Modeling (or at mimimum, drawing) the rebar will get you a building permit around here as well, in case you decide to build within community expectations and financial institutions' guidelines.

For what it is worth, I'm a very new (and very enthusiastic) user and am having the same problems you describe with *any* kind of wall join in 2010. Unfortunately, I am so new to the VW software (yet having used Revit 09 and 10,ACAD Architecture,TurboCad,Cinema4D,Bricscad9 Pro,Rhino4, and others for years now..) that I don't quite know how to point to the problem clearly except that I've spent many hours looking at tutorials, links, making new files and now just about to try a re-install. Definitely frustrating. Wall join just does not seem to work as described in the "Getting Started" tutorial and un-does itself without warning or any predictable outcome. If I was a seasoned user, I'd know what to check. I figure that I've got about another 23 days left to bail out... I hope I don't have to. I'll call tech suppt. next and hope my luck is good. I really do hope it is just that I'm missing something. Thanks, two EDITED: Tech Support was excellent. Problem solved - just another case of user/beginner error.

Hi, My 2009 evaluation version has expired. I've installed the purchased version of 2010 and wish to remove the 2009 - Win XP Pro. There is no record in Add/Remove Programs of either Vectorworks or Nem... . I hesitate to just delete all so-named folders. Has anyone seen this before - have any suggestions? Many thanks, two

Hi, I'm working with 2009 eval version until they get my serial number for my 2010 purchase sorted out, on Monday, I hope. Meanwhile, as a rank beginner, here are a couple of hopefully not too "rank" questions. How do I turn off the Tool Set icons which I don't wish to see or plan to work with - such as machine components or welding symbols? Can I just choose an Architectural interface? I seem to remember this from somewhere, but cannot find it now. Will I be able to find parametric joists, such as steel bar joists and similar components somewhere? Is this a plugin or a library item? Many thanks, two

Hi, I just opened and tried to install the new Designer 2010 as delivered to me today via Fedex. I get the error "You have entered an invalid serial number. Please re-enter." Well, I did that - about 5 or 6 times - from the serial number on the sticker on the dvd case. No luck. Any clues? I tried repeatedly to call the Nem... in MD, USA and they are closed for the weekend, even though they were still open when I began calling. Additionally, I paid for the professional full software with my own card and name as an upgrade to an existing academic account and the invoice says "Sold to: (the company address I had it shipped to - not me or my name)" My confidence in the Nem... might be fading a little. Not a helpful start out with the VW. Is this a regular kind of expectation? Any inside tips necessary on how, in the US, I might pursue to straighten this out. I admit I am peeved as I planned to spend the weekend digging into the program, the Pickup book I bought with it, and enjoying a change from Revit. Many thanks

@ SHAUN Thanks for the welcome. I checked out your website and appreciate your work there. I too have used TCAD in the past - up until about r.12, I think. It got a bit buggy then but may have recovered by now it seems. TCAD is what got me interested in 3D modeling from the start - r.7! You are right about getting away from Autodesk. There are some options now days, but it is always a struggle for the others to keep up with Adesk's budget which is the size of a small country's. For 2D/limited3D work I have begun to use Bricscad 9Pro because it is capable, will export .3ds with a plugin, is inexpensive and the developers seem to be actively involved. Best, two

I'm new to Vectorworks 2009 trial version and am pleased so far. although I use many of the software mentioned in this thread, I am looking to VW capabilities to solve the price barrier of Revit, to export to Cinema 4D for renders and also to produce contract documents. I would probably stay with Revit except that I cannot afford it (for personal use in free lance projects) plus VW seems much more capable for more organic modeling so far. My pipeline now and before becoming proficient with Vectorworks begins in ACAD Architecture or in Revit more lately, then out to Cinema 4D. Occasionally I need to get some massing fast for architecture, so I do this in Cinema 4D and sometimes in Rhino 4 ( really dislike the models that Sketchup makes - ugh...) then plop them into Revit for reality checks and sections etc. Usually before a project is finished in Revit, it will be taken into Cinema for renders for presentations. As mentioned above Rhino 4 is a wonderful modeler and is fairly intuitive for autocad users - should be - the developers of Rhino wrote much of the original ACAD code as employees, I believe. I've used Rhino since r.2 - off and on over the years. The best thing for me and for my "other job" studio seems to be the seamless import of dimensionally accurate models from Vectorworks to Cinema and back while all the while developing a set of construction docs. I am looking forward to the progress noted above for 2010. I never would have looked at VW if Revit had not been so expensive and it appears that VW is capable of much better organic shapes than Revit - today anyway. Whatever happens, I doubt I'll give up using Cinema 4D for renders and quick massing models with stunning lighting etc. Been using Cinema since version 7 ART. This thread has been really valuable to me as a new user, so thanks very much. two

Hello folks, I'm a new user of Vectorworks '09 - only about 4 days into the evaluation. If there is a thread for newbies, let me know and I'll re-post. I come from Autocad and clones and from Revit. I'm very much looking forward to working with Vectorworks as it seems to pick up nicely in modeling where Revit leaves off. I have looked into a number of the free tutorials and faq.s. I'm trying to understand the space which I would call "model" space which is the first screen upon opening the program. I've set up my own template based on US feet and inches @ 1/4" = 1' 0". The rectangle in this opening screen looks to be the same idea as a "drawing limits" in other 2D programs as it bounds the printable space that would be available in a full sheet viewport @ 1/4" on 24"x36" "paper". Is this right? What else may I be missing with this rectangle on the screen? Is it possible to make this rectangle a light or transparent gray, or even just a solid light transparent rectangle? I've tried a few 3D modeling basics from a tutorial and in isometric + other views, the rectangle is still there. Is this necessary - can it be turned off altogether? Would I want to? I haven't explored printing viewports yet. Still just trying to get all the necessaries for a good file setup. Will I find some answers there? Many thanks, nice forum here, best wishes! two
