Now in its third year, AIAS members were asked to share their sketches and renderings to highlight their studio work and to provide inspiration for those looking to enhance their own skills. This competition was open to all years and skill sets.

“The jury had a tough time deliberating with the tremendous entries this time around,” said AIAS President Sarah Curry. “The caliber of applicants improves every time, and we chose the selected winners based on their ambition, ability and artistry. Each of the contestants who placed was able to convey the emotion and atmosphere of the project and site through a mastery of their craft.”

2019 In Studio Render/Sketch competition winners were as follows:

First place and winner of $300: Alex Geisen of Washington State University

Second place and winner of $200: Deiland Slaughter of Fairmont State University

Third place and winner of $100: Lauren Wertz of Auburn University

“As part of the submission process, AIAS members had to tag Vectorworks’ Instagram handle when they uploaded their designs, and it was phenomenal to witness all of the inspiring and creative design submissions from students,” said Alice Lowy, marketing programs director at Vectorworks. “The fundamental mission for Vectorworks is enabling great design to occur. We’re grateful for our continued partnership with AIAS, and it’s wonderful to see great designs materializing with the future generation of architects.”

  3. Brooklyn, NY-based lighting and production design firm Gray Matter Visual Inc. (GMV) recently used the latest release of Vision 2019 software as a previsualization solution for Lighting Designer Rob Cangemi of Cangemi Design. Used specifically for the 2019 Telemundo Celebration event at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City for advertising clients and business partners, Vision, created by global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc., allowed GMV to properly previsualize, program and cue the show, which was produced by Ray Bloch Productions.

Due to the complex nature of the show and the limited time onsite, Cangemi reached out to GMV for in-studio pre-visualization. GMV combined the lighting plot and scenic drawings in Vectorworks Spotlight to build the combined 3D model before exporting to Vision.

GMV was also able to take advantage of the My Virtual Rig (MVR) support added in a recent Service Pack update to Vision 2019. MVR is part of the General Device Type Format (GDTF) initiative led by Vectorworks, MA Lighting and Robe Lighting that seeks to create a unified definition for the exchange of data for the operation of intelligent luminaires. According to GMV Staff Associate Charlie Winter: “We used MVR for the initial import of the lighting rig into Vision, as well as to manage subsequent plot and channeling updates. The support for unique fixture IDs helped make this process smooth.”

Lighting Designer Rob Cangemi and Lighting Programmer Hillary Knox spent two days at the GMV studio in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn, working with the in-house GrandMA2 onPC system connected to Vision. From this system, Cangemi and Knox were able to build the show file and work on cueing, including showing looks to their clients.

“The GMV team allowed us the time and space to develop our ideas with our clients before the chaos of our intensely tight onsite schedule hit us,” said Cangemi. “We came in so prepared and our long-time clients saw the difference. We knew it would be a plus having the previz time at the GMV studio, but what we didn't anticipate was just how invaluable it became, such that we never want to do this show again without it! The transition from previz to onsite was remarkably smooth thanks to the quality time that Charlie and the GMV staff took to set everything up, carefully adding our needed elements and filtering out the non-essentials.”

Cangemi and Knox were also able to utilize GMV’s mobile Vision system to continue cueing while on-site and keeping an eye on the load-in and any last-minute updates to the show.

“We use previsualization solutions on many of our own design projects,” said GMV Founder and Principal Designer Brendan Gray. “We took a renewed look at Vision with the 2019 release, and were pleased with what our testing showed. When Rob approached us about this show, I felt that Vision would be the right tool to use, and we were not disappointed. I’m looking forward to the continued development of the software.”

  16. The demands of the entertainment industry are constantly evolving, and access to state-of-the-art technology is more critical than ever. In response to this, global design and BIM software solutions provider Vectorworks, Inc. is pleased to announce that DWR Distribution has been appointed an official distributor for Vectorworks Spotlight, Braceworks and Vision software in South Africa.

“DWR has demonstrated a strong commitment to Vectorworks and has deep roots in the entertainment industry, and it was a natural progression to have them officially join the Vectorworks family as a distributor,” said Tara Grant, director of channel operations at Vectorworks. “As the demand for our solutions grows and Vectorworks continues to expand, we are looking for strong distribution partners like DWR to provide local support in markets around the world.”

Since 2013, DWR has sold software to the entertainment industry and offered extensive training at its office over the years. This new agreement will further benefit customers by allowing greater technical and sales support with direct access to the team at Vectorworks.

“It’s an honor to be able to distribute a brand like Vectorworks, and we are very excited about the partnership,” said Duncan Riley, owner of DWR Distribution. “We believe that the close collaboration between MA Lighting and Vectorworks, to assist lighting designers on workflow, will be a game changer. On DWR’s side, we have a passionate team supporting the brand. We see Vectorworks as a 360-degree entertainment design solution for the country, providing professionals and students with a tool that will make their lives easier.”

DWR’s Dylan Jones will manage all Vectorworks sales and support. “It’s exciting to be working directly with the Vectorworks team,” he said. “We are looking forward to providing educational and network licenses to the industry. The training Vectorworks provides their distributors has already helped us improve the quality of our technical support, and with direct access to their order process, we are now able to deliver licenses more quickly to our customers.”

  18. Global design and BIM software solutions provider Vectorworks, Inc. reveals its two can’t-miss keynotes during the 2018 Vectorworks Design Summit: Antoine Predock, architect at Antoine Predock Architect, and Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. Vectorworks invites professionals, educators and students in the AEC, landscape and entertainment industries to attend the fourth annual event, which will take place November 4 to 6, 2018 at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass in Phoenix, Ariz.

Led by Sarkar, the “Vectorworks CEO keynote” will take place on Monday, November 5 at 9 a.m. Sarkar will focus on the company’s strategic vision and direction regarding current trends and future technology. Additionally, attendees will get a closer look at the new technologies in the latest software version, Vectorworks 2019, from the research and development leaders that made them possible.

“Unlike our competition that develops products for a single industry, we have the advantage of being able to innovate across multiple industries and serve a broad array of designers. This gives us an advantage in that we can see and embrace innovations that they cannot,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “Year after year, the Vectorworks Design Summit is the best place to learn how Vectorworks has advanced and to get up and running with our latest technology.”

On Tuesday, November 6 at 9 a.m., Predock will deliver the second keynote, titled “Site Specificity and the Aura of Globalization.” His speech will educate attendees on how they must tune into the context of the people and vibe of a place and how the connection to those conditions can lead to unbelievable things in design. Predock will share his experience balancing the physical and digital sides of design. Predock will also talk about his wide-ranging projects, from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which is now featured on the Canadian ten dollar bill, to the Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), a College of Media and Communications, to the Luxe Lake Gateway and Art Center in Chengdu, China. A Vectorworks user for 25 years, Predock will explain how the software played a role in these projects.

In addition to these two inspiring keynotes, the conference will include 90+ industry sessions and workshops, one-on-one tech support, networking events and hands-on training. Multiple sessions will offer continuing education credits.

  22. The world’s leading business solutions review website, G2 Crowd, featured global design and BIM software developer Vectorworks, Inc. in its Spring 2018 Grid and Index reports.

The reports rank software based on unbiased and real-time reviews from verified users. Specifically, Vectorworks Architect was ranked second in the “Highest Rated” and “Easiest To Use” categories for Building Design and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. Scoring ahead of other BIM software programs, Architect received a 92 percent satisfaction score and an 8.5 usability score.

According to G2 Crowd, a product’s satisfaction and usability scores are calculated by a proprietary algorithm that factors in real-user satisfaction ratings from review data. Software buyers can compare products according to their satisfaction scores to streamline the buying process and quickly identify the best products based on the experiences of their peers.

“Rankings on G2 Crowd reports are based on data provided to us by real users,” said Michael Fauscette, chief research officer at G2 Crowd. “We are excited to share the achievements of the products ranked on our site because they represent the voice of the user and offer terrific insights to potential buyers around the world.”

As the architect’s BIM tool, Vectorworks Architect enables designers to tackle complex ideas in 2D and 3D, refine construction details, explore project’s energy efficiency and streamline costs.

“It is an honor to have Vectorworks Architect recognized by G2 Crowd, but this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our amazing users,” said Dan Monaghan, vice president of marketing at Vectorworks. “They are the ones who keep us motivated in our mission to offer the best BIM software for the AEC industry year after year.”
