  1. I haven't yet worked out how to use worksheets for legends yet. I 'm interested in how others do this too as I have just been tidying my own system.

I have a set of legend symbols in my symbol library. I insert the legends into viewport annotations and it seems to work pretty well. The legend symbols usually only need a little bit of tweaking to suit different projects.

i typically use "by class" attributes for pretty much everything. So with my wall/slab style components set to "by class", in my legends I can just use a rectangle to represent the slab or wall (the same width of the wall or slab) and set it to the slab or wall component class with attributes also set to "by class".

I prefer placing my legend symbols in the viewport annotations rather than on design layers. This means less viewports plus being in the annotation layer the legends can be at 1:1 scale (I.e scaled by the viewport to the same size as the design layer objects ). Hatches will be the same scale and also viewport class overrides will effect both annotation and viewport objects the same.

As the legends are typically symbols they can be placed on different sheets if required and when edited all update the same.

Gets a bit tricky if I have different floor plans or sections at different viewport scales but typically all my floor plans and sections are the same scale (1:50 or 1:25).

  2. For multiple storey projects like this I sometimes create a design layer called "reference" which is at the top of the stacking order. In this I place the coloumns and grids so they are always visible in top/plan view. Also good for datum markers, section reference lines etc.

Another technique is to have the columns only go one floor but turn them into a symbol that you can also have instances of on the other floor levels.

I have a related issue perhaps someone can help with.

i sometimes have beams or lintels occupying the same 3D space as floors or walls. However when I create a 3D section viewport the beams or lintels are concealed by the wall or floor objects. Send to front doesn't work. Any suggestions?

  3. I am finding a couple of things frustrating with space labels. I have a file with about 100 rooms so about 100 spaces objects. To set them all to have multiple labels I have to go through the settings dialogue of each one individually to turn on "use mulitple space labels" as this is not an option that can be put on the OIP.

Similarly setting the class of the leader lines is not an option that can be put on the OIP so again I have to got througheach one individually.

Note that neither one of these items comes up on@Pat Stanford's otherwise great script for list all PIO record fields. So these options can't be globally edited through a worksheet either.

This is making the use of the labels quote tedious for me on this project.

I agree that a complete overhaul of the callout and notes legend tool should be a priority for the next release. It's one of the more limited and least user-friendly aspects of the software. Considering how essentially notes are for documentation, this is really an enormous oversight. If a complete overhaul is not in the works, improving the current tool in the following ways would definitely help a lot:

    1. allow categorical tags to be applied to notes. For example, I would tag many notes with their appropriate CSI category.
    2. provide search bar in the notes manager, allowing notes to be filtered by text or tag
    3. allow a single keynote legend to be placed on multiple sheets
    4. allow a single note to be applied to multiple legends.
    5. allow worksheets to be created from notes database.

    Thanks,

    mg

    Agree with this list completely.

For 1. I use the CSI number as a prefix to a keynote callout and place it into the same numbered legend effectively sorting keynotes into CSI numbered legends.

For 2. It would be great to have a "find a callout" command in the keynote legend dialogue box. Sometimes I want to remove a callout from a legend but this can only be removed by deleting the callout. So I have to go through the whole file searching through my many callouts until I find the offending one to delete.

For 5. Also linking callouts and worksheets would be a fantastic so that worksheets could access a keynote database and/or callouts in a file.

Can I add an additional item to this list?

    6. List Keynote legends in the OIP alphabetically and/or nummerically.

When choosing which Keynote legend to place a callout in the object info palette it would be great if the legends listed alphabetically and/or numerically (using sheet numbers). I use a lot of Keynote legends and finding the right legend to place the callout in a long list of seemingly randomly listed legends is annoying.

One thing I find when going thru the wishlists and just the forum in general is that we just see the usual faces and there are certainly lots of new ones (great) but considering there are technically over 24,000 members we don't see big numbers on the wishlist items.  By taking a cursory glance at the items in the wishlist

     Stair Tool Rehab for 2020

has garnered the most votes at 20.  Just 20.  That's 0.08% of the total forum population.  How can we get more people who are on the forum to "get out and vote"?  Maybe some kind of blinking banner that says "Go to the wishlist and vote today"? or send out a general email to all members encouraging them to engage the forum more?

Any thoughts fellow forum members?  @JimWand company?  Surely there are many others out there that have wishes for VW.

I'd guess that the majority of people who use the forum are wanting quick answers to questions and are not going to want to spend time looking at a Wishlist.

also the Wishlist is not that easy to find.

  6. When my VW crashes I go to my last backup and often find that the backup was created the same time as the crash. Is the backup causing the crash?

Fortunately this doesn't happen so often as to be a major problem. Interested to know if anyone else experiencing this. At the moment I have set backups for every 5 minutes.

  7. I have done this by making my wall style attributes set to "by class" then using design layer viewports, one for the floor above and one for the floor below. I then use class overrides to change the line type of the wall class in the design layer viewports.

For the sake of drawing tidiness I put the DLVP's on their own design layers but you could put them on dedicated classes instead.

I then have a sheet layer viewport for my framing plan with the DLVP design layers (or classes) visible. If you do this you need to make sure these DLVP class overrides are maintained in the SLVP. There is a checkbox at the bottom of the SLVP classes edit window.

This is a good way to get different visibilities or graphic attributes for objects on the same class but different design layers.

    hope that is useful

    cheers

  8. Vectorworks allows you to enter a description of a layer or class in the edit layer/class dialogue. This from VW Help about class descriptions (the same applies to layer descriptions):

"The description displays as a screen tip when you position the cursor over the class name in the Organization dialog box, Navigation palette, or (on Mac only) the Classes list from the View bar. Descriptions also display in the New Classdialog box, so that you can see descriptions of classes before you import them".

That is great however it seems to fall down when a new classes or layer is created by duplicating an extg one. I often duplicate classes or layers so that the new class/layer has the same attributes & viewport visibilites as the original. Unfortunately it also duplicates the class/layer descriptions which may then also not apply to the use of the new class/layer.

I want to easily be able to manage these descriptions in my files however the descriptions aren't listed in the organisation dialogue box. Is there a simple script out there somewhere that can create a worksheet that lists the name and descriptions of classes and layers in a file? In addition it would ideally be possible to edit the descriptions straight from the worksheet.

  9. If you right click on a viewport and select "edit" from the context menu you will get a window open up where you can add the refernece crop object. At the bottom of this same window you can also choose what action double-clicking on a viewport will do.

    2. Create all the symbols you need and put them in that template or in a library file containing the same classes as the template.

    4. Have all parts of the symbol in the proper classes that you want to use.

Further to Art V's suggestion I have created a new file called a symbol library to contain all the symbols commonly used across our office. The file will be kept in a workgroup favourites folder and will be accessible by all office users so they can quickly import symbols for use in their projects.

To get it started I have gone through a bunch of my recent projects and imported lots of symbols from those project files into the library file. Unfortunately this also drags any classes contained within the symbol into the library file. I now have a file with lots of random and out of date classes that don't conform to my class naming system. I need to get rid of these classes so they don't go on to further "infect" future projects that library symbols might be imported into.

Is there someway I can quickly get rid of these classes in the library file without changing the appearance of the symbols? I.e. Remove "by class" settings from symbol subobjects then delete the unwanted classes so that the subobjects go on the "none" class but still look the same.

i know I can do this one symbol at a time but there are hundreds of symbols...

As I understand it the "set default symbol class" command as mentioned by Matt Panzer only sets the class that symbols are inserted into not the actual class of objects inside symbols.

If there is no quick way to sort all these symbols then is there an efficient way to find out which symbols contain the unwanted classes? Most of the symbol subobjects will already be on the "none" class so it may not be too big a deal to sort the symbols individually if I can quickly find out exactly which symbols contain unwanted classes.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.  Thanks
