This has a happy ending - successful installation. Since I went through some pain to get it done I thought I would share what I went through.
* Installed new retail copy of windows 7 64 bit on 64 bit processor new machine.
* workstation graphics - ATI firegl 7600
* put in install dvd, let autorun pop up, hit "install"
* got error message:Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vectorworks2010\Vectorworks2010.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
* did some searches online for "side-by-side" and VC80.MFC among others. Hit up this forum and the KB a few times.
* based on what I read, I installed C++ distributable 2008 x86 and x64, and installing the service pack 4.
* tried multiple restarts. No luck.
* based on something else I read, I put the install DVD back in, ignored the autorun pop-up, and right-clicked on install. I "ran as administrator" the program. Agreed to overwrite files.
* At the end of this install, I was up and running. No problems.
* installed service pack 4 again....no problems.
* Wrote this.
Hope this helps someone.
Best regards,
