  1. @bob-h what exactly do you want to say with your post in a vw architect vs revit lt thread? rob
  2. i've read this thread and watched the links. a few remarks: 1. in the eu over the years there were many interventions by the competition commissioners against presumable monopoly deals and standards forcing. they will surely mandate the open bim. unless adesk buys them all, that is 2. adesk was interested in ifc up to the point they bought revit in 2002, then they blocked their participation in the ifc evolution process. the releasing of revit lt without an ifc export is the best proof for this. 3. the technology changes every 3-5 years, the buildings last for 50-100 years. dr bill east (of buildingsmart alliance) in his 'unified theory of bim' presentation, overview chapter: buildingsmart alliance education course part 3 of introduction videos, ca 4:20: 'we need information that is independent of the format of the media and of the software in which it's used. sounds a lot like open bim standards.' this last point is extremely important for the life cycle management of the buldings, but overlooked by many. once more, happy easter everyone rob edit: one more link: shoegnome blog
  3. and how about the dwg exports, reported widely as spoiled? happy easter everyone rob
  4. (..) Its the other way around Mate <-> Its VWs BIM AEC Model that is dysfunctional HTH can you expand on this, please? rob
  5. parametric objects is the key. everything that is not parametric should be a placeholder geometry, then defined by the shop drawings. and the germans will wake up, no worry. if they already didn't rob
  6. in the traditional construction process there are two design methods: i call the first 'a german one', and the second 'a french one'. in the first method a designer designs everything to the detail, puts it on a 'polierplan' (the main graphical document in the technical project phase) and provides all links to the detail (and other) views. the second method is to endow the drawings with accurate known geometry and with the placeholders that will then be replaced by the detailed drawings from the manufacturers and shop drawings from the contractors. the placeholders have their more or less schematic geometry and the description of how the future objects have to look like. the first method is cumbersome, but it retains the full control, the second one is flexible and more cooperative, yet requires a further design commitment of various stakeholders. how do you think they both fit into the bim environment? rob
  7. what file format we're talking about? rob
  8. kenneth, you can also try here: drafting in vectorworks blog rob
  9. ok, i must withdraw the caveat. the original stair object wasn't flipped nor mirrored, but it has been created with the older version of the software (afair 2010). i have imported the projects into the vw2011, and then vw2012, but haven't changed anything in the stair settings. so the ifc-export was buggy. the new created stair from the vw2012 exports to the ifc correctly. sorry for the mess. rob
  10. i don't know yet, but i'm in the course of checking it. additionally my last model of a small residential house (vw2012) has the stair right in the ifc model. maybe the old stair settings (vw2010/2011) were buggy, and the new ones are not anymore? rob
  11. another question from the ifc corner: i have two garage storeys, accessible from the plot level. the one, to the higher garage (-1), displays correctly in the ifc model, the other one (to the garage level -2) is moved in the ifc model to the other side of the adjacent wall (pictures). can anybody help: why this strange placement of the lower ramp? i enclose the object settings for both ramps in the vw file. the third narrow ramp to the left is the pedestrian entry, is ok in both vw file and ifc. thx, rob
  12. is it a bug? i don't have a vw2013, then maybe it's been already addressed. rob btw, i've had a similar issue with a ramp object, which was placed in the ifc model on the other side of the garage entry wall, afair in v2010. i'll check this one with the v2012, too.
  13. another thing with the ifc output: the stair object is positioned properly on the ground floor, but in the ifc model it's flipped vertically and moved all the way down. is there an ifc handle anywhere for the placed objects, or have i made anything wrong while placing the stairs? thx, rob
  14. hi, i've just tried to export my project to an ifc model. i have some walls, that are either normal wall class, and a structural glass, too. they are destined to be of glass. the rendering material is everywhere glass, overriding any class setting. the automatic assignment doesn't let them be displayed as glass panes in the ifc model, they wind up opaque. the entities ifcwallstandardcase, ifccurtainwall don't work. the only one that works is the ifcwindow. and this can't be true. is there any assignment (apart from the fact that bim is not designed to manipulate the entities manually) that could work? either in the wall class name or the data fields or anywhere else? can anybody help? thx, rob
  15. jeez, and i seriously thought about upgrading. from what i read the bugs still balance the value of gbxml output and the likes. i must definitely watch the 'what's new in vw2013' novedge's webinar, though... rob
  16. i thought you did install the sp1 before. so you've installed sp1 once again? rob
  17. it is not very practicable. in archicad you'd have to do boolean operations in order to cut in the slab parts on each floor which is not a very good idea. generally nobody errects one single wall going all the way up (except for some acoustically separated shafts, like an elevator one). normally each wall stands on an appropriate slab underneath, or at least on a concrete tie. rob update: ok, it can work for structural glass walls or other sheathings...
  18. i've just watched an autodesk presentation: 'demystifying cobie standards and how to integrate them into bim applications' and i start to wonder again. cobie is an ipd standard for the integrated project handout and there's not a word about it in the whole vw2012 documentation (is it in 2013 perhaps?). autodesk has developed (or bought) a cobie toolkit module for revit, which produces the attributes documentation (required 16 cobie spreadsheets) compliant with the buildingsmart/aia project delivery standards and what do nna people do in this direction? rob
  19. i've found the 3rd pty tools on the buildingsmartalliance website (checking cobie files, at the bottom). i wonder why there's nothing on this in the vectorworks documentation... rob
  20. some items may change their positions while manipulating the dimension lines (f.i. adding new witness lines), when there are constrains. a position lock would be great. rob
  21. we try to avoid such mistakes via dimensioning examination. i can't believe the wall moved by itself, too. i suspect the wrong position from the beginning. rob
  22. i've searched the forum for some information about the topic, but to no avail. does anybody know if the is a possibility to generate a cobie fileset from the ifc export? if not, are there any 3rd party tools for this? thx, rob
  23. thanks, vincent. i'll give it a try. rob
  24. allow me to append to this thread. my exports to .dwg from a vw2012 don't look ok either. the thing is the messed up window/door marker appearance (mirrored or turned upside down). i can't figure out a vw setting to make it look properly. it may lie on my incompetence, though... rob
  25. i use an intuos 3 too (mac), but not with the pen, which i find better for freehand drawing/animation and not very much suitable for cad. for working in vw i use a wireless wacom mouse instead. rob
