  1. Hey all, I am having an issue when I create solid subtractions. I create the initial extrude and it looks perfect in any render mode. When I subtract a shape "a rectangle for an opening" lines will appear on the surface of the newly created solid subtraction. These lines originate at corners and extend either to another corner or the center of a line between corners. This happens regardless of how I create the original shape or the intersecting shape. i.e. using the rectangle tool, polyline tool, etc. The lines show up in polygon render mode in my viewports and design layers. I have tried workarounds such as using "Shaded Polygon No Lines" with the foreground render mode set to hidden line which makes the unwanted lines lines disappear but the faces of all my surfaces are shaded grey. Adding lights in the design layer doesn't light the faces in the sheet layer. I am not sure why rendering modes look different between design and sheet layers. Any ideas on how to get rid of these lines? I attached a test file so you can see what I am talking about. Community Test.vwx
  2. Interesting, mine isn't ticked on. I will try and see if that makes any difference.
  3. Right, but even if I navigate to another sheet layer then navigate back the viewports want to update even if I didn't change anything on the layer. It even has to update when I reopen the file. In some cases some elements aren't even visible when I arrive on the sheet layer making me have to update just to see what is in the viewport meaning I can't properly annotate until I update the viewport. It would be nice if the viewport visually kept what was in it until I am ready to do the update. I should mention that this happens only with 3D models and not flat 2D drawings. It just seems crazy that it takes so long to update the viewport there is no reason to have a final rendering in the viewport if it really is nly going to be seen in a PDF or printed on paper. All I want is for the viewport to render it so it looks like what I see when I work in 2D. I am inclined to think that it is something with the way VW renders the viewports. You can work all day in the design layer in Open GL without a stutter but rendering the viewport seems to tax it. I tried everything from that article but it really didn't speed anything up. It isn't as though my machine can't handle the load I am above the hardware specs for VW 2018.
  4. I am having an issue with viewports in VW 2018. Every time I open a file it has to update viewports. Additionally if I jump from one sheet to another it has to update viewports. When I go to the design layer it has to update even if I don't alter anything. Is there a way to limit the number of times the viewports need updating? It is killing my productivity having to update the viewports all the time. Also, it takes forever to update them. What would cause this? It is a 3D model and not that complex.
  5. I am having an issue when I publish to PDF. Individual title blocks look different on published PDF pages. All of the the title blocks are the same throughout, but line weights in individual title blocks will appear darker from one page to the next. Additionally some fonts will appear darker as well. I am wracking my brain trying to see if there is a setting somewhere that is different but I can't find anything that makes a difference. Thoughts?
  6. I did figure this out once. What I think I did was turn off unified view. There should be a button on the top tool bar to the left of the 3D view drop down menu.
  7. Hmmm, is show details a 2018 thing? I'm in 17. The void is probably less important than the openings looking right. I could probably sell the lack of void to my boss. Those stripes make no sense. In the interim I have been making the core the same color as one of the walls and have one side with a strip the thickness of the drywall on one side. I guess I can make one sheet of drywall 1/32" thick and increase the interior thickness to accommodate. What I really want is the wall I have on off to the side to have an opening through it. That would make me happy as that is how the walls are built. Like I said, I think I might be asking for too much. I could technically change it all in Photoshop, but why have that extra step?
  8. Not bad, but on the walls where the opening intersects the other walls there is a ridge. I tried adding zeros to the thickness but when it gets too thin you get clipping. It is funny VW doesn't consider that an opening in a wall doesn't show layers when walking through. The problem isn't there if the whole wall is identical all the way around. Currently my project has it set up where there are normal walls then an extrusion across the opening but that looks more strange as there isn't a line there in life either. This is a rotating exhibit space where we alter the walls frequently and It would be nice to have the walls easier to change. even when I try a styled wall it is the same thing. I can't imagine it is that rare to have a wall opening without framing. I have a handful in my house haha.
  9. Have a look at what I have so far. I have openings in the walls with components. I gave them all their own dims and fills etc. I didn't name any of the components in this exercise but I have been naming them GWB, studs etc. It is irritating that it wants to revert them to textures all the time though but that is a story for another day. When I create the door opening I can see the layers at the top of the opening when using the walk through tool I can hid that if I use a cased opening but our openings don't have trim. If I create a wall made from multiple walls like ours our built the door cant cut through both. I may have expectations that VW cant do. I like the components as I can add the wall colors to opposite sides of a single wall. I prefer using walls as apposed to extrusions as I like the functionality of the components. walls.vwx
  10. One weird workaround I came up with was to make another wall the width of the void made the height of the wall the thickness of a wall and made the bottom offset the height of the opening. That plugged the opening in the void over the opening. It works but it would be better if the door opening filled the void in between the 2 walls.
  11. So I create the void as a component? I guess I might be being anal about it. I was hoping that when I was in plan view the void would be visible. Right now it looks like there's a giant stud running across the middle of the wall. If you want to see what I have I can attach a file. I have a test file I am trying things out on so I don't have to do it in my giant work file.
  12. Hi all, I am trying to create some 18 inch thick walls with an opening. These are preexisting walls. The simple way to do it I guess, would be to just change the settings so that the wall is a solid 18 inches. However, that is not how the wall is built. Obviously they used metal studs and there is a void in the center. When I draw it that way and put in a door as an opening there is a gap in the overhead between the 2 walls. Is there a way to cap the top of the door? Maybe I can change the thickness of the door in one wall to cut across to the other side? What say you!?
  13. Well, I think it was a class thing. Once I changed the classes of the walls it stopped doing it. Thanks for the help!
  14. I can give you a screenshot if I can get it to happen again.
  15. Hmmm, I am not sure I am permitted to share the file as it belongs to my employer. Not sure how to strip it back that I am not violating any company policy.
  16. Hi Gang, I am having this issue in my 3D model where walls will become invisible when I open my file. I have all classes turned on, in view I have classes set to show/ snap/ modify others. I can hover over the walls and they glow so I can select them. I then have to go through and select each individual wall and change them to solid. It is a real nuisance. Any thoughts as to why that would occur? Also, it becomes problematic select all as I have visible walls with a fill meaning if I select all everything is solid even objects with texture fill.
  17. Thanks for the input! much appreciated. I have no problem working totally in 3D I just need to convince my senior designers to go along. They have been around a long time from the days of going to the printers for large drawing sets (30 plus years). They aren't resistant to change thankfully; but as you know, people don't like to go out of their comfort zones too quickly. Referencing could work, but I am an off site worker so I am not sure there is a way I can make that work. I work for the Smithsonian so outside access can be tricky. I tend to try and keep a single file if it is for a single gallery space approximately 5-10,000 square feet. My more recent experience with a smaller 3D space in VW 2017 has been buggy? I have a file with 3D that isn't that huge 23MB but when I move to the 3D view it will often crash if it is on open gl which is easier to work in "visually" That is why I am a little afraid to cram everything into a single file. I can easily have 100 MB files in Sketchup or Rhino and they run fine. My computer is well above the specs for 2018 or 17 so it isn't hardware related. Anyway both of your comments are well taken, thank you.
  18. Thanks, Ironically I have that tutorial bookmarked! I started following it to create a new title block. I have put it on the shelf until I finish up the job I am on so I am not trying to implement it in the middle of the project. I am trying to use the existing naming conventions I am working with but I want the layers to be numbered the way you have them in the example. I guess I can have the text say "page" instead of "plate" Luckily I am in the process of getting the team to use sheet layers and custom title blocks as they weren't using any of it before. They were using design layers for everything including what would be sheet layers. It was crazy, the title blocks in order to fit on the page were like 30 feet tall. They were also splitting every individual floor plan type into a separate vectorworks file. I got it into my head that I wanted to get them more organized so I started getting them on board with these elements. Happily they have been receptive, and as I am a contract worker i have more time to dedicate to getting them up to speed in between projects. I will get back to that title block soon in a fresh document with brand new record formats etc. I think I can get that numbering system to work. Thanks for your help!
  19. Ah, it seemed like my office was going to get us all 2018 but it hasn't happened. Sounds like a nice function. Basically, our office uses an "X of Y" system for sheet numbering, rather than just a single number. And to confuse everything further they call them pages rather than sheets. So I have to name things pages in the title block even though they occupy the sheet placeholder in the layers pallet and the record format. I have added a screenshot of what the organization pallet looks like. We have the sheets in the Sheet Number Column in a 1 of 49 sequence. In the sheet name column we use the the Discipline, Type, Sequence nomenclature. Using that, it is easier to insert a sheet as you can add a letter or number into the sequence. Where it gets crazy, is the X of Y numbering. We have to use the "X of Y" numbering for the rubes as they can't follow the USCAD standards for sheet titles. That also means when I use a detail marker I have to reference the XY sheets meaning if I insert a sheet I have to manually update huge numbers of sheets. It is all very complicated and I am trying to either get it simplified or at least have a workaround. The workaround I have been trying is to use their existing nomenclature and fit it in the VW system. Ugh, my head is going to explode.
  20. Hi all, I am looking to improve my workflow in Vectoworks (2017). I am an exhibitions designer, and we tend to span between architecture and industrial design. In an individual project we will have to design not only floor plans and elevations of a building, we also design the individual objects placed in the building. I was wondering if anyone could site some links or offer some tips etc. that I might find useful. I have been working in VW since 2008 but haven't fully utilized 3D in vectorworks. Instead I would mass out my 3D work in Rhino or Sketchup then export DXF's and import those into VW. However, that hasn't always generated the best results and it is cost prohibitive to keep all these applications up to date so export functions arent't always reliably available. We tend to end up drawing huge amounts of individual elevation drawings when we could be using the section viewport command to create them. We are considering doing everything in 3D and generating the 2D views from that. I am assuming there are limitations to how much can be crammed in a single VW file before it becomes unstable. Do you recommend creating one 3D file that has the bulk of objects massed in the space, then creating another separate file with more detailed individual objects "i.e. an interactive exhibit"? However, having multiple individual files offers its own set of challenges with regards to updating layers etc. I am a little familiar with workgroup referencing, but I am not sure that it works in that way. I guess this is a pretty complex question haha but if anyone cares to chime in, I would be happy to hear from you. Cheers!
  21. Yes that would be a nice function. I guess it is a wish list item for now. I just figure if automation can save time this would be a huge time saver. I am always looking for ways to improve my workflow and easier sheet insertion would go a long way toward that.
  22. Gotcha thanks. It is just busy work we still have to do in order to get them moved. I guess as long as the sheet is inserted closer to the bottom of the list the manual work is less haha. As long as all the sheet numbers update then it isn't the end of the world. Although, I was messing around with a file that someone else created that I work in that has 49 pages. When I create a new sheet it will auto title it 1 of 50 but all the other layers still say of 49. The other designer assigned the number 49 in the "Project" portion of the record format. Do you have to first alter that number to 50 etc. then add in the new layer/ layers and rename them all accordingly?
  23. gotcha, I thought that was the point of automatic drawing coordination haha. If I am changing the numbering in the layers pallet I assume the title blocks "should" update to match?
  24. I have a question about inserting a new layer in between 2 existing sheet layers. How do I go about inserting the new layer between say, one and two and have 2 become 3 using auto coordination? Is that even possible?
