  1. Has anybody found a workaround for this? Over a year and one new release since I asked about best practices for aligning curtainwall mullions in plan/elevation. It doesn't appear that anything has changed or improved in the tool... In it's current state the curtainwall is pretty limited and practically useless. Paradoxically, the old window wall tool has more functionality.

I struggle with aligning mullions to plan regulating lines, since you cannot move mullions by points or snap to guide lines.

I struggle with how to how to enter the horizontal mullion elevation of a given mullion section.

The curtainwall tool needs to be able to be inserted into a wall, since that is how storefront works in the real world.

Rather than developing "cool things" like point clouds which very few people use, I really wish VW would focus on improving basic things in the program.

  2. Why would you want to get rid of the page/sheet boundary box?

It doesn't print, and it shows the sheet size in relation to the sheet border... I find it helpful in orienting your drawing to the paper.

Oversizing your sheet will just create a larger gray box. And it might mess up your printing.

  3. It's hard to tell what your work flow looks like, or whether you use a lot of 3d geometry in your projects, so I may be off the mark a bit in my response.

Probably the best way to test project sharing would be to start with a VW file in which you have a lot of existing layers and sheets rather than try to combine individual files into a master project file.

Our office tended to separate out sections/wall sections from plans files, even if we used a VW model for 3d slices or cuts. The plan oriented files would contain a bunch of layers and sheets, some related to stories, some related to level of detail, RCP, enlarged plans, schedules, etc. This type of file, might be a good place to test sharing functionality and work flow.

Conversely, I might start fresh with a small project (keeping all sheets in one file) and see how that works.

  4. There are many, many quirks to Vectorworks!

I've never known why viewports appear nowhere near the sheet when you create them, but that is what seems to happen.

The trick I've learned is the following:

    1. Once the viewport is created, immediately cut the viewport by typing (Command+X or Control+X) or by accessing these commands using from the edit pull-down menu.

    2. Zoom to the page extents.

    3. Click down in the middle of the page and paste. (Command+V or Control+V)

  5. Move by points tool does not appear to move an individual mullion in a curtainwall edit mode, at least on my computer.

If I am in a curtainwall edit mode, and highlight the selected mullion, once I hit the move by points tool, the selection mullion is deselected and the entire wall is selected.

I do see that you can edit the grid manually by hitting the curtainwall grid dialogue box. So theoretically you can enter the dimensions manually.

  6. Okay. So I'm not crazy.

I figured out the even distribution thing. It would be very helpful to be able to align mullions or snap to something measured or measurable. I found myself having to eyeball the mullions in plan, and I kind of gave up on trying to figure out the section.

It would also be helpful to be able to duplicate the mullions by a specified distance. You can duplicate by holding down an option key. You can move by a set distance. But it doesn't appear you can do both.

    :\

  7. The edit curtainwall function is kind of a pain to work with. Does anybody have a good way to make sure that mullions are aligned with reference points in plan?

The videos seem to show most of the editing in 3D, but that makes it tough to align with a grid, or something 2D. It's very easy to make angled mullions, but hard to move them to set points of reference.

For that matter. If I want to add a horizontal mullion at 36" above finish floor, can I just type it in somewhere?

    Thx

  8. I've always found this feature (or absence of feature) somewhat puzzling and frustrating. I can't imagine that it would be that difficult to add this functionality. But perhaps coding attention has been focused elsewhere and the extrude tool is an older type of tool.

One workaround that I've used is to avoid extrudes and use the floor tool (under the aec menu). It tends to do the same sort of thing and it has 2d-3d functionality baked into it. Plus you can set the Z axis. So lights, panels, ceiling bulkheads, odd shapes can all be floors.

Maybe extrude needs to get retired to the legacy set of tools? And floor renamed?

  9. I am having the same problem. I have a hunch that it might be the VW confirm before autosave dialogue box that causes/initiates this problem. Let me run it a while the the confirm box unchecked and see what happens.

  10. According to Vectorworks 2015 Help, you can export shapefiles from Vectorworks. However when I follow the help instructions and try exporting using File_Export... export as a shapefile does not appear as an option.

Am I missing something here? Or is this a feature only available to Landmark/Designer? Or is some feature that has not been fully implemented.

    Thx,

  11. Wow! Thank you so much Dexie and especially Miguel for writing the script.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Worked perfectly. This feature should really be added to the VW tools.

  12. I've tried many times to figure this out, but can't seem to figure out how to label a item in after importing a GIS shapefile.

I know how to attach text to a record label, create a symbol and attach text to a record format. However when I try to use the ID label tool, I don't seem to get very far. There has to be a way to do this.

What I want to do is label the streets on this map. The record field is Streetname. See attached.

  13. I find the new curtainwall tool a little frustrating for the reasons POA describes. It assumes that storefront/curtainwall systems are free-standing wall elements rather than insert-able window-like elements. In the real world, sometimes storefront is conceptually more like a wall, but it also can act more like a punched opening in a larger expanse of other wall. The examples of ribbon windows or storefront set into brick come to mind.

I do wonder whether there are any architects on staff at VW and whether they have they ever worked on projects bigger than a single family house….

All that aside, it seems a little counter-intuitive to be forced to create a symbol and insert that symbol element into a wall. It works, but I haven’t figured out a way to schedule any of the curtain wall elements as symbols or standalone elements. It would be nice.

I have resurrected the legacy window wall tool for stuff like this, since it does most of what I need. It has record fields that can be quantified, and you can set some user specific. Ideally the good VW programmers would reintroduce a revamped window wall tool with the functionality of the curtainwall tool baked into it.

  14. One thing I noticed is that the font size for all the pull down menus in VW2015 seems to have gotten even smaller and much much harder to read. Your software developers must all be in their twenties. Is there any way to change this?
