  1. It's basically an electronic item. So there's a case around the whole thing (unfortunately made up of mutiple surfaces). Rendering the model in hidden line rendering shows exactly what I want. Essentially I want a 3D outline of said model. Don't care about all the intricate things inside.
  2. I've been sent a complicated STEP file for an item. I want to simplify it, but to be completely honest I haven't played around much with 3D modelling. I usually work on entertainment stuff. It's made of NURBS surfaces however it is overly complicated. The long and short of it is that I want to have a 3D solid that is essentially a replica of the render when in hidden line mode. I don't care about anything else that is inside etc... Is there a way to create that? I tried adding all solids, but it comes up with an empty solid warning. Similar when making a big box around it and trying to subtract the NURBS surfaces from it (like a mould). Any tips greatly appreciated.
  3. In reply to my own question - I've worked it out. I didn't realise I was mapping the texture in perimeter mode. Plane mode and the attribute mapping tool makes this a lot easier. In reply to my own question - I've worked it out. I didn't realise I was mapping the texture in perimeter mode. 4. What is the best process for lining up graphics on objects? I have a 2m wide, 1m tall object (depth isn't important, but the object is an extrude), that I want to apply a texture to that is of equal size (created in Illustrator, so can be resized as necessary). I cannot seem to work out an easy way of having the texture centered on the object. It could be how I'm applying it, or it could be how I'm exporting it. Any tips? (Also, even if it is a quarter size and scaled up 4x it doesn't seem to line up)
  5. Thanks very much both of you. I thought I'd done it before in VW, just couldn't remember how. I mainly use Spotlight so don't often need tools like the offset tool!
  6. In Vectorworks, if you wanted to create a square which has another square cut out of the middle, leaving a 5mm wide "border", it's quite easy. The way I do it is: Make a square (e.g. 100mm x 100mm) Duplicate the square and scale by 0.9 Use the clip function to get the desired result The steps above are shown in the following images: That's easy enough. You can then extrude or do whatever you need. In this case, I've been provided with a polyline. Let's say it looks like the following image: If I wanted to do the exact same process as above, to essentially make a duplicate of the shape with the lines "pulled in" or by 5mm each, how would I go around doing it? In Photoshop, they have a tool that allows you to "Contract" a selection, as per the following images: How would I go around doing this in Vectorworks? What methods/tools should I be looking at? The polyline I need to apply this to is quite specific, so it's quite hard to redraw. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Many thanks. Worked a treat.
  8. Hi, I work in the lighting design industry and use VW for the designs. At the moment I seem to be making a mess of my document by just copying and pasting the drawings of the lights onto loads of different layers. What I tried to do was make each of these a symbol, however because they all have text, I seem to be having trouble. I can easily create the symbol with the text labels (with default text in them), however when I add ths symbol and change the text, I must be editing the symbol rather than that particular instance of it because the text is changed for every symbol of that type. maybe there is an easier way to do this? Thanks
