  1. Thanks all for helping to explain this rather complex taxonomy of Extrude Along Path options! I wound up converting all the curves to NURBS and lofting with one rail. Still a few too many steps for something that should be rather simple, and I had to move resultant shape into place after lofting. That said, I will freely admit that I do not understand the complexity of math/programming under the hood. For comparison/reference, the "Sweep 1" function in Rhino seems to do this effortlessly/seamlessly. No need to position or rotate the profile shape relative to the path. It just works. :-) I understand that VW is a vastly different software ecosystem, but it always helps to understand how other folks are tackling this problem. Thanks again for all your help.
  2. Modeling Question. Why does extrude along path randomly rotate my profile curve? I can't seem to keep my profile in the same orientation as desired. No matter which boxes I check. Selecting Fix Profile seems to send the extrusion randomly out of position. Selecting Lock profile plane seems to not do much of anything besides create a random error message or distort the extrusion. Is this a feature of the program, or am I missing something?
  3. If the walls have components, you can do top and bottom offsets in the component dialogue box.

    Space tool 2018

I am really struggling with this tool! I am having a problem where my space label assignments cannot access the complete set of data associated with the space tool. The following dialogue box appears. However whichever selection I make, clicking OK doesn't do anything.
  5. FYI I've recently communicated with Manuel at VB regarding an update to VB Stretch. I was emailed an updated plugin for VW 2018.
  6. Making a new wall style would fix, but you could also just reorder the components of the existing wall, by editing the wall style. Invert the order of components by dragging them.
  7. Maybe I miscommunicated. I was wondering what you thought the best way would be to get from VWX to Sketchup.
  8. Does that mean you agree that FBX to Sketchup is the best way to go? Or do you have a better process? I am open to other suggestions. But haven't found anything that works as well.
  9. I am saddened to exclaim "Ugh!" with the "improvements" to this tool. When you translate 2017 spaces into VW 2018 , the field value formats associated with the legacy space go haywire and need to be reestablished. In one of my spaces, the room area field morphed into a display room perimeter field. In another of my spaces all my areas and room dimensions disappeared upon import. 100 "customizable" fields sounds amazing in promotional literature, but it sure makes for a messy object info palette. Complexity and contradiction = the price of progress? :-)
  10. I will explore the export by class options. Is there a way to import c4d into sketchup? Or are you working/rendering in Cinema 4D?
  11. I've been whinging about the trial and tribulations associated with exporting to SketchUp for years now, alas to no avail. The philosophy held by many in the VW community is that SketchUp is really unnecessary given all that VW currently does. I've always maintained however, that Sketchup is vastly more nimble at conceptualization and communicating design than VW. The learning curve is much less steep than VW. Principals of firms like it, and can use it. Making life easier between the two programs would only work to increase VW's market share. To get good exports, you need to download one plugin and and purchase one plugin for Sketchup. Simlab's FBX importer for Sketchup http://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/FBX_Importer_For_Sketchup-main.aspx (it's worth the money) Cleanup 3 https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/cleanup³ The trick is getting all the VW model triangulation to merge back together. So... here goes... Export the model as a FBX. The nice thing about this technique is that the model textures will come through. Import into Sketchup using the FBX import plugin for Sketchup. Then you will need to use the cleanup plugin to merge the triangulated faces. I have attached a screenshot of the clean settings I use. On complex models this may take a four or five minutes. Once everything is merged, explode groups without exploding everything. For reasons that are a mystery there are lots and lots of groups associated with a FBX export. The final cleanup task in SKP will involve selecting the edges (turn materials off) and making sure that none of them are soft or smooth. I've exported models using this technique to the satisfaction of my baby boomer boss. It takes about 15 minutes to get everything cleaned up and ready to use. And materials/colors seem to export with this technique. Good Luck! Sketchup Model geometry imported from VW has a lot of hidden geometry if you turn it on. Cleanup plugin settings: Sometimes I do this group by group that I selected. When you want to push pull on shapes in Sketchup, make sure that soft and smooth edges are unchecked! You will have to turn materials off and show outlines only. Most of the time soft and smooth will be checked. Uncheck these boxes.
  12. Are there any tips tricks for migrating old smart custom title blocks from 2017 to 2018? Some (in earlier posts) have suggested that legacy title blocks need to be rebuilt entirely. I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with the new tool to know whether indeed this is the case. I was able to get my old ones to work (or at least translate). But I haven't played with the tool extensively. Would like to export 2018 translated TBs to a Standard TB Seed File for others in my office to use. Any insights that can be shared would be greatly appreciated. Thx,
  13. I posted on this a while ago, and hopefully I wasn't too snarky. But I never got anything in terms of response. I figured the VW crew was busy with 2018 which, seems to have left the annotation tool in place. I keep getting the following error message on a project, and I don't know what is causing it or how to resolve. Thoughts as to what the problem is and how to resolve. +
  14. I find that I can drape a texture bed modifier on a DTM but little else. I have difficulties rendering or showing anything with them applied. J. Wallace, your instructions for how to use them seem very Landmark Based. (which is not a bad thing) I'm not sure the landscape area settings are available within the VW Architect package. Zoomer, I like your model, and wish I could figure out how to do what you have done in VW. There should be an ability to do this within the Architect package tool sets. Dividing up the site and building so thoroughly seems a little silly, but that's marketing, I suppose. At least where I live, all of our sites are steeply graded, and it is really hard to apply roads and sidewalks to complex digital terrains within VW Architect.
  15. Are texture beds available in the VW architect package? I was looking for them and couldn't locate.
  16. I'm gonna start wearing purple brown and yellow and blue, to all my client meetings, and see what types of reactions I get. :-)
  17. My vote is for improvements to consistency and clarity, please! With some ability to adjust legibility. Everything else, is a bonus!
  18. While the colors are open to debate, I think there much larger problem with VW's informational interface. Everybody in my office struggles mightily against the lack of legibility of information displayed in the dialogue boxes. Many of the individuals in my firm are over 40. I consistently find myself helping people who are having difficulties reading/finding/seeing tiny text in obscure dialogue boxes. Mind you, we are working with super large monitors, and the folks in question have reading/computer glasses. However, there is no ability to adjust the default font or font size. Dialogue box font sizes appear on screen to be below 8 point type. I find this lack of attention to the fundamentals of universal design, somewhat astonishing. Does anybody else have this problem? While computer programmers and work-forces in the early 20's may have no problems, an older generation of tech users, is certainly struggling. A UI interface that improves these fundamentals would almost certainly help people learn the program better.
  19. so i guess there is no answer to this question. Should this be submitted as a bug then?
  20. Bumping my question.... (I use my bumps sparingly)
  21. Resolve Note Conflict Dialogue Box. I am having a similar problem with the Resolve Note Conflict Dialogue Box. While I kind of concur with some of the findings above, I might not use such harsh language. :-) Does anybody know what causes this box to appear and how to resolve it? Is this a bug? What is happening when this dialogue box appears? If I am the only person working on this project, who or what is changing it? Thx
  22. I probably did something wrong. I am not super experienced with scripts. I do appreciate all the help!
  23. Hmmm. I thought I did this right. Pat I took your code, and copied it to a txt file. Then I tried to import the script. However I get an error message. Marissa, your Marionette node, however, did the trick. I was able to select lines greater than .001" and less than .5" and then delete them. Wound deleting tens of thousands of objects without changing the appearance of my equipment plan, reducing the file size from over 130MB to about 30MB. Thank you!
  24. Apologies if this was already asked. I only skimmed through all the posts and responses. Does this function work with flattened design layer viewports?
  25. Thanks so much all for the help. I will check it out, and hopefully it will magically make my file work better. ha! :-)
