox: {Get center of original circle} GetBBox(circleHdl,p1X,p1Y,p2X,p2Y); centerX:= (p1X+p2X)/2; centerY:= (p1Y+p2Y)/2; {Change the circle radius} SetBBox(circleHdl,centerX-rad2,centerY+rad2,centerX+rad2,centerY-rad2); -
The shp, dbf, and prj files are created by Arcview. The prj file is a text file that can be edited directly following a specific format but the dbf, which is a dBase 4 database format, would be very difficult to create without the program. Each graphic in the shp file has a unique id which is linked to the dbf (database) that holds the attributes related to each shape.
-
Petri, When importing a shp file you need to include the projection *.prj file to layout correctly the gis data on a planar surface. VW will save the projection data so if you need to export the data back to a shp file, it will be converted to lat/long coordinates. Without the prj file or projection data, VW cannot make the conversion as you have experienced.
-
The coordinates are the unique longitude and latitude of a point on the earth surface which is based on a particular spheroid used in that region. The latitude or northing is usually measured from the equator and the longitude or easting from the prime meridian (Greenwich, UK). Rather than changing the page location use a viewport on a sheet layer for printing. Note that when you create a viewport, it will also be off the page. All you need to do is change the center of the viewport in the object info to 0,0.

My 2 cents, The calculations are the same here or anywhere else with the only difference is the units used. The bending moment is always = force x length and the shear stress = force / cross sectional area. These are the 2 most important factors used to size a beam with deflection only considered for aesthetics. Once you calculate the moment and shear, you can choose the structural type needed to hold the load whether is wood, steel or concrete.

Wishes for VW 2011
Miguel Barrera replied to Ozzie's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Normally the legend and symbols will be the same size on each sheet layer. But if your symbols are drawn to a scale for use in design layers (1:480 in my case), you cannot use the same symbol in a sheet layer which has a 1:1 scale. You can create a 1:1 legend symbol as you suggested but will need to convert the symbols to group and scale them to 1:1. Then if you change a symbol, you will need to update the legend by converting and scaling the symbol again. By using a VP, you can edit the legend in the design layer without converting or scaling and changes appear immediately on each sheet layer. -

This will not work if the legend contains symbols which are scale dependent. By using a VP, you can scale the symbols in the legend to a desired size. -

Why the need to crop the legend? The VP will adjust to the boundaries of the legend if left uncropped. If you make any changes to the design layer, the VP will also adjust but I do not remember off hand if you need to click on "update" to show the changes. -
The various parts of the DTM belong to a class. Try changing the pen color to the same fill color or assign a 0 thickness to the pen width of the 3D class.

If you want to save time writing to a text file, set a document the way you want to code it in your script (add objects, classes, etc.) and use Export->Vectorscript to save the resulting code to a text file. Look for the object creation section and then copy relevant code into your script.

For polygons it would be a 2-D Path Object. An example is at the bottom of the page Vectorscript examples

Why do you need the Frame3D object to place another pio? Could the framing object position itself? Can the objects update themselves if there is a change? You could also assign all framing members to a class and then search for the class to get a report. As I remember, this is how I got the report in the WallFramer app.

DelObject(layHdl: HANDLE);

It depends what you mean by complex. The advantage of the SDK is that you can call OS functions, create custom option toolbar, handle other events not available in VS, etc. I would start with VS and if you need a more custom solution, migrate to the SDK since the same VW functions are available to both, VS and the SDK.

The easiest way to do parallel and perpendicular lines is by using vector geometry and functions for these operations are under Math-Vectors
