I have not found much information in the book about the use of the User Boundary Class under the DTM. I have contours that trace across buildings. What is the best way to get a boundary to keep contours out of areas? I have noted that connecting all 3d loci that make up a ditch/swale with a 3d polygon and moving a copy of the 3d polygon into the User Boundary Class will make the contours trace the ditch/swale more correctly. Also, are 3d loci that are in invisible classes still used in the DTM? Thanks in advance for any responses.et

The Black and White option under Document Preferences is OK. The script we run to print turns that option on, prints, and then returns you to color. We have tried printing with both black and white backgrounds to see if that made any difference. I am now thinking it is not a preference. For a day or two, my colleague was able to print solids. However yesterday he had some prints without the fills again. I don't know what could be causing it.It seems to happen randomly. et

nope. all objects are just simple circles or squares with fills. we have been using a script called something like print black and white (or something to that effect) that we bought a while back. ( i can't remember who from, probably julian c). regardless, mine will print fine and the others seem to not. i was merely wondering if there was a setting i am overlooking that would cause such a problem. thanks, et

We have several people with files that contain objects with solid fills. When they print the drawing, the fills are empty. However, when I print the same file from my machine, the solid fill plots.The phenomenon has just started recently.This would suggest there is a setting of some sort that is awry. We generate post script files and send them to the plotter via the internet. However, the problem is in or prior to the generation of the plot file. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I zoomed way out and 2 out of 3 of the missing lines reappeared on the screen. However they still failed to print. et

All the classes are visible, and none of the polys are grouped with anything. Two of the missing polys are in the same class and layer as the one that does show up. There is another that is in a different class, but it's class is on as well. et

I have a map in which some utilities are drawn as 3d polygons. A layer link has been set up to bring an extended road into view. The road comes in but not all of the utilities. The confusing part is that some of the missing utilities are in the same class and layer as the ones that do show up. On top of it all, sometimes the line will appear on the screen until I scroll or zoom. Then it disappears. I assumed it was a screen problem and it would print, but the lines didn't print either. Anyone have ideas as to why some will show on the Layer link and others won't? et

NEVERMIND! EXCEL will handle the same file FINE! The problem is on Appleworks' end. I had to try it on another machine that has Excel, and it imported just fine.

I have had problems exporting a worksheet into spread sheets. After exporting them, I import them and the data comes in all in one row and multiple columns. It is as if the final column in the worksheet isn't registering a return. I tried importing them into a word processing document and none of the data registers the return there either. Anyone have the same problem or any Ideas? VW 9.5Mac OS 9.1Using Appleworks to do the Importing(Filemaker Pro didn't work importing either)

I have a small building with walls that have a cmu texture. Each of the 4 sides have windows but only one of the windows renders correctly. The others show the block pattern inside the window. I checked to make sure the windows are "in wall" according to the obj info pallette and they are ok. The window that works is no different from the others, no changes were made to make them any different. Anyone have an idea? Thanks in advanceEric

I am trying to extract the z value from a 3d symbol for later use. However, the GetSymLoc only uses (name,x,y). And I haven't had any luck finding anything else that will get it for me. Anyone know how can I get the z? Thanks Eric Tweed

While I can't offer any help, I thought I would write in to show that you are not alone in wanting the circle. The "Kind is arc" does not help me any because the circles are drawn in the same class and color as the other arcs that I am trying to separate them from. I hope to see "kind is circle" in a future release. Eric Tweed

From time to time I use MicroSpot as well but I have never tried to plot upside down. I am responding to see why you wish to do so, and maybe there is some workaround we can figure out. Many moons ago I was having to plot using something else and I had to flip my drawings over to get it to print w/ the borders coming out right. It was a pain with multi layered drawings so I don't suggest that. Eric Tweed

I have a drawing with a symbol that is repeated many times throughout the drawing. I have made a database that shows all the symbols with their x and y coordinates. Eventually I will need to export the data into another program, but now I realized I need to go back and have each symbol exported with an individual name. While the symbol can keep its identity, I want to make a field in the symbol's record format that will give each symbol another name. Question: Is there a way to do this for all of the symbols at once and avoid having to go one by one naming them? I had thought maybe something like "count +1" might work if I knew where to go to do it. Also, I know how to get the center of an object (xcenter, ycenter), but if I were to want to have the data for the ends of an open polygon or line, is there such a command? I noticed the missing "C" and wondered if that was what I had missed the first time, but after I looked at the address that was copied from the earlier post and what was actually sent (in my outbox) I noticed that the "C" was there and everything should have gone through Okay. I don't have an explanation. Thanks for the suggestion though. Eric

Frank, I am unable to get an email to you. I sent the file and it came back saying it was undeliverable. I next sent a small test email to there to see if it may have been a problem w/ the attached file but it came back as well. The postmaster says there is not a "Nemetshek.net" server. So I thought I must have spelled it wrong. But I looked back in the out box and it was spelled correctly. (actually I used the cut and paste from the posting above) It seems odd that anything would change a spelling along the line but that seems to be what your mailserver is seeing. Anyway, it seems I am unable to get an email to you. I will go talk to our IT guy and see if he has any half rational explanation. Eric Tweed

Using the user boundary class and running the update seems to have changed the DTM somewhat but it still crosses outside of the user boundary. At least I am not getting the error message though. Do you have any further suggestions on how to keep it inside the boundary? et

What happened to the Set User Boundary in v8? Does the Border function do the same? I have many survey points following a road that curves and I need to avoid triangulating accross the voids. I tried setting a border in and using it as a "user boundary but then got the error message: Could not find NNA_DTM_Hidden_Record." I had gotten this message earlier and posted it here before but have not gotten it worked out. I ran a DTM on a copy of the file that didn't have the border set in it and it gave me the contours, but they were triangulated all over the file. Eric Tweed g4 w/ ~300Mb given to VW9

While trying to generate a DTM, The error message "Error: Could Not Find NNA_DTM_Hidden_Record." I saw that someone else had the same problem in the Peach Ease Archives, but when I tried the posted possible solution of copying out the data to another file and trying again, it just gave the same error. My data came from a survey file and actually generated a DTM for me. While I was trying to stake a road, VW crashed (Error 2) and I haven't been able to even get the DTM back. Anybody have suggestions? et

I am using VW 9.0.1 and like the new options for classes. However, while selecting objects using the lasso, I am getting greyed objects along w/ objects in the active class. Using the box selection does not yield the same. Anyone else had the same problem or got ideas? et

We have a 3d drawing of a building that is layer linked in into different views. The layer link shows most of the 2d objects but does not link the text. All missing text is in the same class as the other 2d objects. Anyone have an idea as to why the text does not show up? ET

Andrew is right, by 1st dragging and then pressing option right before releasing the mouse, it duplicates. Thanks. NNA, I do appreciate the addition of the + under this circumstance. Am I crazy or was it different in VW8?

My Basic recommendation is practice and patience. I knew no other CAD before MiniCad (now VectorWorks) and it took me a few weeks to get the hang of everything. One of the Best things I feel that helped me was creating my own Workspace that allowed me to use my right hand for the mouse, and put the most used tools on the left side of the keyboard for my left hand. I simplified the arrangement in a way that made sense to me. Ex. I made "T" text, "S" single line, "D" double line, "R" rotate ... and you can personalize it according to your needs. After going into workspace editor, be sure to check "create a new workspace" so nothing original gets undone. From there it is relatively easy to figure out how to drag your tools to the places you want them.

After more experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Miller is mostly right (Although I am on a Mac). I had gotten accustomed to pressing the option key and letting go before letting up on the mouse. Now that I am in VW-9, I will just have to get used to holding the option key down until the task is finished. If anyone could post a reply verifying that the release order affects this function, (Especially on Mac) I would be grateful and will rest easier.

From time to time, the abilty to hold "option" and drag to make a duplicate stops working. It goes in spurts and becomes very aggrivating. Anyone else had this problem?
