  1. I have Architect.

I am trying to use GIS to input a plat and augment it with roads, etc.  Here's what I did:

    1) I got a KML of the plat and convertered it to a shp.

    2) I located the property with the GIS locate, and after a while the image came up and was fairly accurate.

    3) I imported the shp file, and it displayed the plat layout as a filled trapezoid shape (I just want the plat outline, and don't want it to be filled).  I can't seem to do anything with the filled figure.

    4) If I try to select any other tool set and tool, the GIS image goes away, so I can't trace it for roads, etc.

    5) Going back to the GIS tooset, I save the file and exit Vectorworks.  When I retrieve the file and reload Vectorworks, the plat layout is there, but the GIS isn't.  Vectorworks is trying to retrieve it (according to the message at the bottom of the screen).  Sometimes it can, and sometimes it hangs.

    6) When I had the GIS image up and the plat layout, I tried GIS stake tool and could stake the 4 corners of the plat.  But when I want to the Site Planning tool (and the GIS picture disappeared) the stakes were there.  I then tried to use the Property Line Tool (I have the original surveyed plat) with the stakes, but the scaling was totally off and the lines drawn by the Property Line Tool didn't match with the stakes (the lines were way too short).

Does anyone know what is going on here, and how I can get a plat into Vectorworks (using GIS, because I need features other than the surveyed plat (such as roads, streams, etc.)?

  2. Thanks for your response. Yes, I didn't want those classes visible or exported. They are furniture classes that I use for space planning, but didn't need to go to an architect. Did you turn on the classes before you exported the drawing?

I tried to use eDrawings on the exported DWG file, but couldn't get the 3D model to rotate. The 2D plan view looks correct in eDrawings. However, when I tried using the Autocad online viewer (which allows me to rotate the 3D model, I got the same bad results that I got by reimporting the model back into Vectorworks: parts of the exported model are missing.

There might be a bug in VW 2014. Is there any way I could get your DWG exported model? Since I am currently not on maintenance, I doubt that Vectorworks support will help me.

  3. I am having a great deal of difficulty exporting what seems to be a fairly straightforward 3D Vectorworks model into a DWG (or DXF for that matter). The model is a two floor apartment as 3 separate design layers with layer 1 showing the first floor, layer 2 showing the ceiling/floor beam layout, and layer 3 showing the second floor.

    I am using VW 2014.

What I get when I reimport the DWG file back into VW to check it is some detail on layer 1, all detail on layer 2, and no detail on layer 3.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong, or how to get a clean import.

The file is too big to upload on this BB. However, you can download it here: Vectorworks file export problem www.jjworld.com/ht/Apt_1&13_Actual.vwx

I need to do this because I can't find an architect in the Miami-Dade/Broward County, FL area that uses Vectorworks. If anyone knows of an architect in this area, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I am having extreme difficulty importing 3D models from a feature-driven 3D modeller (Geomagic Designs-made by 3D Systems). Geomagic can export SAT files (in a multitude of different versions) and Parasolid files (x_t). It cannot export IGES files, but can export STEP files.

I want to use VW 2014 to take my models and produce high quality patent drawings (Geomagic cannot do this). I have exported my models in SAT and x_t formats, and they don't import very well into VW. Once imported, the x_t files seems to take forever to do even the simplest operations, and the SAT files don't import correctly.

Does anyone know what version of SAT file VW likes? I have tried several, but with different results. Does anyone have any good way of importing 3D files into VW? This whole episode is driving me insane.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
