  1. Hi, is it correct that Bot Z is only available when I create a shape then extrude from the top/plan view? also, If I have a 3D object and I want to place it at 0,0,0 how do I do this? The Modify > Move > Move3D is an offset from the objects current position and the object info does not show its current position. Also when I move the object it shows the polar coords (I think) rather than the cartesian. Is it possible to switch these? thank you
  2. Fixed. Someone else had a preferences.xml which I dropped in place (user > library .....) and worked fine
  3. Hi, VW crashed whilst I had preferences open and now when I open VW I get the following error: could not find the factory default preferences in vectorworks preferences.xml I can see the preferences.xml in my settings folder but I have no idea where the factory default one should be. any help would be great as I am currently stranded thanks
  4. Hi, when I import a .skp model I place it into a new document with a scale of 1:1. I then scale the document to the same scale as my working document (let's say 1:50) I then copy the model and paste it into my working document. I do this because if I import the .skp into the working document at 1:50 it remains at 1:1 size even though the dimensions are correct so if it is 1000 x 1000 x 1000 it is 50 times the size of another cube of the same size in the same document which is also showing the same 1000 x 1000 x 1000. Is there a better way to do this? thank you
  5. Thank you. (Vincent) I come from a non-CAD background so the other apps are Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop etc. The closest I have come is C4D which does have a hierarchy. I am not moaning just finding things out as I am new to this stuff thanks again
  6. Hi, following this post the import from sketchup worked perfectly. http://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=170387&Searchpage=1&Main=34355&Words=sketchup&Search=true#Post170387 My questions are: what does convert to mesh then convert to nurbs then ungroup then stitch and trim surfaces do the imported sketchup model ? also I am unsure on the usage policy of objects from sketchup warehouse (especially now its Trimble not Google) does anyone know if the objects can be used in teaching (I work at a University) thank you
  7. Thanks bcd - tried that but still no go. (thanks again)
  8. Hi, I tried exporting DWG and DXF to import into PhotoShop (3D) but PS does not recognise the files (which it should). I then exported to 3DS and PS was ok with it except that several of the meshes had moved position (it was pretty messy). Also I tried a pdf (was playing around at this point) and although the PDF auto opened in acrobat (and looked fine) in PS it wanted a password which is a bit confusing as I never set one and it already showed in acrobat. Anyhow, does anyone have experience of saving VW in a 3D format for use in PS and if so what is the best way to do this? thank you
  9. I have no choice but to use VW I am incredibly surprised there is no hierarchy. Even find does not find an object. Oh well thanks for the reply
  10. Hi, being new (very new) to VW I am a bit lost in understanding how to select objects in the scene window. What I mean is that in all of the other apps I use there is a palette with an object hierarchy where I can see the make up of the scene and select objects. In VW if I have a group and in that group is an extrude then I double-click the group to go into group edit then I double-click the extrude to go into extrude edit. At this point there is not object hierarchy to view (breadcrumb trail). If I get to the point where I have a few hundred objects in the scene how do I select the lathe on workbench 5 when I have 50 workbenches (for example) without a hierarchy? I guess I must be missing something here (I hope so). thanks for any replies
  11. Thank you. I realise I used the wrong example. As well as a box I want to texture individual faces on different 3D objects. Would convert (mesh, nurbs or 3D polys) be the correct method? I ask because if I convert to a mesh and go into the group and texture a single face then when I exit the group the texture is no longer there (but it is there when I am in group mode) thank you again
  12. I think it is better to convert to mesh but once again I am unsure (thanks)
  13. Hi, I am new to VW. I create a box and I want to texture the individual faces of the box. What I did was to convert the box to NURBS and then edit the group where I could target individual faces and texture them. This worked but I am unsure that this is the correct or best process. Is there a better way? thank you
