  1. Hi scottmoore. I tried this - but to no avail. Its really odd - the lights can line-up perfectly in the Definition Layer - but spin around to right angles in the DLVPs on the Model layer. Some symbols dont do this and behave exactly as you expect. No amount of meddling in the Definition Layer seems to fix it. Would love to know why this is. Alternatively - is there another way to do this - for LX plot AND renders without doubling-up on lighting symbols?

  3. Hi there Im having issues when trying to attach LED striplights to vertical trusses. When activating the model layer (which VW creates to show vertical trusses/booms in a 3D space) - I cant get the LED strips to show as being rigged vertically on the truss - they default to being at right angles to the truss. When I alter the "Set 3D Orientation" settings in the OIP - I still cant get them to rig vertically on the vertical truss. I can do this in the Definition Layer - no problems. But, I want to be able to show these in a Plan View w/ labels for the LX Plot and a 3D View for renders. Heres my process: Draw in a truss using the Spotlight truss tool Convert to Hanging Position Insert the lighting symbol (LED Strip) onto the Hanging Position, ensuring its inserted on the same layer and that it snaps to the position Select both lighting symbol & truss, then execute the Plot & Model View command Select the "Vertical" checkbox and create a new Definition & Model Layers After I execute the command, when I show ONLY the Model Layer - the truss is shown in vertical orientation but the LED strips are attached at right-angles to the truss. In the Definition layer, when viewing via an isometric view - the LED strip shows as being positioned in the same direction as the truss. I cant seem to correct this using the lighting symbols "Set 3D Orientation" settings. Can anyone shed some light on this? Plot & Model View always seems clunky to me - but I can at least get it to work for conventional fittings. Is there a simpler work-around to show the LX plot AND 3D renders without doubling-up lighting symbols? Cheers
  4. Hi All For my section style, I prefer to use a diagonal hatch that is set in the section style class. The only problem is, when printed - the diagonal lines are too close to each other. Ive tried to use the Attribute Mapping tool in my section viewports - but to no avail. Whats the best way to manually alter the hatch, without having to find another hatch all together?
  5. Hi there Ive recently moved to running VW on Win 10 - in order to be able to afford a PC with decent rendering capabilities - Im struggling with the way Win 10 shows VW menu and window text. The default text size is just too small. Adjusting the Make Text Bigger slider scales menu text to an acceptable size, but not other text. Adjusting the Custom Scaling setting makes the text bigger - but makes the VW graphics and tool icons blurry. I read that Win 10 has had scaling issues - but this was a few years ago - and Im no expert. The said Make Text Bigger setting fixes the text scaling issue in other apps, just not VW. Im running a pair of HP LA 2306x 1920x1080 monitors at the native res. Any help here would be much appreciated.

  8. Hi All Im wanting to create a symbol legend with non-spotlight symbols - but want them shown like they are shown using the Spotlight Instrument Summary tool. Is there a way of doing this so that it automatically updates? Cheers

  11. Hi there A question to anyone running VW on Win 10. Ive used VW on OSX for the last 8 years and have just had a win PC made for rendering as my long suffering macbook was struggling with renders. So far so good - but struggling a little with the way win 10 looks and feels. Can anyone suggest any win 10 tweaks to make it look better? Ive experimented a little making the font bigger and with the high-contrast settings with some success. Not sure I want to start downloaded OSX skin packs. Cheers Symo

  15. Hi there Is there an easy way to make the lens of a light symbol glow when emitting light? My renders are looking a little odd - when the lights are lighting objects and people correctly - but you cant see light coming out of them. Ive tried muliple render modes - but to no avail. Cheers
  16. Hi Herbie I do hidden line renders probably once a week and a full realistic render (with renderworks) once every couple of weeks. I use vectorworks with spotlight everyday, however. Cheers
  17. Hi All Im about to invest in a new VW workstation as my poor Macbook Pro is getting hammered with renders. It regularly hangs when doing section viewport hidden-line renders, for starters. I read this excellent post on benchmarking different setups: Im keen to stay with Mac OS - despite having to pay a bit more for it. The rig that ticked all my boxes was a 27" iMac Pro - but its a bit out of my price range. So, Im looking very seriously at a Mac Mini setup: 3.2Ghz 6-core Intel Core i7 32GB of 2666MHZ DDR4 RAM 512GB SSD Radeon Pro WX 9100 GPU - 16GB Razer Core X Thunderbolt 3 External GPU enclosure I was wanting to go to an 8 core GPU - but the Mac Mini scored very well in the benchmark test. Does anyone for-see any issues going with an eGPU (external graphics card) - with the Mac Mini?? I work in the entertainment & presentation industry - and I do many renders for clients. I would also like to go down the Vision route at some point - so I need a setup that will cope with this. Cheers

Hi there Having issues when using the Plot & Model function in Spotlight - whereby I use a Definition Layer for each vertical truss (to show LX symbols in 2D viewports and to edit) then use the Model layer to show these vertical trusses in my Renders and Section Viewports. The issue Im having is that the lighting symbols on the vertical trusses arent pointing in the correct direction (Focus Point C in the attached plan). They show correctly in 3D views in the design layers - just not in the sheet layer viewports. In the attached file, go to the Saved View "Camera" to see the plan in a 3D view (with the symbols in the vertical trusses showing correctly) and then have a look at the "Front Section" Sheet Layer (where they point downwards).   22. Hi all I like to use the "plot & model view" command for showing vertical trusses with light fixtures in both lighting plots 3D renders. Problem is when I generate worksheets from the "create report" command, I get all the lighting instruments used in the "plot & model view" shown twice in the generated worksheets. Is there a work around for this? I like to use worksheets for entering light data info.
  23. Hi There Wanting to know if I can make everything default to the same line weight. Currently - when I import symbols (mostly lighting symbols in Spotlight) - the imported line weights can vary greatly. So without having the manually change the line weights in each symbol (really tedious) - the symbols look a mess on my sheet layer viewports - but cant tell until I print or publish the sheet layer. I like everything to be 0.18mm for printing. I see that I can scale line weights in the advanced viewport settings - but I want all line weights to be the same. Cheers Symon
