  1. Hi Russ,

I was hoping you could help me please?

I have received a file format that I cannot import or convert to use/import into Vectorworks.

On the forum I saw you work with MAX? is this correct?

The file format is '.mat' and holds a library of textures whereas I only need one of them to be converted to a jpg and C4D file.

Would you know where I can find someone online or even maybe yourself to convert it?
    Cheers, Grethe

Ok Grethe. Good luck with it.

I do have some gigantic textures if you're doing up-close work. I rarely use RW, but instead use 3ds max and Vray as you get a photo-real result. There's about a 3 year learning curve on that though!!

Happy to help if you need it.

All the best, from the very rainy medival village of Alfriston! :)

      Hi Grethe.

I got confused, as the file was in fact called tempered glass... although it contained 50+ materials... oops

The same applies however, that all it would be is reference a jpg, which it doesn't sound like you have.

I use vray materials website, as i use vray. It's very handy because the jpgs are included in the zip files too. Just what you need for RW/VW

RW comes with the huge (and very good) arroyway collection as standard. you might need to download them by going to help-> download ontent in VW, but once you have them, they're so easy to apply

      Good luck

      Hi Grethe,

That's right. The .mat file contained about 50 materials, and everything is referenced. at only 800kb there's no room to house the jpg files themselves.

In this instance, the glass did not require any maps, so it's known as a parametric or procedural material. When they use jpgs they're known as texture maps.

I initially thought you were trying to match another render, but if you're just recreating a scene in VW then your best bet would be to go into the resource browser, and if you have a recent version, you should be able to search for glass or similar, then simply drag and drop the renderworkd texture from the resource browser to the object in question. You can check it's been applied by viewing in OpenGL and checking the transparency in there.

The RW textures are optimised for RW so that should be your first try. It's quite a comprehensive library and you'll find concrete and metal also.

Good luck. Drop me a line if you have any problems

      Hi Grethe.

Just as I thought, it's a collection of numbers in the box.

All values are in R,G,B or Greyscale.

      Diffuse is: 208,250c225

      Reflect is: 211

      Rglossiness: 1 (100%)

      Refract: 243

      Rgloss: 1

      IOR: 1.52

      Exit/Fog colour: 48,66,44

No other maps at all. No bumps or anything!!

I hope this helps. The VW shaders don't use all of these details, but hopefully you'll get something quite close.

      All the best

      Russ

      Hi Grethe

While .mat files holds all the digits that you put in the various boxes, it doesn't contain the actual jpg, or tiff images.

They'll still be referenced in the file though and you'll need to have them.

With regards to porting them over, that's not truly possible due to how the shaders work. Send it on over and I'll have a look, but I might need to give you a list of numbers to put back in the boxes in the material/shader file

      Russ
