  1. Maybe I'm missing a config setting?

I'm working in top plan view, zoomed in to a part of the floor plan. (Unified View is on. All design layers are the same scale.) When I change to a different design layer, the view centers on the page and I have to scroll around and find the part of the plan I was working on.

Is there a way to change layers without moving the view???

(Hoping this is just another 'duh' moment.)

  2. Just curious. Does everybody else have trouble finding anything in this forum? I searched for "color palette" (without the quotes) and got 80+ pages of random, unrelated results.

And then I googled "Vectorworks color palette" (without quotes) and I got lots of useful results.

Not meaning to be a grouch, but isn't it time to update the forum?

  3. In case you still haven't found the answer, maybe if we go through the steps it will strike a chord. I know this sounds pedantic, but maybe your answer is in here somewhere. Just trying to help.

First check the following folder to make sure you have palettes in the right place:

    \Applications\Vectorworks 2015\Libraries\Defaults\Color Palettes.

You should have something like 35 .xml files there. If that's good then start a new document and click the fill color in the attribute palette. In the color selection palette, if you don't have the palette choices you want in theclick the tool button in the top right to open the Color Palettes Manager.

If you don't get the list of 35 palettes, then maybe you are pointed to the wrong location.

Then the next question would be whether you have changed the User Folders in the Preferences?

  4. Riall,

I tried but I see what you mean. If you choose tilt/turn window style and set 3D Open to say 45 degrees, you get the dash line for tilt, but you also get the swing. But not for awning or hopper styles.

  5. I've had some similar problems and was able to fix by using Text>Reconcile Notes. Sometimes callouts on one sheet become connected to a legend on another sheet, causing some mysterious behavior.

When you use the callout tool, check the Callout Tool Preferences and make sure "Default Legend" is selected instead of the legend for your current sheet.

  6. OK, I figured out a workaround. I added a column to my Sheet Index with the heading "Latest Rev No" and used this formula:

    =('Drawing Border - Universal'.'__lastissue')

What I discovered is that 'Drawing Border - Universal' is the name of my Sheet Border object. This must be a hard-wired name generated by VW. '__lastissue' is the field that gives me the most recent issue number. There is no corresponding field for revision numbers, so I might have to use the issue number tool instead.

Here is what the worksheet looks like: [img:left]https://www.dropbox.com/s/ca6uq3ssyx33f68/Screen%20Shot%202014-10-08%20at%203.07.41%20PM.png?dl=0[/img]

I get @ signs for sheets that have not been revised. I don't want to get phone calls asking what the @ sign means so I changed the formula to an IF statement that returns either a space instead:

    =IF((('Drawing Border - Universal'.'__lastissue')='@'), ' ', 'Drawing Border - Universal'.'__lastissue')

Here is what that looks like: [img:left]https://www.dropbox.com/s/3owi9p6cy2xgnqp/Screen%20Shot%202014-10-08%20at%203.18.57%20PM.png?dl=0[/img]

Seems to be working. Hope this helps someone.

  7. Thanks, Jonathan.

If this calls up sheet numbers from HFA-TBLK:

    =('HFA-TBLK'.'S_SheetNo_SN')

then how do I get :rDate from the sheet border?

And if there are multiple revisions on a sheet, which date would I get?

Not sure it matters, but I embedded text items for :rNo, :rDate and :rNote in my title block symbol, rather than using the 'Use Revision Block' option.

  8. Hey. I have a worksheet question.

When I revise a sheet, I select the sheet border and use the OIP to enter the revision number and date with a brief description. This info displays on my title block because I included rNo, rDate, and rNote in my title block symbol. I don't have to use the "Use revision block" option in the OIP, if that matters. Works great.

I created a Sheet Index on my cover sheet that lists sheet number, name and date, pulling the data from my sheet borders. Good start, but I need to add revision dates to this worksheet. Is this possible?

  9. Hi, all.

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to help me understand the latest best practice for issuing drawing revisions.

We use the 'revision date' record in our custom title blocks, but have never used the 'issue date' record because I'm not sure what it's for.

Currently we use a sheet date (which never changes once a sheet is issued) and revision dates for changes to each sheet. We often haven't bothered with flagging changes during design phases, but all changes after issuing for bids or construction are always marked with a revision flag and a cloud. We usually only re-issued the revised sheets, along with an updated sheet index with a matrix of revision dates.

But since our details and elevations are now generated from the 3D model, I'm curious about whether we should change our methods for flagging and issuing revisions.

Would we be culpable if we fail to flag one of the drawing changes that were generated from the model? Would it be wise to always issue complete sets? If so, does that change our responsibility to flag revisions?

Possibly an open-ended question, but I'm hoping there is someone in the group who is close to this issue?

    Thank you all,

    Bill

  10. Thanks for asking. We need a series of workflow tutorials on translating SU models to VW, fixing the segmented lines, applying textures, translating to parametric objects, etc. This could apply to whole buildings or smaller components like furniture, appliances, light fixtures, etc. that are abundantly available for SU but not so much for VW.

Jonathan Pickup, you are the BEST at this! I really appreciate the way you break your videos into short 3-5 minute segments. I bet you could write a whole book on this. I mean, think about how many architects model with Sketchup and translate to something else for construction drawings. Just a thought...

    Cheers,

  11. I was hoping SP4 would fix the "callout width" bug, but not so. Here's what's happening:

Before creating the callout, I adjust the settings to not retrieve notes from database and not to enter as keynote. I set the max width to 3". Then, as I'm about to make the first click to place the note, the dotted preview outline appears to be about the correct width. But when I finish creating the callout it is very very narrow. And each time it's a new random width but seems to always be less than 1/2". The default setting says it's supposed to be 3", but at least the object info palette tells me the actual created width. So I have to change the width for each callout by means of the object info palette.

Same on both of my Macs. I rebooted, but still no fix. Is this a known bug, or did I accidentally hit the RandomUnexplainedBehavior button?

  12. Surely I'm not the only one with this problem. My callouts won't insert as keynotes. The 'insert as keynote' box is checked in the callout preferences, but every callout has to be changed to a keynote in the OIP after I insert it.

Should I report this as a bug???

  13. Here's what I do:

? In Tools>Organization, create a sheet layer for each of your sheets. You probably already have this.

? In the Organization dialog box, select all of your sheet layers and click the Edit button at the bottom.

? You get an Edit Sheet Layer dialog box. Click the Page Setup button at the bottom.

? In the Page Setup dialog box, you might need to check the 'Choose size unavailable' box and select the sheet size you want. Then click the Printer Setup button, choose your printer, sheet size, and 'OK. This will configure all of your sheet sizes.

? Close all of those boxes and your sheet layers should be ready to print.

? If you are configured to Show Page Boundary then you can see where your drawing fits on the sheet. If I read your question correctly, it sounds like you print on pre-printed sheets that already have border and title block. Right?

  14. Update: I had tried deleting the callout and replacing it with a new one to match. That didn't work. I tried rebooting, repairing permissions, no good.

So then I deleted altogether the one keynote that started the problems and now the keynote legend sorts as designed and the gaps go away. Could one callout have caused this problem? I had looked at the xml file, but didn't see any problems in syntax. But maybe I didn't know what to look for?

  15. Thanks, Jim.

FYI, I'm getting another buggy problem in callouts. Can't tell if it's related. I added a new callout and it appeared on the keynotes list but the list rearranged itself. I double-clicked the list to open the Notes Manager, clicked the sort button, and the list in the Notes Manager re-sorted as desired. But when I closed the Notes Manager, the list in my design layer was not sorted and the callout I just added was not shown. There is a gap (a period) in its place.

[More detail: I'm doing keynotes numbered by the note description rather than 1-2-3. The note descriptions are spec sections, like '10 4413 A' and they need to sort sequentially. The database is project-specific and located in the same folder as the vwx file. The keynote legend is on a design layer and is referenced into viewports on 3 sheets. I add callouts in the sheet layer viewports. They all point to the same database and keynote legend.]

I confirmed that the 'Re-use Unused Positions' is checked, but it's apparently not working. When I click the 'Remove Gaps' button, the gap goes away. The new keynote does not show in the legend but is still in my viewport annotation. Double-clicking the callout shows that it is connected to the correct database file and the correct notes legend. Selecting that keynote in the Notes Manager does not give me the option to update, it does not show in the note manager keynote list.

Again, there is only one keynote legend and one database referenced in the drawing so it shouldn't be crossing streams with another database, right?

    Can anybody help?
