one glossary term in the software business that you need to learn is "early implementer"

it applies to geeks that have to beta test and/or be the first to try/use software right out of the gate

as with any software, early versions are always buggy (nature of the business)

if you can not deal with the process of reporting bugs, then maybe sit back; relax and wait for later releases.

expecting that version x.0.0 of any software to be perfect is nothing but a pipe dream

    (-:

  2. in the classes and layers

you have the options of show/snap/modify others

you can select anything with this option

and the class and layer show up in the OI palette

use the Navigation Palette to easily access the options

  3. it turns out that Intellipoint 6.0 is the culprit

so check which version your mouse driver is running

    if it 6.0

    2 methods for a fix

if you have intellipoint 5.0 then delete installation of version 6 and reinstall 5.0

otherwise you can do the following

    Ctlr-alt-del opens task manager

select Process tab and find ipoint.exe

    end the process

for a permanent disable during reboot

you need to run msconfig (under Start button)

under startup tab find intellipoint and deselect

this has worked on 3 computers with intellipoint 6.0 and it fixed the problem

  4. cbaarch does have an architectural practice and much more than basic knowledge when it comes to VW

we have been very productive in VW in short order but we have not fully used the full capabilities of the software because it does not work with our work flow methodology.

so stating again,VW has very good and very extensive sets of tools that can be used for single practioners to large groups of users. To get the most dollar value from the program training is essential just like any other software.

and as for the slashes in a window that is so a handdrafting method (I have direct knowledge having hand drafted for 10 years) you need to find new methodology to show windows - the designers prefer gradients/renderings whereas the techies prefer patterns/hatches.

as for glazing not showing up on a job site; obviously nobody specified the glazing with such information as clear or tinted (what percent) or mirrored with info on which side of the lite the mirror needs to be on and if it is single or double glazed with or without argon gas with/without low E coating

dashes on a window in an elevation gives nothing about the latter or if the lite is a spandrel panel with a whole new set of specs such as tempered or laminated, the insulation value with a full galvanozed pan or a foil backing...................we do window types for such and exercise and then reference the windows to a specifications manual.

    AND

shop drawings were obviously not submitted to the architect/designer for review and approval before the order was placed if glazing was missing. Needless to say the line of communication was broken between the contractor and the architect

    cheers

    Conrad

  5. I find it really intesting that VW gets dimissed as not being able to do a feature when "grenmeadow and we" do not seem to have spent a lot of time to learn how do what the advertised features are capable of doing

there is also no mention in greenmeadows' posting of where he is coming from and, what they consider to be traditional drafting convention (maybe autocad???)

if greenmeadows and his band had looked into some training they would have found out that in VW:

    drawing is mostly done on a design layer at a predetermined scale in a first file;

that information can then be layed out for printing on a sheet (always 1:1 scale) using viewports (which can be scaled and controlled via layers and classes and other such as view)

a second file can then be referenced into the first file using

WGR - (workgroup references) and can be inserted in a sheets or new sheet in the same file.

the VP's can also be annotated using the annotations feature of a VP - the VP can be scaled and the Advanced properties can control line weights etc.. useful when doing detailed drawings.

and WGR can be linked via LayerLink to create a drawing from multiple sources

so do not dismiss VW until you learn all the features that usually gets you where you need to be in the world of CAD.

VW is a program rich with features that takes years to learn if you want to learn it all. even after 10 years - I learned a feature of a tool which I had not yet fully explored.

so if you have specific details about somethigng you tried

we may try and help - but if you are only going to complain about generalities you will be on your own and you will have wasted your money on VW

    my 2 cents

  6. We use the following:

a1.x series for site plan and zoning building info

    a2.x series for floor plans

    a3.x for elevations

a4.x for building sections and and details

    a5.x for assemblies and schedules

    a6.x for interior elevations

for batch printing to pdf on winxp paltform

we then use 11 21 etc

and then make a book using acrobat (we have version8)

we do a layout of all the sheets we will need before we start our working drawings.

this system is really good when you did not produce the drawings

and you want to find info when talking to contractors

  7. From another perspective:

I am working on fixing a set of working drawings that were started by a draftman by hand. Yes there are still people out there doing hand drawings.

There is a market for a good 2D cad program; which in our case makes us quite a good income. We seldom use 3D; but we push the limits of presentation using all the 2D CAD tools available in VW

to dimiss 2D CAD and conclude that it is on the way out is only 1 opinion that is not shared by this user.

So for NNA to spend time improving 2D tools is a market that for the time being will, more likely than not, sell new seats and upgrades.

  8. I started a new project today with an existing vw12 - working in 2D

Since I want to keep the class and layer structure

I deleted all previous info and purged everything other than classes and layers

I started with a footings and foundations using

styled wall; call out tool; text; gridlines; created groups and symbols

I then duplicated some info for the main floor plan

and THEN I inserted a window from the windows tool

as soom as the window was inserted the flickering started and has became really annoying as windows and doors where added

so the PIO seems to be the culprit

winxppro - 2 LCD monitors on ASUS Nivia GeForce 5400

  9. walls styles are basically walls that have a name rather then not.

    they both can have components

the styles walls show up in the drop down menu

they NNA walls are stored in the Libraries Folder

custom walls are stored in the document (unless copied to the default mcd drawing in the library)

  10. you are probably looking for specs of the CPU

Intel Dual Core min 3 gHz

winxp will only uses 3.5 gig of RAM - 2 should be enough unless you do a lot of rendering then 4 gigs or 2 x 2 gig paired RAM

video card that will handle 2 monitors using DVI connectors

    with min 512K RAM

hard drive has large as you can afford

winxp pro instead of Vista if you have existing peripherals

    DVD read/write

and 2 monitors: 17" are good deals and gives you good screen space.

the above did a rendering in about 3 hours.

instead of 6 hours on a single core 3.0ghz - 2 megs of RAM

    hope this helps
