  1. ^^^so far that has done the trick, thanks Christina. This is clearly a bug, but so far so good.
  2. False hope. Unchecking "render grey layers transparent" does not solve my problem. In order to "see" a viewport that has suddenly gone transparent, I need to alter layer visibilities in the OIP and then restore them, or switch layers and then return to the layer that the viewport resides on. This has got to be a bug, with identical behavior in 2011 and 2012. Any one else see this? Nick
  3. In viewport advanced properties in the OIP, there is a checkbox for "render gray layers transparent". Unchecking this seems to restore my viewports, but their disappearance, or transparency was unpredictable anyway. I had never unchecked this box and have had only sporadic problems with surprise viewport transparency. Any ideas on how to have this box unchecked by default? I can't find a preference for this behavior, but may not be looking in the right place. thanks, Nick
  4. This happens to me as well, and not necessarily with duplicated or section viewports. A SLVP with only gray layers will go transparent for me when it's a member of a group eventually. Nick
  5. I'm in the same city as the original poster. I'd be happy to run a few tests of rendering time on an 8-core Mac Pro with Spotlight and Renderworks. Mine is an older machine, with a 5770. As you know RW uses multiple cores, and the graphics card should only affect screen draws/Open GL work.
  6. Brendan, I've seen barely an improvement - except, I think in Open GL renders. My reasons for upgrading the cards had much to do with moving quickly past the capabilities of the stock GPUs, and evolving connector technologies. I use 2 24" LED displays, and had been driving them DVI through Atlona adapters. It worked fine, but not well integrated, and upgrading yet again to the 5770 solved 2 problems, 2 onboard MDPs and slight acceleration.
  7. Brendan, I use the same machine as you, with a bit less RAM, but a Radeon 5770. I've upgraded the video cards in this machine several times since it was new. From what I'm seeing, Renderworks will use the machine's core processors, Open GL will use the GPU, anything else is stuck on a single core. Which for us in entertainment, where line renders are a must, is a huge disappointment. Even wireframe refreshes when panning or zooming a document with imported symbols is a train wreck. I would say save your money until NVW updates the code to actually use the cores and the gpus, because right now, it does not. Nick
  8. So, after a crash every 20 minutes or so in the last few days, I'm now losing drawing labels in SLVPs both in printed sheets from VW or PDF exports. This is beyond aggravating. Anyone seen this before? Nick
  9. Hello board, I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to relocate the layer plane. I'm working on a bloated mess of a drawing imported from .dwgs and .pdfs. Now with 3D layers and objects added in a hybrid drawing. Somehow the layer plane is a wee tiny square 152' below the Z origin. All layers have a Z of 0'. I've searched all help documents and cannot find any reference to redefining the layer plane. I'm sure it's something dumb that I'm missing! thanks in advance, Nick
  10. Thanks also, for the suggestion about plug-ins. I removed Landru Design's AudioToolbox from the workspace and VW has perked up a bit. Not to 2010 snappiness, but enough that I can make progress. It does seem, though, that Vectorworks does not use system resources very efficiently. Ah, well - it's all fixed in 2012, right? -)
  11. You are correct, Grant. Looking at Activity Monitor, CineRender will take all 8 cores and at least 1.5 GB of RAM. Final Quality Renderworks finishes faster than hidden line. Of course, I have a simple document with only a few colors, no elaborate lighting. But it is a little silly...and underwhelming. I've added several days to this job just waiting for the screen to refresh, it seems. cheers, Nick
  12. Hello all, I'm struggling to understand the slow behavior in rendering and screen redraws of even wireframe drawings in VW2011. I just rendered a hidden line viewport on a small-ish document (55MB) with Apple Activity Monitor open during the render. VW app shows 100% CPU usage, but that appears to be only 1 core, as the CPU meter is flat lined at well below 25%. Also, VW is only using 750 or so MB of RAM during this process, and drops to 550MB at idle. What am I missing? I expect renders to be slow, but this is substantially worse than 2010. And wireframe screen redraws are grinding my work to halt. Why is VW not using the horsepower available to it? I'm running on the 8 Core MacPro 3,1 described in my sig below. Any ideas? thanks, Nick
  13. I'm noticing the same sluggishness, it seems to be symbol related. I have a hybrid 2D/3D drawing with 2D layers projected in layer plane, and a 3D model built from symbols created from .dwgs. I can count to 10 before wireframe rendering redraws on changing views or zooming. The file is small, less than 25MB. I'm running on the MacPro described in my sig below. Certainly no slouch of a machine...
  14. Is this still true in VW 2011? I've been told that 2011 Fundamentals gains batch printing and pdf import, but I'm skeptical. And it's not an easy question to answer from the available information on the website. That said, those two features are among the MOST fundamental of any professional drafting workflow. To exclude them is inappropriate at this price point. Nick
