Daniel, Thanks... I just tested it again on my Mac, and it works! I know the last time I tried, both VectorWorks Tech Support and I could not get it to work. I must have updated some part of my system so it now works. I found that exporting as a Photoshop file is a cleaner image than a JPEG.

If your having trouble achieving a resolution higher than 72 DPI using the "export image" command on a Mac, well that's because it's still a broken function. It was claimed to be fixed, but I guess no one really tested it. When I called to ask why I still couldn't get it to work, they were a bit surprised, but they did confirm it's still broken.

Roy,
Basically you draw the profile, then extrude it. Read the response I wrote about mitering a corner of moulding trim.
-
Mark,
In VectorWorks you could go to top view, draw a square with sides longer than the length of the miter, extrude the square longer then the height of the trim detail, rotate the square extrusion 45 degrees (or the correct miter angle), orient it over the end of the trim detail, switch to front view and orient the height over the trim detail's end, then use the subtract solids command to "cut" away the mitered end of the trim detail.
I draw a lot of complex moldings and I do them using Julian Carr's add on program called 3D Manager. It's not a perfect solution, but it will do something that VectorWorks can't: That is, extrude a complex profile along non-straight path.

Mark, I reiterate... performing an undo (Mac) on any action performed with the Reshape 2D Polygon tool causes the Reshape 2D Polygon tool to be deselected and the pointer arrow selected instead. If you can provide a good reason as to why this happens and to what benefit it is, then I can accept that this is a feature request. Otherwise, since no other tool functions this way on an undo command, I still contend that it's a bug.

Have you tried to export an image file at any resolution other than 72 DPI? Well, it doesn't work. It was suppose to be fixed in the 8.5.1 update, but it's not. The workaround is to increase the file size.

Michael,
Your article about reflective effects was extremely informative. I think an article about shadows would be helpful. I find shadowing useful to enhance the realism of a rendering and help differentiate adjoining surfaces of objects. Shadowing is most effective if it's subtle. I do a lot of exploded view illustrations. Since objects in these drawings are close to each other, applying shadows is more distracting than useful. With shadows turned on, there are too many hard shadows thrown from objects with an unobstructed line to the light source. You could help by explaining how to soften and "turn down" shadows to get more realistic results.

On the Mac side there is no way I've found to get anything usable to import into VectorWorks. All I've ever gotten imported is bit map images, nothing vector based.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

Add top, front, right, and left view buttons to the 2D info bar.
-
Imagine having a "New Window" command so changes made in say a front view in one window were instantly reflected in a 3D view in a second window!

Diehl Graphsoft,
Please fix the Reshape 2D Polygon tool so that an undo command does not change the tool selection from the Reshape 2D Polygon tool to the 2D pointer arrow section tool.

When copying an object and pasting that object into another drawing the data text ID is pasted if the info palette was on the data tab in the original drawing.
-
Add the ability to place sheets into a hierarchy like with classes.
-
Make the 2D cursor the default cursor when changing views and doing any operation in a view. As it is now, every time I change views (except top/plan), the cursor is the 3D cursor and I have to click the 2D cursor to do more work.
-
Mike, Do you work with classes and solid subtraction? Much of my work is curved shapes.

Too often VectorWorks files become corrupt. I think this happens when a file becomes complex beyond the available RAM and allocated RAM, and it does not take much complexity to achieve that state. Once this happens, strange things start occurring when ungrouping and viewing and hiding classes. The corruption usually manifests itself as a failed solid subtaction.
My question is: Is there a way to check for these corruptions and then fixed them without losing all my work time since the file's last uncorrupt back up?

I agree with all of your thoughts and would like to add a few.
1) Change the shader selection window. Have it open like a folder organized into material types with a preview window.
2) Provide a fast RenderWorks fast render option.
3) Improve the texture mapping dialog box. I use this dialog box a lot and I still don't know how it works! Everything about it is confusing, and often the preview does not display the texture.
4) Make transparent and reflective textures much easier to use. As it is now, making an object appear transparent requires very precise and therefore very limited light settings. Make it more real world. A transparent object is transparent if it's visible. Same goes for reflective materials. The lighting requirements are too sever. Reflective materials should have highlights too.
The best thing about RenderWorks now is that it has a lot of room for improvement.

1) Combine the VectorWorks and Document preferences into one window, tabbed if necessary.
2) Change the keyboard shortcut for zoom in to command-spacebar and for zoom out to option-command-spacebar. This would be consistent with most all other programs.

Try this: Draw two partially overlapping extruded rectangles in top/plan view. Do a solid subtraction or a solid addition of these two objects. Switch to front view and then ungroup the object you created. Notice the selection handles are not where they should be. To deal with this, switch to any other view and the handles will be correct again. I consider this a bug and I hope Diehl Graphsoft will fix it soon. It's really difficult to deal with this problem as a drawing gets more complex. Also, in complex drawing there's a tendency for the ungrouped solid subtractions to become corrupt if their ungrouped resulting in a "failed solid subtraction".

Thanks. That way it works fine.

I believe that the angle dimension tool is broken in version 8.5.1 for the Mac. I can place an angle dimension, but I can no longer grab the dimension text and move it in or out to shrink or grow the witness lines. This worked in previous versions. Now all that happens is I can move the text side to side. Could someone please confirm this problem?
hidden line rendering facets

I assume by your request that you are exporting your rendered hidden line file as EPS and importing into an illustration program. I do this a lot and I agree that having VectorWorks hide the facet lines would be a huge time saver. Also, improving the accuracy of VectorWorks EPS export would speed up the clean up required in the illustration program.
