    NAS Users

I would like to buy a RAID Network Attached Storage. Are there any users out there that can share their experience? I've been considering a Synology DS710+ and just want to make sure that I don't run into problems with my VW files on the network. I had bad experience with a LaCie Gigabit attached drive and swore I will not go back to LaCie. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
This is less of a review but more of a question. I've tried this script and I continue to get an error as shown. Would the fact that the test file is in metrics be the issue?

    Database CAPITALS

@ericjhberg Really. Just because that's the way it has been doesn't mean that it should always be! ;-)!

    Slab Style Worksheet

Working on building a worksheet where clients and users will see the composition of the slab styles that will be used in Hardscapes. I've managed to create in the attached just such a thing but have run into a little difficulty. When using a function to get the thickness of a component it is adding all of the components regardless of which slab they are a part. The attached file has our slabs and the worksheet with the cells in question. My vulnerability is Worksheets and I'm learning more every day but I really could use some help on this one. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated! Have a great weekend! Slab Styles.vwx

    Existing Tree Tool

One of our users runs into this issue from time to time where after placing an existing tree and editing several of them the tool locks up as shown below. In the tool itself all options are missing. and the object info palette is missing other things. The only way out of this to close the file and exit VW. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Drainage networks

    Totally agree as well!
  6. @Wesley Burrows One of the options is to set ranges and assign colors for that. How to make that appear in a schedule or key for that particular view could be handled a couple of ways. One that comes to right off the top of my head would be simple fills of the matching colors. To be automated you could rely on the old trick of making a viewport at a really large scale to have the color from the visualization to show up. Hope this helps.

    Worksheet Automation

I'm working on a worksheet that has to pull data from existing parametric objects and various records attached to smart objects like borders and site models. I've been able to create a cells that pull information such as project name and project address from the Titleblock Manager yet I can't seem to crack the code on pulling the "Site Model" Cut, Fill, Net C&F Volumes. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

    Worksheet Automation

@Pat Stanford Thanks. I will give this a go.
  9. Coming to this very late @VvierA but I have used this to demonstrate to clients, meaning the other design firms that I train and support, how they can use it for creating different displays for various data embedded in imported shape files to illustrate land use, density etc. I for one have loved using it.
  10. @Kerschbaumer Depending on the type of work you do and how complex your jobs are you may want to spring for some training on using the 3D tools. They can be intimidating and at times frustrating and the last thing you want to do is become frustrated and give up. My experience is that you may experience a steep learning curve at first but things come quickly after. Also don't expect your sections and details to have all things directly from the Wall, Slab and all other styles. You may need to "draft" in the annotation space other materials and fasteners to get the exact look you are going for. I think VW Architect is ideally suited to your very type of work. It's been my experience that, with Landscape Architecture, that going into commercial design we are really pushing the envelope on the softwares capabilities. I strong encourage you make the move!
  11. @Tamsin Slatter would this alter the coordinates for the original Background information? I would assume that @sragan will have to send there information back to the other consultants. @sragan are your files on the same layer? If not are they the same layer scale? Check these elements. You should be able to select the referenced architecture and in the OIP input coordinates that are close to where the background resides.

    B&W 2D Plant Symbols

Here is one way to make two different presentations of the same plant symbols. Use the "Data Visualization" settings for the viewport and adjust the fills for the plant symbols to only show the canopy and no fill. Save those settings and you will be able to either enable or disable the data visualization or select different save settings. Good luck!

    SITE MODEL NOT WORKING

Lets address the performance issue first. I have found that changing the scale from 1:100 to a larger scale can help in speed. One thing to keep in mind is what will your final presentation scale be. If you are going to be presenting at 1:500 I would make that my layer scale for all layers. I don't know what interval you are using for the contours but you may want to change the detail here as well. For your work flow I generally work in top/plan and only switch to 3D to see what impacts my changes have on the model. If your shape shown above is a building I would sue the massing model and turn on the use as site modifier when setting this up. Hope this helps.

Plant tag alignment and rotated plans

With VW 2019 you no longer need to use the default plant tags of old! Use data tags and even free yourself from the tyranny of circles or hexagons by making a custom data tag for plants and more.

    Drawing Setup

@hans0 One other thing to add. If you are doing planning on large scale projects you can also take advantage of Shape Files exported from GIS to create your backgrounds, topo and building massing studies. As for the MrSiD format. I remember using these with Autodesk Map2001i or something like that and they have a great compression ratio but as it has a patent it is proprietary. Depending on your Operating system you can find ways to convert these to other formats. You may loose the coordinates but at the very least you will be able to use them with Vectorworks. Best of luck and contact me if you have other questions about switching to Vectorworks.

    Symbols with embedded Marionette

So I want to create a series of symbols that have Marionette wrappers embedded within them. The marionette wrapper would take data from an attached record defining the shape and depth of the symbol. By doing this we can have one symbol that is for all telecom hand holds and by changing the records the marionette wrapper would change the shape and depth of the symbol to match. We could then have one standard top view for a legend but on dimensional control plans we could show the accurate size and have a worksheet that quantifies all the hand holes by size. Not sure if all this made sense but the is the gist of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 0485 services symbols.vwx

    Importing DWG Files

I'm sure some of you have already come across this issue but I thought I would share my recent experience with importing DWG files. I've been doing this a while and have never come across this issue. While importing a DWG file I kept getting this strange result of most everything coming in as extruded objects. I went back to a DWG clone software and discovered that the offending objects all had a thickness assigned to them. Once I set the thickness to zero and imported again the issue was resolved.

    Site Model Interpolation

@lisag My experience with digital site terrain modeling goes way back and across multiple platforms and programs including early version of Civil 3D, Map and Bentley Microstation GeoPak (sp?). All had to have breaklines added to control these irregularities in interpolating between contours. Admittedly VW still have a long way to go to get anywhere close to where Civil 3D is now but you will never be able to this in Revit not to mention planting plans, site analysis, and irrigation design. Since the slope between the contours varies considerably across your design I would address this with the Grade Tool changing the mode to modify site and enter the desired elevations and let the program do the rest. Good luck in your search.

    modify proposed contour oddity

@jnr I have had this issue in 2018 and to a lesser degree in 2019. I have given up on VW creating smooth proposed contours and regularly draft contour site modifier objects to get the desire result. It could be that there are some points that are corrupting the site model.

Hardscape with slope to stair object no slope

@Chickpea The other side of this is that you are modeling the real situation and in the field you would either have to warp the slab or have a riser with variable height. To account for this you may have to have two hardscapes to make the warp or at some future point VW should add grips to hardscapes, just like walls, that allow for the user to twist a hardscape. Good job for a newcomer.
  21. @ericjhberg You are crazy! This is way beyond me. I'm too old school. I set up my viewport, even it a project needs multiple viewports to cover a site, and get every just as I want it and then make duplicates to create grading or planting etc... When will you have this done so I can join you in the 21st Century?

    Create Floor Marionette Node

You left out the part about curving walking paths or driveways and how annoying it is that they only grade in a straight line between two points and not along the arc. But you can't do this with a roof either. Did you try using the "Save Hardscape" which saves it under hardscapes which you can then drag and drop onto the hardscape you want to change? Of course while testing this out it appears I have something wonky happening with rendering in top/plan where hatches are not showing up correctly.
  23. @livespace josha When doing two versions I assume you have layer naming that controls this. Isn't it easy enough to filter the layers by name and confirm that you classes are or layers are controlled that way?
  24. rowbear97

    Create Floor Marionette Node

@ericjhberg Funny that you use this as well. One of my clients uses this almost exclusively, and often to my dismay, because you loose the functionality of the hardscape as a site modifier and as a way to create takeoffs. With that add on top the data tag options and you really can't beat it. How are you guys getting along with the fires? Our thoughts are with you. Oh! It's 40 degrees as a high today and windy as heck!
