  1. Solution was quite simple and I'm a little embarrassed I didn't think of it, but I'm leaving this post up in case someone comes along looking for the same answer.

A handful of symbols across several layers had accidentally locked along with some reference geometry when the file was last open. I made a custom selection vectorscript to select all objects with that record format and ran it on each layer to look for symbols with the grey selection boundary.

  2. Hello,

I'm using Vectorworks 2018 SP6 (Fundamentals, Spotlight, Renderworks). For the last several months I've been maintaining a manual link between Vectorworks and Excel by going through a process of importing a CSV made from Excel as a worksheet and pasting values one column at a time into a database worksheet linked to a symbol record format. I made a couple of other posts with problems I had when I was first getting started with this project but unfortunately got no help. Once I finally got it working, albeit cumbersome, it had no real issues. I haven't needed to update either the Excel file or the Vectorworks file for a couple months but now I have new information to incorporate. All of the steps leading up to this point have been identical to what I did for months, but now I get an error message when I try to paste cells into this worksheet: "The cells you are trying to change do not allow pasting." I've never seen this before, doing it this way has always worked up to this point.

Here's my troubleshooting process so far:

    • Close without saving and restart computer
    • Check it's the exact same number of cells copied as attempted to paste into
    • Check file isn't accidentally open read only somehow (I can change anything else)
    • Make sure correct Excel file was opened (I even opened an older version but got the same error)
    • Try copying small groups of cells, which worked but only sometimes (also isn't a realistic option for 17 columns and nearly 2000 rows)

Not sure what to try next. Any help is appreciated, thank you

  3. When creating a PDF, the "Export Classes as PDF Layers" option doesn't work the way I expected it to and I'm curious if there's another way or a setting that I'm missing.

I have one main symbol that I'm using for this project that has an attached record format and text objects in the symbol that are linked to record fields. Unfortunately, there's not enough space in the symbol to spread these text objects out, so I put them all on the center point of the symbol and put each one in a separate class. This way, I can turn classes on/off to see the information that I'm interested in. I'd like that functionality to exist in an exported PDF as well so that end users without VW experience can access the information as well. However, I'm seeing that in the PDF, all of the text objects respond to the PDF Layer/VW class that the symbol was assigned to rather than the class they're assigned to individually. Right now, all of my symbols are in the None class, so when I change the visibility of the None class/PDF layer in the PDF viewer, all of the text objects in the symbols follow suit. I've tried publishing both sheet layer viewports and saved views, as well as directly exporting from the active design layer, all with the same results.

Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated!

  4. To anyone who happens to stumble upon this post looking for the same answer, I haven't found a setting to disable the automatic-math that's happening, but I have found a workaround:

    File > Import > Worksheet

Select all cells (or at least the cells that exhibit the problem)

Format > Cells... > Number tab (default tab) > Select the "Text" radio button > OK

Select cell A1 only, then reimport the same worksheet the same way

I'm not certain exactly how it works, but it appears that importing a worksheet while a worksheet is open overwrites the worksheet from the selected cell. Unfortunately, you can't overwrite a database worksheet this way, as that would completely solve another problem I'm having.

  5. Hello all,

I'm trying to import a CSV into my VW 2018 file via File>Import>Worsheet. Up until this point my workflow has been working fine, but I'm now trying to import the latest version of this CSV generated by Excel that now has cells that start with "E" and have a digit or two after, sometimes with a hyphen.  Unfortunately, it appears that VW tries to do math on those cells and replaces them with 0e+000 and displays them as 0 if there's a hyphen (see "Worksheet View of Imported CSV.PNG) or some negative number if there isn't a hyphen

    What I've tried so far:

    - Restarting Vectorworks and my machine. Doesn't seem like the kind of problem to be resolved by this but it was worth a shot.

    - Using a Tab delimited worksheet instead. Same problem.

    - Checking that excel exported the data properly (see "Excel view before exporting CSV.PNG" and "Notepad++ view of imported CSV.PNG"). The exported file opens in other programs just fine.

    - Changing the cell format in the VW worksheet via Format>Cells... Doesn't help, and changing them to text just makes them display "0e+000" instead of 0.

    - Manually typing the data into the cells (due to the volume of cells that will eventually be involved in this, it's not a long term option but just as a test). It did work though if I first changed the cell format, but otherwise didn't work.

Is there a setting somewhere for reverting all cell formats to text when importing CSVs? Do you know of another setting somewhere that might cause this or some workaround I could consider?

I appreciate any help you can provide, thank you for your time!

EDIT - If it helps, a friend suggested I try to recreate the problem from scratch, so I made a new csv and vwx, imported it as I had been and got the same problem.

  6. Working with VW 2018 SP6.

I have several objects on a design layer (that I need to keep on the same layer for our workflow), and a small cropped hidden line viewport on a sheet layer showing just a small handful of those objects in relation to eachother. With the hidden line options all toggled off and the smoothing angle at 0° (which I believe should make it the lowest quality and least graphics intensive, correct me if I'm wrong), my computer immediately crashes any time I try to update it. There are two section view ports with limited depth and width that do just fine, but the plan view crashes it every time.

On a separate, smaller drawing, I happened to notice that viewports were rendering objects outside the scope of the crop. That makes perfect sense for any of the rendering modes with lighting since those objects might be in reflections or cast relevant shadows, but I fail to see how that helps a Hidden Line rendering. What I think is happening is that the viewport attempts to render the entirety of that large design layer and it's simply too much to handle. What I'd like is the viewport to only render the few objects included in the crop, the same way the section viewports do.

Is this possible? Thanks in advance!!
