  1. I'm trying to draw a curved roof of a hangar in 3D. I'm finding the 2D curve is smooth and rounded, but when I try to extrude, it flattens out the top of the curve significantly. I've attached a screenshot. Is there a way to make the much more curved in 3d?SCRSHT76.thumb.jpg.07254f837435d8c73cbb744f62e53250.jpg

  2. Exactly it, thanks!

Of course now I'm curious how I managed to turn that off considering the steps I needed to go through to turn it on....unless somehow the hotkeys were still active....

either way that's what I needed thank you Pat!

  3. Somehow I did something, and now the flyover tool will only rotate the active layer. It's not doing that on any of my other 3D drawings I have open, so it's unique to that particular file. I can't find any settings for flyover to toggle between all layers and active.

I feel like this is one of those silly settings that accidentally got activated but I'm at my wits end how to correct it.

    I appreciate your help

  4. Hi,

I'm looking for a way to lock in the location of the "scale" info and have it automatically update as soon as I change the scale of the viewport.

Ideally it's in the title block. But so far I've found that if I add it to the title block, I have to manually go into the title block settings and hit refresh for it to adjust to the view port.

I often use the drawing stamp tool in the annotations of the viewport and that automatically updates, which is great. But everytime I re-size the view port I have to go into the Annotations and move the scale to a location on the sheet where I want it.

I'd love a way to combine both: have the scale information locked into position in my title block, or somewhere on the sheet honestly, and have it automatically update every time. The old "set it/forget it" style.

    Thanks

  5. Hi,

I'm finding if I export to PDF on single pages, I can rasterize or get a smaller PDF size, but I when I Publish, it's 10 times the file size.

Is there a way to adjust the output settings for the publish function? I often have a deck of 20 or so pages, so being able to just publish once is preferable, but the pdf file sizes aren't manageable. Exporting 1 page at a time will be very time consuming.

    thanks

  6. @Jesse Cogswell damn thanks for putting in that time. Really interesting. I'm going to do some digging, but I'm definitely in need of some tips on getting files sizes done on larger projects. I'm getting the old pinwheel of death just drawing a circle and putting a number inside it....I know some of this is just the size of the the program, it's beast of a program....but I also am certain I'm missing some good opportunities to lower files size.s

Thanks for all the replies everyone, very helpful.

  7. I'm trying a few different techniques to keep my file sizes smaller, so VWX doesn't eat up my RAM and bog down my machine.

2021 MacBook Pr: Apple M1 Max, 64GB Memory

Reference Files: I've got a large event site with several areas, I thought I'd keep each area as a separate file and have them all reference into a Master File, which I'd use to make sheet layers, etc. but I'm not sure that this hasn't had the opposite affect and it's working even harder.

Document Scale: Does this affect file sizes? I generally default to 1/4" (1:96) but again I'm wondering if a different scale would be beneficial, or if it's irrelevant.

Would love some thoughts on the above.

  8. It seems like this task is what slows done the functionality on vectorworks, and I suspect it's because this functional initiates after any task, even tasks that have no effect on graphics. Example: when I change the Drawing Number in the object info pallette, that's not affecting graphics, and yet I see the caching graphics bar upload before I'm able to change the number 1 to number 2...or re-naming a sheet layer, or restacking sheets...many text based tasks for some reason also gets the caching graphics/graphic re-fresh. Even simple tasks like drawing a 2D line or 2D square and the entire drawings grahics refresh.....

Anyway, just a suggestion as updates are being worked on.

  9. Hi,

I'm working with Project Files in Vectorworks 2023, and we've got the main project file on a dropbox folder.

I'm finding that every time I do a "Save and Commit" that Vectorworks crashing immediately.

Not sure if this is a glitch with the new version, or if there's something I can change, but obviously I would like that to stop.

    thanks for your help.

  10. Hi,

I've found that when I extrude curves they turn it a series of connected straight lines. Is there a way for me to extrude it as a pure curve, or to adjust settings (like in sketchup) to create more points on the curve to increase the number of straight lines to more match the 2d curve?

You can see quickly on the screen shot the original 2D curve, and then the extruded version with a straight edge at the top of the curve.

  11. I like how I can customize the dimension tool with arrows or lines, line thicknesses, and other visual elements.

However I find myself more often needing different colors and different levels of precision in my dimensions tools. Sometimes I need it to be precise to 1/8" or 1/16", and other times I need it to round to the inch.

I know I can change it individually, or select a few and manually change, but I'd love to know if there was a way to create a Dimension Tool style so one click immediately adjusts the color and precision.

  12. When I start a new file, I have a neutral door and neutral wall style. It's the default from vectorworks. Super easy to use....I draw a wall and I can easily adjust heights and thicknesses. I can pull a door and it's simple, I can change widths, number of doors etc. Quick and easy.

however as soon as I change the style of a wall or door, I'm now trapped into the style libraries. I can't just convert to unstyled and go back to where I was. and I can't find any style listed in the libraries that is what I started with.

if I convert to unstyled, it still keeps all the components, and I have to spend more time deleting and removing them.

Does anyone know what the neutral default style is for doors and windows, and how I quickly get back to that?

  13. Heya,

I'm often working on several projects at once, or needed to refer back and forth to different vwx files during a session. I have auto save set up every 10 minutes-learned this the hard way year ago that it need to be very frequent.

However I still find I'll perform a function and the pinwheel of death arrive. So far my only option is to eventually force quit the entire vectorworks program and lose the data on a bunch of files.

I've no idea how complicated the coding would be, but it would be an amazing feature for Vectorworks to create an internal force quit- rather than using the computer to end the program, but being able to make vectorworks stop the last command, without closing the program. If I can stop the function (the render, hiddne lines, moving large objects etc) and then save all my files before a re-start, that would be amazing.

Internal Force Quit- force quitting a function rather than an entire program.

    Hi,

2022 has this bug I've found that is killing my effeciency. Every time I zoom in or out in the design layer, items disappear and I have to wait a few seconds for them to re-appear. This happens on every vectorworks file (not just the example shown). This problem has occured on the 2018 Macbook pro, and the latest 2020 macbook pro. So multiple files and multiple computers are creating the same issue. How do I reseolve this? this problem will add hours to my week and I'll go insane.

I've attached a second file, with just (3) 2d shapes. It's not as bad but still there.

  15. Hi,

I've been frustrated in the past with Apple products and vectorworks being cumbersome. Seems like every new VWX upgrades gets slower and slower.

I have recently purchased the 2021 Macbook Pro 16 inch. 64 GB memeory, Apple M1 Max chip, OS Monterey. I've also updated to Vectorworks 2022.

On that computer, when I open a vwx file in Vectorworks 2021, go to a sheet layer, and attempt to change the crop size, it's slow but will eventually work. When I open the same file, on the same computer, to the same sheet layer in Vectorworks 2022, I've had the program crash twice attempting to change the crop size. The 3rd time it was significantly slower than on VWX 2021.

I've also notice that the graphics are much slower to load on Vectorworks 2022. This is true on both my old laptop (Macbook Pro 2018) and the new macbook pro. It's better on the new macbook pro, but graphics are still much slower than VWX 2021

  17. @Pat Stanford, is there someone I can contact to review the plans attached above? I'm still having painfully slow program running on my laptop with vectorworks. Would love to know if there are issues on my files that are corrupt that are causing the issues....but I'm constantly having deadlines that are hard to meet because I can't quickly resize the crop of the viewport, or move a viewport....as well as other issues dragging down the program.

  18. Hi, VWX is running incredibly slow on my mac. Unacceptably slow. I'm hoping there's something I'm either doing wrong, or a symbol or file that is corrupt perhaps....

Attached is a video of the 2 minutes it took me to move and resize the crop on a sheet layer. Also attached are video files showing how slow it is moving a chair in a group, and changing the class type inside a door symbol.

This problem is not unique to this file. It happens on all of them. It's killing me.

Here's a link to the file from the video:

    Macbook Pro-2018

    2.9 GHX Intel Core i9

    Radeo Pro 560X 4 GB

INtel UHD Graphics 630 1536 mb

I've encountered multiple professionals in the entertainment industry who have found issues with vectorworks struggling to use multi-core systems on macs....that the program throttles the speed because it can only work on 1 core and drags the system down. I'm hoping that's not the case here, and that there is something that I'm doing wrong.

Been an issue pretty much since I've had 2020. Never encountered this before on my 2014 mac, or any earlier version of vectorworks.

Obvioulsly the speeds in this video are unacceptable and killing my proficiency.

As I said, hoping this is user error easily fixed.

    Thanks for you help.

  19. @Jeremy Best I tried the resetting process and the only real change was on startup up I got an error on the Vision Library. Crashes were probably a bit less. Yesterday I have done a clean delete and re-loaded the program and I will let you know about crashes. I am still finding the program to be incredibly slow. Took me 5 minutes to arrange 10 chairs around a table. Every time I hit "shift+arrow" I'd get a pinwheel. But I suspect that issue is more related to vectorworks and macs no longer playing well together.

  20. Hi,

For some reason I find that my files suddenly defaults for the text to be black fill. I've gone through every class to make sure no class has a default of a black fill. I've reviewed all the text stiles to ensure none of them have a black fill. when I click the text icon in the Basic tool palette, I have the fill as white. But as soon as my mouse clicks on the design layer to start typing, the fill changes to black, with the class error. I cannot find any location to change this default. As you can imagine this is incredibly frustrating.

EDIT: As I started playing around, I found that the "unsytled" converts to a white fill, but all the other styled texts, (both custom and default vectorworks styles) all default to black fill. I added a quick video of some of the steps if that helps.

I'm hoping this is a simple fix and just a silly user error.

  21. I was using VWX up to 2019 on my 2015 MBP 16gb, and it was fine running that, sketchup, excel, email, lots of programs running. I bought the 2018 32GB i9 processor MBP a year ago and it's been choking, crashing, slogging....for any other pogram it's lighting fast. But for Vectorworks it gets super slow. I have to restart the computer multiple times a day compared to once a week or so for the 2015. I'm literally looking for a replacement laptop, trying to guage if I should pick up a 2016 or even earlier.

From what I can tell VWX's legacy infrastructure is too bloated and drags on the Mac multi-core system....

I do love Mac, but maybe going back to PC is worth it.
