  1. Does VW disappear or gray out? Sometimes the application grays out and appears when a pop up dialogue box is open somewhere, possibly off screen. It might appear that VW is not responding.

if you are working on multiple monitors what happens when you unplug and gather all the windows to the primary computer display?  Can you quit (as opposed to force quit) using command + w?

if you haven’t already done so, you may want to turn off the confirm before auto save setting off. I vaguely remember having those sorts of issues a long time ago when I had that setting turned on.

  2. @GregG  Very elegant models.  I have a lot to learn design-wise.  I am curious how you organize the model....

Regarding your file....  Do you do all solids modeling or do you use walls + whatever it takes?    I like walls for a bunch of reasons, and I like them as parametric objects.  However....  they don't play well with solid modeling.  A few observations...

Walls + Solids, for example, cannot be joined into an autohybrid; and autohybrids are hard to edit once made.

If you add solids to the wall, then it becomes a nightmare to edit or move the wall.

    Wall features don't turn corners.

Mouldings objects are already hybridized, so they dont join up with other solid objects.

Do you put all the trim on classes or layers?

  3. I am interested in learning how folks organize architectural projects with lots of architectural woodwork and trim from a BIM perspective.

I tend to build and class the walls, by construction phase—New, Existing, Demolition. The trim is then developed as a set of add-on features.  I class woodwork according to whether it wants to be on or off in plan/RCP.  (A_Trim Doors, Wall, Ceiling Trim, Base, etc).  Ideally, walls would act as a container to help manage all this architectural detail.  But for whatever reason, they do not.  (Walls need some serious modernization.)

I’m curious to know how others would tackle a project like this.  The photo below describes the type of space I’m currently looking to document.

@Paolo Your Mouldings Plugin is a must for this type of work...   Thank you!

I'm curious how you could change the 3-D model and have changes appear in your drawings that you don't want. if you've updated the model, you'd want all of your drawings to be up-to-date as well.

It takes a lot of effort to keep 2d plan/rcp sheets free and clear of 3d junk. Adding 3d detail can wreak havoc on plans or have unintended consequences elsewhere in a set.

Going back through a set to make sure nothing was messed up is more tedious than switching out changed PDF sheets. (my opinion only).

  5. I was struggling with worksheets this morning, and discovered a VW Worksheet glitch.

VW 2024 makes an error when calculating lengths in a worksheet that is generated from a custom record.  Document Units in both files are set to Feet and Inches.  When I back saved the same file to VW2023 the error went away.

    • In the first spreadsheet (VW2024) , a 4" Base Plate displays as 4'-0"  (Not good!)  You can see the record format shows the correct length, but the worksheet miscalculates the units.
    • In the second spreadsheet (VW2023) the 4" Base Plate displays as 4" (Correct)
    • Screenshot of the custom Record Format and worksheet at the bottom of page.

  6. Thank you.  @M5d and @Tom W.

Interestingly.  VW2024 now includes an option for gap below leaf, which did not exist in VW2023.  For whatever reason, I can manage Windoor for windows, but I absolutely can't deal with Windoor for doors.  Something about that tool is profoundly counterintuitive at times.

Unfortunately VW currently can't even automatically draw the "X" in sections through rough timber members at the moment.

It drives me absolutely crazy that VW can't even draw an "X" in rough timber sections.  This can't be a difficult feature to add to the framing member object.

While we are at it, it is also mind-boggling that the wall framer command resorts to making geometry as 3D Solids instead of something parametric with top and bottom offset controls.

Conceptually, framing as an overlay to the wall tool (which can be manipulated separately as needs arise but could be updated/ linked) makes a little more sense than trying to keep everything contained in the wall.

To incrementally achieve fully framed walls, VW needs to develop a tool (or set of tools) that accomplishes framing.  VW has a horizontal framing member but no vertical framing counterpart, which is inexplicable and tragic.  The roadmap mentions "openings" as a new tool that will be developed, but the description is vague.  Conceptually, openings could be a critical element in creating a framing vocabulary.  (Horizontal members, Vertical Studs/Posts + Openings -- Think of the infinite BIM possibilities...)

The mullion tool  (which few people probably use) could form the basis for a "to be developed" Stud/Post Tool.  The Stud/Post Tool should have a few profile shape options, like LG Metal Studs and 2 x sizes.  There should be options for some connections and data regarding fasteners.  Most importantly, the tool could integrate top/bottom offsets.

Once developed, there should be a way to link the horizontal and vertical framing elements, like in the structural member tool. The problem is that VW is too "plan-focused," and all of this connection needs to happen in a vertical plane.  Maybe create a wrapper of some sort to contain all the elements).

Just some thoughts with only a half cup of coffee this morning.

  8. It would be nice to have a Register, Grill, Diffuser Tool.  Ideally this tool would work vertically in walls, and horizontally at the ceiling / floor plane.  The coding doesn't seem difficult, especially since louvers are baked into the window tool.

I am able to make a supply air register using the window tool.

Is there a way to make vertical louvers semi-parametrically?  Does anybody have any interesting workarounds? It would be good to create a version like this...
