  1. Thanks guys, I finally figured out how to turn of the grid. I am working in OpenGL as working in wire frame is very disorienting. I don't mind having a grid while in 3D "I am used to it in Rhino" but it seems in VW the grid shows through the objects (or floats in front?). I am used to having the grid under and behind objects. which gives a sense that the objects are not floating but are grounded. In any event, I found the button to hide the grid hidden in a menu as per the norm with VW.
  2. Hi, I was wondering if there was a setting where you cant see the ground grid through 3d objects. It is very disorienting having the grid floating on top of or seen through the objects. It makes it that I can't tell if the objects are on top of the ground plane or below it. I've worked in a lot of 3D programs but I am new to 3D in VW, so far it feels a bit clunky.
  3. Thanks for the reply. I still need to familiarize myself with drawing coordination. I've been using 2011 for 7 years now and didn't have the functionality. I'm up to 2017 now so I don't know if there are drastic differences between 17-18. By sheet number field, you mean in the sheet layers pallete? I think that is what I was thinking of. More or less, the "sheet field" becomes the place holder for the page number field so the sheets update if one is inserted? The hardest part is sharing with people who don't know CAD standards. numbers like "4.02" mean little to an exhibit developer or an educator. Most lay people understand page numbers. Looks like I have some tinkering to do.
  4. I have a question about numbering drawings in a way individuals who are not trained to understand sheet numbering can follow. For all of our projects we present our work to our exhibitions developers, educators, and or curator assigned to the project. I usually follow the USNCAD standard for sheet numbering. However, people seem to have a hard time following the sheet number system. They are usually either viewing them as a PDF or we print sets to present at our meetings. They get confused by the sheet numbers and just say something like, "look at page 6" as it is the 6th page but the sheet number might be 4.02 or something. Then everyone is fishing around for the right page "sheet" I've started adding a "page 00 0f 00 series to the title block for them to follow but I am not sure how to make that work with the automatic drawing coordination. Do I set up the page number in the sheet title or sheet number column of the sheet layer organization pallet? I'd like to keep the page numbers in normal numerical order and the sheet numbers to fit in with that. Is that possible? That way if I have to insert say, a 4.03 after a sheet into the set the page numbers "00 of 00" stay in numerical order. Oh, and don't even get me started on when we have to break up the sets into pieces as what was once page 10 can become page 1. Since they can't read drawings I can't just leave them as is and follow the sheet numbers. Any tips?
  5. VERSION OF VW "2011" I have a title block in a document, and I made edits to the the title block in the file "simple title blocks" but I can't make the title block in my working file take the attributes. Here is the process I go through, am I going about it the wrong way? What I do to update the title block since there is no refresh button is as follows. I go to the document in the "sheet borders and title blocks" folder in the program folder. I have the title block I created in the document titled "simple title blocks" I go to the title block symbol and edit the text. "I noticed that I accidentally didn't use the same font so I fixed it" After making the edits I save and close the "simple title blocks" document. I then go to my working file but the title block doesn't reflect the edits I made to the "parent title block" I don't see a way to refresh the title block, so I click on the title block and select the title title block button in the Object Info Pallet. That opens an import title block dialogue box. When I choose the title block that I edited "the same one that is in my working document" rather than overriding the settings it reverts to an older version of the title block and uses an old record format rather than the one attributed to the title block. What do you think? Should the title block symbol live in the working document? I also need to be able to share the title block with coworkers on different machines. I want to be able to have a master file of the title block so that if others make bad edits to the title block there is a master that doesn't change. Is that possible?
  6. I did just find a design layer that I didn't know was there with a title block on it. that accounts for one of the title blocks. My coworker must have created that one without me knowing. That still doesn't account for the "None Symbol" or "Symbol-1" I can account for 3 of them now. but that leaves 2 mystery ones. Thanks for your help!
  7. "at that time" now I feel old and stupid haha. Actually, it is showing a fifth symbol called "none" and that doesn't exist either. The browser keeps showing these title block as being in the "simple title blocks file that is the default file for title blocks but those symbols aren't in the file.
  8. in any event in that image there are 4 vertical title blocks shown even though 2 of the 4 no longer exist as a file as far as I can tell. I can't find them in the "programs folder" at any rate. I can't tell if they are embedded in a file and they are being referenced from there or not.
  9. 2011, yes I am a bit behind in upgrading as VW no longer offers upgrade price from 2011. I am an intermittent designer for my employer and they are running 2017 and they haven't offered me a way to 2018 yet.
  10. Where is that located in the browser? I can't find that option. Is there another location in the UI where that option resides? I found refresh favorites from disk is that what you are referring to?
  11. I have this issue where there are old title blocks in my resource browser that are no longer in the sheet borders-title blocks file folder in the system folder. It is now confusing when making changes to the current title block. My naming system is mostly to blame, but if the old ones didn't show up and just the new one it would be bit easier. Is there a way to clear the old ones from the browser? Why are they still there if I deleted them from the system folder? I was looking at the purge tool but I am worried that I will cause problems with the file.
  12. Here is what is on top of my wish list: A democratic pricing system that values all end users equally. I would like a fully functional application for a single price with a decent value. How is it that what IMO are basic functions that should be basic are not baked into the application? I am a freelance designer, and the version of Vectorworks I can afford doesn't have some valuable basic functions i.e. batch print, automatic drawing coordination etc. I don't believe that these elements are something that the average user would never have need of. Streamlining my workflow is just as important to me as it is to a large architectural firm. Vectorworks isn't even transparent with what basic functions each version can do on it's website. It looks like they are all the same minus the industry specific elements like lights and speakers. I couldn't even find the basic tools on the VW site. Additionally, I no longer have access to the upgrade price to offset the cost to the next "caste" Even Adobe the kings of rip off, offers you a fully functional application for a single and economical price. Adobe is the industry leader in what they do yet make their product accessible without sacrificing quality. AutoCad more or less has one product one price. Rhino 3D has one product and one price and it works fantastic. I feel the Vectorworks pricing is more of a caste system catering to big companies rather than a democratic system that values all end users the same. One could argue that I could "just use AutoCad" but I don't want to. I really like Vectorworks. I am comfortable in the UI, and the companies that I work with also use VW. It makes sense for me to stick with VW, but I would like to be valued the same by my application. Please work towards making a product that offers value and quality to all end users.
  13. Figures, I guess I'll have to save up some more money for another function. I hate this caste system vectorworks doesn't treat all designers equally I guess.
  14. Thanks, Hmmmm, I don't have that in my preferences. I suppose that is in a newer version?
  15. I'm working in a file using sheet layers and viewports. When I add a new sheet or drawing labels, elevation markers etc. the page and sheet numbers don't match the sheet. Is there a way to make them do that without having to manually update all of them? Upon creation isn't too bad, but if I insert a sheet into the middle of a drawing set that becomes a huge undertaking changing labels on multiple pages. Usually as our projects progress, elements get added or subtracted or my overlords demand that I reduce the number of pages in the set. I can end up spending as much if not more time altering all the labels as I do designing the actual project. It is a huge time dump. Is there a way to streamline the process? I'm working in VW2011 fundamentals. "I know, I know, I should get the five thousand dollar version that I don't have the budget for"
  16. Ok, I realized that while working on fixing my printing issue I had to uninstall and reinstall VW a couple times. I realized that I hadn't downloaded the service pack 5 when I reinstalled the second time. The issue seems to have resolved after that. Thanks a lot for your help.
  17. Hi, the title and scale margins are set to 0. If i select the drawing label from the tool set it still does the odd behavior. i have class set to none for everything new at the moment so it doesn't attach another scale to it. The file is from someone else but i have been working with the set for a couple months with no problem. Here is a picture of the object properties from the preferences. Does anything look off?
  18. OK new problem, when I add a new Drawing Label or attempt to edit the labels title etc. all of the text gets pushed into the middle of the line. I am not sure if it is a setting that is off or what. I have a screen cap of the drawing label next to a normal one.
  19. Sorry for being so testy, it has been a rough week so far. I followed the steps and hopefully it worked right. Upon reinstalling I am now having additional issues with drawing labels. I might have to start a thread for that too ugh...
  20. I wouldn't consider 2011 to not be modern. It isn't as though I am running an antiquated application. It would have been nice if Vectorworks offered the upgrade price on 2011 then I could maybe and I mean maybe afford to buy that.
  21. Hi, I'm having a weird issue printing to PDF. It just hits the post script dialogue and wont go farther. I've already talked with tech support and they have have the file I was working in but I haven't heard anything back. I don't think the file is corrupt as I can print anything even in a new file. I've tried rolling back windows, reinstalling adobe, and I attempted to reinstall Vectorworks. I found that Vectorworks doesn't show up in Programs And Features. Additionally, there is no uninstall application extension file or application file in the VW folder. How do I properly uninstall to be sure I cleanly uninstall the program for reinstall? I tried deleting the folder in C: Program Files X86: Vectorworks 2011. I am not sure if that truly removed all the files. Any help would be appreciated. I am now unable to work properly if I cant easily share files.
  22. I am a freelance designer, and I recently purchased VW Fundamentals 2011. I spent over a thousand dollars on this, and I cant export PDF? Apparently I have to spend even more money for the privilege of doing so? Exporting to PDF is one of the most basic needs of any program. How can that not be an option? Needless to say, I am very disappointed.
