  1. Sorry if this a silly question but I couldn't find the answer. I am using VW 2020 architect. Is there a way to add a 3D structural header to a window (aside from actually modeling it)? I understand you'll will want to specify its depth, but maybe there's a framing module that will add standard size ones? Or an option in the window's dialog parameters? I've made the mistake of installing clerestory windows too high up close to a roof eave. Having an header automatically above windows would remind me of that necessary gap. Thank you
  2. Thank you very much, and Twinmotion is free right now. I'll give it a try.
  3. Hello, I am evaluating Lumion (which now has this great livesync) and Cinema 4D so to get amazing renderings and maybe walk-troughs. From the 2 latest Demo versions I have these issues and wanted to hear your opinion about them. Lumion demo: Almost always the imported VW model is way far off somewhere in the horizon. I understand, modifying the origin in VW will help but it seems finicky. I already have every texture assigned in VW, but when I select a wall with a particular texture so to replace it with a Lumion one, it only selects that wall, not the other walls with the same texture (or color). Is this how it is supposed to be? I recall trying this with the old Bryce 3D and it would select all the elements which came from same color or texture. Also, have almost no nice textures to choose from and test (but this is due to the Demo version). Moving around (I know, you can use the W A S D etc keys plus shift) seems not very smooth and natural. Can't you just pan and zoom and rotate with the ease of VW? Or is just me not knowing the software yet? Cinema4D demo: It is beautifully integrated with VW and the imported model comes right away at the center of the window (as it should...) and with the same textures already assigned in VW and maybe lights. But the rendered image (without any in depth setting changes because I am too new to really understand the multitude of options) seems identical to the Renderworks one more or less. Would knowledge of C4D make for much more realistic renderings than Renderworks, or because they share the ray trace engine, you will only get better libraries, better mapping options and natural elements but the overall photo-realism of the rendering is similar and less convincing than Lumion (or Vray, but that's not an option yet I understand)? Thanks for any advice

    Key Notes

Hi, As I transitioned from VW Architect 2008 to 2013, the major issue I had, was that once saved some of my existing files-templates with key notes and legend, into 2013 versions, the key notes go crazy! 1-I used to put the key notes and their automatic legend into the annotation portion of the view-ports in the sheet layers. However now the legend appears outside of the annotation environment. It just floats outside on the sheet layer. 2- the legend used to read the keynotes within that layer. Now the legend read notes from the whole file! 3- the legend size and formatting is crazy and not adjustable. 4- I tried to copy and paste keynotes and legends from a file to another and they change, issues 1-3 happen again. I noticed that now on the keynotes object info you can specify "default legend" or this and that but it only helped to a point. Help! How can I have the same keynotes tool smooth and clear experience as before? I tried converting to new notes, a lot of mess. I hate to re-type all of my standard notes.. Thank you VW 2013 Architect Renderworks Windows
  6. Hi, Can you add/modify the default menu of options that appear when you use the right mouse button? This is with a mac. Thank you
  7. Thank you both, glad it has been simplified!
  8. Sorry for the very dumb question. I just received a copy of VW Architect-Renderworks 2012 (I was still using 2008) and started playing around without studying it much honestly. I noticed a big improvement in its rendering speed but I didn't see the Radiosity option under view-rendering (now that maybe it is viable for the first time, given the rendering speed...) Is it hidden somewhere else? Thank you!
  9. Good point Cipes. This is always true unless you use software that has all the typ. building components already built in requiring less modeling effort. Thanks for the video Starling!
  10. Thank you guys! we'll try that but I suppose that's not different than extracting sections and elevations from a VW model, which still requires some cleaning up.
  11. A friend of mine made a 3D model in SU and asked me to illustrate it (notes, dimensions, title block etc) in VW. The 3D model-renderings looked very nice but she had trouble extracting clean vectorial sections and elevations. First she saved them as dxf, cleaned them up in Acad and then I imported them in VW. On top of that I had to play with the units to scale it correctly. Does anybody know of a better workflow exchange from SU to VW? Thank you for any advice.
  12. Hello guys, I know this has been discussed ad nauseam, so please be patient. Does VW Architecture 11 with its new 2d-3d integration, allow for a better bim-ability (from a drafting perspective, not data)? There are lesser programs focused on the single family residential that allow you in short time to get rooms with trims, foundations, sq,ft, schedules, exterior interior elevations and detailed sections with windows trims easily customizable, many cabinets and real time 3d rendered views that are readily utilizable for construction documents (not cleaning up and addition of lines necessary...) Up to now, I've struggled with VW in trying to achieve all of that. I don't want to switch and also as an architect, many of my custom projects are the modern types with curved surfaces, cut-outs etc that I don't think I could model with those other software, tailored to the more traditional builder-type of homes. So does VW11 come closer to the efficiency of those other CAD (while retaining its flexibility that I love)? Without having to draw the profile of items like a wall baseboard and extruding it along a path etc? Or do patchwork of a roof to make it more custom than the program wants? I understand that now walls do show components in section but the roof doesn't? Thank you and if you could please give me specific examples of that. VW 2008 Architect Renderworks
  13. Greetings, which will you say, are the main benefits of VWA2010 in facilitating BIM workflow? I am still on 2008 and looking at upgrading. Yes I have read the list of new tools but none seemed addressing my main concern. Even though I am a longtime VWA user, and always modeled everything, I just cannot get a smooth way to keep 2d and 3d together. Especially when I deal with complex roofs, at different levels (i.e. clerestory roofs), intersecting circular walls with roofs or elaborated elevations or when I wish to cut walls and get their components too (which I think now VW does). And when you render in hidden lines mode for elevations, intersections don't show their lines or too many etc. Simple things like that, I know are done very easily for small residential projects even in builder-type CAD like Chief architect or Softplans and seems cumbersome to me (could be me, I hope). Does the new 2010 really allow for BIM interaction, a la say Archicad or Revit are publicized to? And I am only referring to the geometry part, not the data yet. I've been reading a lot on NNA literature and reviews about how VW allows for a more design oriented, flexible BIM compared to those other CAD, but how exactly? I know this is a sort of philosophical question too. Thank you for any insight, I realize this is not a direct tech question.
  14. So, I'm and architect and I've been using VW for many years light commercial and residential. A friend of mine, drafter-designer, mentioned she's been using Chief Architect for a while and she loves how easy is to get elevations, sections, etc from the plans plus very nice rendering. (I've seen them too). I love VW however I find the interaction of 2d and 3d not to be so easy (for me at least) when it comes to complex elements (aside from windows, walls, basic roofs etc)and for sure I am frustrated with Renderworks quality or actually ratio of quality/time to render at best settings. I often export to Bryce 3D to get nice raytracing renderings. Has anyone here have had any experience with Chiefarchitect or even Softplan and what's your opinion? Are they too "light" as CAD for high-end architectural work? I know they cost about the same as VW Architect. Thank you
  15. Hi guys, Remember when we used layer-links to get a model of all the floors of a building, stacked at the proper z height to view it, render it? How do you do that now? I know viewports have replaced LLks but I don't seem to be able to stack them in a sheet layer? Thank you
  16. Greetings, Is there a way to show the wall (or automated roof planes for the matter) detailed components with a 3D section or section viewport? In other words, usually I get the basic wall outlines from those sections and then I have to paste/cover in 2D the sheetrock, plywood, stud lines, stucco, insulation etc. But in reality I enter such info (except insulation) when drawing walls in 2D with styles so it would be very efficient to be able to retain that info in vertical view with the graphic attributes (line weights, hatches, patterns) I choose. Simple outline work of for a building section perhaps, but it would be great to start the detailing directly. I am still in VW 2008 Architect so I might not be aware of the latest. Regards
  17. Thanks, Eoin, and Vincent for your tip too. Those are very good suggestions. And no I wasn't aware of the convert Model tool. I will test it and also try Artlantis. Regards, David
  18. Thank you guys, so Artlantis will update to the changes done in VW? regards David
  19. Hi guys, I've always used VW for both the 2D documentation, and the 3D models using VW tools for presentations. Lately I noticed/heard that Sketchup and other 3D modeling software are more intuitive to model and easier to edit than VW. So, for complex projects, not a boxy or ranch style house, do you still use VW for the 3D-presentation part (aside from using the basic 3D as a BIM) or do you employ other software and if so which ones? Thank you!
