  1. hi, J. i second peter's suggestion. 13,000 vertices is certainly high for one contour. depending on what you are doing as far as the project is concerned, i think you using a setting of much higher than 6" and still have a reasonably accurate site model. cheers, ray
  2. can't read the image very well. but, could it be that you are placing a 3d image prop (red "3" indicates 3d) onto a 2d section drawing? ray
  3. i'm getting more crashes than ever right now...too many to count. sent one file to vss tech support three hours ago and loading another up to dropbox as i write this. many of the same situations you, christiaan, mentioned above: "switching layers, panning, zooming, copy pasting, just finishing a save or something like that." working in open gl seems to increase the crashing. also getting a lot of out of memory messages. all of this accelerated in the last 36 hours.
  4. thanks. michael. that is a good trick. i managed to pull it off. however, it is cumbersome to say the least. i have several variations of a site/building design. i was hoping to set up a view port, then click layers on and off as i do with camera viewports. but, the combination clip cube-dl section vp-slvp makes this really complicated. in the end i had to compromise the number of variations i could show in section. also kept running into the "out of memory" wall. with improvements being made in open gl and the clip cube, i hope a more direct and more flexible method will come in the very near future. this would be very useful for design studies. jim and dave, please consider this a wish: to directly create 3d section sheet layer viewports from the clip cube, that are editable on the sheet layer in terms of classes, layers, other settings, as are camera viewports. cheers, ray
  5. does anybody know how to create a sheet layer viewport that retains the section/axonometric view (as created by the clip cube) shown in the attached screen shot? if i create a section from the clip cube, i get a flat, 2d section. if i simply create a viewport from the view, the clip cube effect goes away. i want the image to stay exactly as it appears in the screen shot. any suggestions? cheers, ray
  6. yes, yes, yes! i'm trying to convince sketchup users in our office to use vectorworks as a "main base" for our projects. the 3d navigation makes them shake their heads and laugh. ray
  7. does your model have a terrain model? if so, maybe it needs to be updated. dtm's have the same "need to update" frame as viewports.
  8. please upgrade the "spaces" tool to allow more possibilities in graphic representation, such as the image included here. to achieve that image i had to put each space into a separate class, turn off 3d display, create an extrudes over each of the spaces with same dimensions, give create another class for extrudes. that seems like a lot of extra steps to get a simple, straight forward illustration. now i dread any changes that i may have to make. cheers, ray
  9. yes, rob, i think you are right. i have each space as a different class. as for the illustration, i'll add that to the wish list. cheers, ray
  10. okay. now i know. i was trying to set attributes in the "advanced" settings window, which for some reason was not working. however, in the "3d attributes" window it works, if you set fill to solid (not by class) then color by class. that works with either a simple color fill or at texture (assigned by class). what i would like to do is within one tool ( spaces of something similar) get the effect represented in the attached image. i did that using the space tool, 2d only, then creating an extrude of the same size with a transparent texture--two objects. unfortunately, if i change one object, i have to change the other. would be nice to use space attribute settings to get that effect with only one object. cheers, ray
  11. you are not losing your mind, michael. you posted the file as a worksheet example about two weeks ago--thanks again. i added color to your classes to see if the result in your model was the same as mine. as for 3d attributes, i clicked almost everything except the textures box. i'll try that after breakfast and post back. ray
  12. this video by michael k. shows how to write bulleted text using a worksheet: http://download2cf.nemetschek.net/www_mo...13_Software.mov it's worth watching if you haven't used worksheets.
  13. hi, jonathan. yes, i did. the issue is that--in the case of these "space" objects--the class attributes apply to the 2d component, but not the 3d. i compared this with a file that michael k. posted recently and it was the same. is there something about spaces that don't allow class attributes to show in 3d? cheers, ray
  14. i have created spaces and assigned classes to them. the class attributes show in 2d but in 3d all spaces are white. how do i get the colors of the class attributes to show in 3d? see attached screenshot. cheers, ray
  15. okay...update. the distance from the origin doesn't seem to make any difference. some of the problems in open gl navigation and rendering is probably due to the weak graphics card of the 2010 macbook pro (according to vss tech support.) jim, i am sending you a video of the lag in edit mode. cheers, ray
  16. michael, with help from michael grooves at vss tech support, i figured it out. if you open the ?set criteria?, the default is the first layer on the list, not the layer you previously selected. ?ok? is also the default. it is too easy to accidently change the layer setting, which is what i did. after adding a row, the worksheet recalculated with the empty layer. i suggest a redesign. there should be one option: ?edit criteria? which opens with previously selected criteria, and when there is none for a particular row, you set it yourself, in other words no defaults except for previously selected criteria. cheers, ray
  17. michael, here's a youtube link... i sent the file to vss tech support. hopefully they will find the problem soon. cheers, ray
  18. thanks, michael. the video helps a lot. i managed to start a worksheet and generate the information i need. however, something strange is happening. after inserting the database information along with the criteria, when i insert a row, all of the previously inserted data disappears. is there a bug here, or am i doing something wrong? ray
  19. thanks, michael. that's exactly what i'm looking for! worksheets...i looked on the vw website for training videos, but didn't see an intro to worksheets right off the bat. do you know of a good source for such a thing? cheers, ray
  20. hi, dave. you reminded me of something i didn't check yet: distance from origin. because we integrate so much with gis, the models are often far from the origin with few general problems. i will reset the origin and see if that makes a difference. cheers, ray
  21. i am using the the floor tool to create schematic building masses (because it s a hybrid--if any body knows of a better tool, please let me know.) unfortunately, i can't simply select all buildings and see the sum of their footprint areas. is there a way to do this without selecting each one and opening the editing window, then writing down the area of the polygon? i've never used worksheets. is that applicable to multiple floor areas? i'm really open for suggestions here. cheers, ray
  22. jim, mine is/was much, much slower. i say was, because due to another problem (no shadows in open gl) i deleted my design layer, imported the same from an older back-up, and then the shadows returned and the editing modes work much more smoothly. apparently it was something in that layer, don't know what. i'll pay more attention and let you know in case the problems return. cheers, ray
  23. hi, jim. "enhanced navigation graphics" was on. turning it off, then on again a couple of times seemed to make no difference. much of the 3d open gl lag seems to be related to a referenced dwg (referenced as viewport, old way, not direct as now possible. the sluggish redraw in edit mode seems to be independent of all the above. thanks. ray
  24. yes, i concur, look like two objects occupying the same place. happened to me many times, especially two dtms on different layers. looks like you are wanting to paste the brick texture over the grass. though vw allows stacking layers (if you follow a precise stacking order--is it first placed goes on top? can't remember), i generally cut out the lower texture with the clip surface tool, because i found that the stacking didn't always work. could be better in 2014, haven't tried it. stuck in my old ways. ray
  25. i am responding to something mentioned in another thread, but maybe it deserves a new one?... i too am noticing laggy navigation after installing sp1. (and i think it is worse than before sp1) this is especially noticeable when zooming in 3d/open gl views and in plan view when in the edit mode for floors and extrudes (very slow redraws). is it just me, or is there a more general problem? cheers, ray
