  1. Peter & Ray,

I have attached the file. I initially thought that the selection of "parquet" may have been the issue, but I tried again with "Wood-Arcitex Oak" which I then specified as plank & got the same result. Thanks for looking at this.

  2. Hi all,

I am getting a line across my oak floorboards that I can't seem to get rid of. When I edit my "wood flooring oak parquet 07" I have selected "floorboards" as my replication type and I can move the line in question by adjusting the plank length from between "1-10." Adjusting the offset & strips doesn't make any difference, the line still exists? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  3. VW,

Is it possible to have some indication as to the length of time a rendering will take, similar to an download/upload? Maybe based on an initial sampling? As I am writing this I am awaiting a rendering with no idea as to how long it will take or what the quality will be. This is extremely frustrating.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  4. Peter & Rossford,

I had similar success converting polygons to 3D Polys>setting the Elevation for Each then creating the site model.

Peter, I am curious about the following portion of your original response:

"The next step, before actually creating the Site Model is to run the AEC>Terrain>Simplify 3d Polygons command. "

    Under AEC>Terrain I have only (5) options:

    1) Create Site Model

    2) Filter 3D Polygons

    3) Validate 3D Data

    4) Site Model Section

    5) Send to Surface

There is no "Simplify Polygons" command.

    Is this command somewhere else?

Any thoughts on controlling/moving minor contour intervals generated by the program?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  5. Peter & Rosford,

I had some success with Peter's method. Copy>Paste in Place in ascending order & using the Survey Input 2D Contours to 3D Polys>Create 3D Loci but this was time consuming as so many of the contours needed to be retraced/connected due to the retaining walls, etc.

What I did instead was Copy>Paste in Place or retrace the major contours (10'-0" interval). Then 2D Contours to 3D Polys>Create 3D Loci>Terrain>Create Site model & set my minor contour interval to 2'-0" the same as the original survey. I have an 80'-0" change in elevation over a 3 acre site.

The result was very near the original survey and certainly adequate for me to cut some major sections through.

If I can get 3D loci to appear in the minor contour interval I can simply drag those Loci to align over the existing survey and have a very good result.

I will experiment with the Convert to 3D Polys method tomorrow and report back.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  6. Hi All,

I just received a .dwg survey that I have imported into VW2009. It is a hilly site w/many retaining walls/structures that the contours die into. It is not possible to use the AEC>Survey Input>2D Polys to 3D Contours command as the contours as drawn by the site engineer were not drawn in ascending or descending manner as explained in the VW Tutorial manual.

I am trying to avoid retracing the existing contours from low to high & this still doesn't resolve how to deal with the contour interruptions. Any thoughts on how to deal with creating the terrain model & the contour discontinuity would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  7. Dave,

Setting the appropriate camera view is not an issue. I am using the camera in Top/Plan view not Top view. Not sure what you mean by, "A lot of times I double-click the camera to set the view to the camera's view."

When I double-click the camera it generates the view at a remote location on the design layer that I am in. When I select my "Saved View" it generates the correct camera view without a problem. However, I can zoom in & out & select objects within the rendered image. Is their a way to make the the "Saved View" a static image?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  8. Ray,

Please take me thru that process as the "Saved view" that appears includes what is visible on my design layer sheet. Should I simply zoom in on the rendered image in the design layer & create that as the "Saved View". Ideally I want to link the rendered camera view with the saved view... where do I create that link?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  9. To all,

I am presently working in a design layer with a camera dropped in. From the OIP, I select "Display Camera View" at which point the rendering appears at some arbitrary point on the design layer that I am in.

There has got to be a better way to do this. Please pass along a best practice for directing a rendering to a specific location.

Additionally, when exporting the rendered image should I be using the "marquee" option from the "export area" screen??This seems rather imprecise/inefficient.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  10. All,

Thanks for the profile info. I am presently experimenting with them. "Extrude Along Path" is a new command to me. It seems a bit quirky. For instance: (1) it deletes the source profile, (2) if the trim profile is say 3/4"thick, then my offset rectangle(for baseboard moulding) needs to be offset from the wall 3/8"( so the command chooses the centerline?), (3) direction of profile (front/back) takes a little experimentation.

Most importantly, and this is where I need some assistance to "stretch" my new profiles the "3D Reshape tool" does not allow me to lock into the X or Y plane. Also where is the mitre tool? When placing individual pieces of crown at inside/outside corners this would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  11. Ray,

I will further search the library. I meant Detailing\Tool Sets\Lineal Material where I said "lineal elements tool bar" sorry for lack of clarity.

As for the moldings are there stock profiles that can be used and/or modified or am I to draw them, extrude them & miter them as you mention?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  12. jeffroyer & others,

As a new user to VW2009 in general and RW in particular, I have a few questions:

    1) The oak floor texture in the bedroom image you had attached previously: Is this within the VW textures? I f so where? Also did you draw the floor as individual planks or is this a simple flat surface?

    2) For lineal elements; crowns & base moldings are these simply drawn, extruded, & dropped into place? The lineal elements tool bar seems to be useful for details, rather than model elements?

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

  13. Wes,

I have always annotated the 2D drawings as per your image and you are correct in that it provides a high degree of clarity for the contractor. As I am switching over from Autocad R-14, I am trying to build the 3D model accurately for presentation & CD's.

That is why I am trying to get a handle on some best practices for building the model. I can always resort to 2D line work "old skool. Do you have any thoughts on where dropped girders/soffits should be draw in the 3D model? Its own design layer where I set the delta Z? Or as I mentioned in the prior post, should it be part of the floor above and then dropped down?

    Thanks, Jeremy

  14. Islandmon & Wes,

Thanks for your input. Islandmon, I can't comment on the links you forwarded as they could not be found/opened. But you have likely hit upon the issue I am looking to address.

I am drawing a simple shed roof for a porch on a single family home with a dropped girder. Likely a triple 2x8 packed & trimmed out. So I would like to attach data/record to this object.

Additionally, what is the best practice layer wise for locating this object. Do I draw it in a class on my first floor layer and raise it into place or create it as part of my second floor deck?

I haven't checked the forum list yet as this has likely been addressed, but will do next.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy
