  1. All I hear about about are bugs and crashes in 9.XX and it is slower unless you do hardware upgrades... Spltting the product into modules is a good "marketing" approach... However, what we really need is a program that is RELIABLE and is supported by many printers, platforms and operating systems.
  2. try this... select class option ACTIVE only... Select DIMENSION from the class drop down... you should see ONLY the dimensions on that layer. Go into the Object Info palette where you can change the parmenter for dimensions. All dimesions on that layer will change to the "attributes/paramenters" you select. Do this for each layer by selecting the layers from the later drop down. You could also make ALL layer visible and do this in one action.
  3. Sometimes the combined object disappers.. Usually combing arcs...
  4. Is the a way to release the currently selected tool ASIDE from clicking on "nothing" or clicking on a new tool? Is the a keystroke... like ESCAPE key? Can this be set up easily? VW 8.52...
  5. I decided to test the printer and the plotter in the office regarding their output re line weights. I am using VW 8.52 on Win 2000, with a ricoh network printer/copier and a Xerox 8825 plotter. What I did was make 8 line in 4 different colors, Black, Red, Grey, Green and differnt line wights from 1 to 40. Each set was drawn as vertical and horizontal lines. I set the out to to print as black for the Xerox. the Ricoh has no setting. The Ricoh output in general is FAR superior and renders gray fills pretty acurately. The Xerox never did a very good jon with fills... The line weight test revealed that horizontal and vertical lines DO NOT PLOT/PRINT the same. And the coolors were confusing too. Some of the finest lines appear DARKER (heavier) than the middle wright lines. The horizontal lines appeared correct and the vertical lines were not correct? Why is the happening and how can I get lines to appear accurately whether drawn horizontall or vertically.. Perhaps diagonal lines will reveal more whackiness. I expect that I will hear that this is a Xerox driver problem.... We will test ACAD 2000 and 14 with the same plotter/printer next week... If ACAD does not produce similiar results... I would conclude that it is a VectorWorks problem... break.... more to follow
  6. The tool which has drawing titles and north arrow misbehaves when you send one of these obkects to a new later. It often maintains its former layer attributes... which are out of scale for the new layer they appear on. To get these obkects to appear correctly, the text etc... you need to change the infor in the object palette. For example the scale continues to indicate the scale of the layer the Drawing Title was created on ... until you change some of its attributesd on the new lawer. Also when you send text to a new layer.. sometimes.. or maybe always it has no text size when you select the text. It seems to be a unsized text.. but when you select a size for it.. it accepts the new size... What gives here>
  7. I notice when I am cutting and pasting a wall with windows and doors in it.. or an entire plane etc... all the windows and doors in the wall appear wacked out. I have to select each one and uncheck and check the USE WALL DEPTH in the object info palette. They then pop back into the wall thickness as they were. This is on 8.52. Am I doing something wrong in the cut and paste? I think it happens when you change to a layer of a different scale. I notice that other things like drawing titles do similar things. They will not show the new layer scale until you change the data in the symbol. I usually scale it and scale it back again. Is there a way to universally select and reset these object that go whacky when you change scales? Also why do arrowheads not rescale when you move them to a layer of a different scale? the typical default arrowhead of .125" is ok for 1/2" scale but WAY too big for 1/8" scale. Again is there some way to rescale a layer and have the proportionality hold? Is there a way to universally rescale all the objects things that go whacky when you rescale a layer??
  8. Reading about all the bugs and problems with vw9.x I was wondering which combination of platform and version is the most bug free and reliable? I am still in 8.52 and despite its problems... I am hestiant to move up because the cure sounds worse than the disease. I know 8.52 is the end of the line in eight and no work is done by the VW engineers on it.... but I am still not sure if I do not up grade my hardware and operating system will ANY version of 9 be an improvement or a problem and WHAT are the basic improvements. If they are related to 3D modelling, for exampple, it would be of no use to me at this date. As marc anthony sings... "I need to know."
  9. I understand how to select several objects and stretch them. Let me give you an example of what THEY do and WE cant.. when they have complex cornice in elevation view with a complex provide... gutter, cove etcs.. and you want to move the over hang outr from the bldg. The select the line of the profile and offset them the required distance... then they select the horzontal line and simply extemd them ALL to the profile. When I do that the OTHER end of the line extend in a proportinal amount to the length of the line. THEIR other ends stay put... WHat gives? AM I using the wrong command? I select and drag.
  10. Thanks for that reply. I find that when my file size becomes 3mb saving begins to take what seems like a long time.. at least noticeably longer.. I see the little hour glass. I also find that, with my save set at 5 minutes... it does not matter how much work I have done once the file reaches that 3+mb size. This is on windows using 8.52. But I notice the same behavior on my G4 and OS9. In fact if I save immediately after saving.. without doing anywork.. it still seems to take time.. when it should take no time at all. What gives?
  11. How large are your typical files? Are there strategies for decreasing file size? Does file size slow down the save command? Is there a ratio of "acceptable file size" to RAM or something like that? Does adding layers and classes increase file size? What elements in a drawing increase files size significantly... 3d objects... hatches.. text... multiple fonts and sizes... precision setting?
  12. Yes I am asking how to draw elevations. Of course I know how to construct them from plan views.. which is hown the ACAD people in my office do. However, they seem to have some powerful window creation tools... I think add ons, not part of ACAD.. and their hatching seems to be much better. Also I notice that ACAD people are able to stech whole bits of drawings in a way I cant seem to do in VW. Am I right? On the other hand, in plan views, the VW wall tools, doors and windows are very powerful and creating plans in VW seems more efficient. Am I right? Not working in ACAD it is hard to evaluate the 2, but on the other hand I dont want to learn ACAD, because it is not a WYSIWYG program and that is a very regressive way to work on a computer. THE WYSIWYG aspect of VW is the most user friendly aspect of the program... I think.
  13. I will check it out next time they disappear. I am working in top plan 2D workspace and only occassionaly do I accidentally toggle a different view. Wnen I do that I toggle turn it off. I think zero brings me back... more to follow.. thanks
  14. I find that drawing elevations from plans is very much like 2 D drafting. In fact, the ACAD people in the office work that way line by line, except for their window creation, which is very usuful. Also ACAD has a very powerful hatch tool which works with line and unlike what we need to do... if I am correct... is to create a polygon and then fill it. It seems that ACAD has a distinct advantage when it comes to dreating elvations... Or am I missing something?
  15. Katie, unless these are toggles and I inadvertantly turn them off... they are never changed. Further when I restart the program its works fine, so whatever is causing the cues to disappear no longer is present. Unless there is some toggle-like feature. I would say that there is some bug which could be related to anything. It only occurs after some time... perhaps with several files open. A mystery it will remain... I suspect.
  16. VW layers become classes... WHat do VW classes become? Nothing? If I understood how ACAD thinks I could maybe work in a manner which would make export simpler.. and still allow me to work in VW as I do.. but alas I am ACAD illiterate. To answer Katies question about my "floors" and layers.... One floor may have information on several layers. I pit the wiring and RCP stuff on a separate layer... although I could assign them to a class and turn the class on when I want to see the RCP. Similarly I often do a structure plan on a separate layer. I am just getting into using clasees and class visibility...
  17. My experience is that I cannot export my 8.52 files "exactly" to DWG without losing some things. I work with ACAD people and exporting a file for them to use is always problematic. Layers and classes are disorganized and confusing... line weights need massaging... and there are "lcous" marks all over the drawing... proabably realted to the windows and doors in walls. No fills seem to export. What am I doing wrong? Does any one have a step by step way of setting up an export so that the dwg file is actually USABLE by the ACAD drafters? Also.... When I draw a plan... I typically stack up the floors on separate layers... which is something I find convenient and logical.. but to export such a file I have to do each floor and its associated layers separately making several dwg files. Am I doing this wrong? Is there a decent quide on exporting to dwg other than the manual's basic explanation?
  18. The cursor DOES appear to work normally when the cues disappear. I can find the corner, for example.. but not the CENTER... and things like ALIGN do not manifest. Perhaps I hit a Y and turned them off.. BUT when I check the preferences... it tells me that they are ON... I suspect something is faulty there. Is the Y a toggle type function?
  19. This is a windows issue. I want to make it clear that the smart cursor cues or whatever they are called are functioning one moment and then all the sudden stop functioning. The check box for smart cues IS checked when this happens. No other setting or preferences have been changed. For some reason they simply QUIT and the only way to get them back is to quit the program and relaunch it. I can try the mouse acceleration or perhaps the driver... but clearly something is not working the way its supposed to work.
  20. Katie.. This is a situation where the cues stop working for no apparent reason. Unless there is some keystrokes which disable the feature... Without doing anything other than save, quit and re-launch the cues re appear. Can you figure this out? It is not particular to a file.. it happens on all files which are open when the problem manifests.
  21. Using Windows 2000, VW 8.52.. I notice at time the smart cursor cues stop working. The preferences indicate that they are "ON". Have to save work and re start the program... What gives?
  22. At the time I upgraded to 9.0 I was use 8.52... which I am still using at present. The upgrade at that time... promotional or whatever was $262. I have the receipt. the upgrade now is nothing like that and as far as I understand. 9.5 is only a debugged 9.0 and not a new features set. Am I wrong? Is 9.0 or 9.1 stilled offered? If not that the 8.52 to 9.5 IS the only upgrade one can make, and unless you have a mistake on the website... this IS a rip off.
  23. I was one of the first to purchase 9.0. It cost $263 plus 15$ for shipping. Release 9.0 was a disaster and it was returned and I received my money back. I have followed the boards and am considering venturing into 9.5 which seems to have many off the bugs of 9.0 removed. Yet when I look to see the upgrade pricing... I see it is $550. This is truly outragsous. And I wrote a letter about the product... and marketing VW...and of course... it was not answered. I don't believe this is reasonable... Had I left the product on the shelf and waited for the "improvement"... I would have received an up grade from 9.0 to 9.5 for free... Under these circumstances... those of us who suffered with 9.0 and took a STAND and sent a message to the company should NOT be penalized by paying twice. It was OUR being used as beta tester guinea pigs that led to the improvements in 9.5. Nice way to treat devoted long time users... and at least this users which supports the product in ACAD environments DAILY. Thanks alot...
  24. I would like to see 2 window view of the same drawing on the screen at the same time. I have been trying to convince the marine charting industryu to adopt a similar concept. One window is small and can be the entire drawing while the other ... main window is the detailed .. zoomed in view. ... or the reverse.. This would allow you to see a global and local view at the same time. If you went a bit further with the concept.. one window could be and elevation view and as you changed the plan view you would SEE the change immediately in the elevation view... for example. The view in the window could be defined using a click and drag to select the area of the drawing for the small window... since you are dreaming defjef
  25. Correct me if I am wrong... but has the cost of the product and the upgrqade from 8.85 been substantially increased? I was one of those who ordered 9.0 sight unseen... and returned it after a week or two of bitter disappointment and support from others on this board. Now that 9.5 is released it seems as if the price has been substantially increased... If so What gives???
