  1. @Pat Stanford bullseye...You are quite right, thanks for that. The site model and 99% of my work are georeferenced, I now see three section maps which are near the orgin. I assume if I move these closer to the rest of the files contents that it should behave better? I recall a VW webinar when they spoke about user orgin and internal orgin...I guess I'll have to look for that. Thanks again Pat.

  2. Hello everyone.

I have an issue with the graphics on a site model I'm working on. In the attached video you can see that when I change the viewing angle of the model I lose large portions of the model from my view. I recall this occurring to me before with another file, I'm just trying to sort out the cause. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Edit. If I change the view plan from Orthogonal to normal perspective the issue disappears. Any ideas as to why that would be?

  3. Update: After much research and debate we purchased a M1 Max with 32 GB Ram and a 2TB drive.

Part of our decision was based on the fact that Apple was showing a 6-8 week delivery wait for the 64 GB unit, as well some of the tests we watched on Youtube showed very little performance difference between the 32 and 64 GB models when under stress.

We will be putting it through some workflow stress tests in the coming days and if needed we'll return the 32 GB unit and upgrade to the 64 GB.

Our first interesting note, on my old Imac Pro 10 core 64 GB ram, VW start up was 32 seconds. On the Macbook pro it was 13 seconds...

As far as monitors are concerned, I'm nervous that anything I buy will be visually annoying now that I'm used to the 27" iMac Retina display.  My eyes are getting worse with age, and VW UI icon design legibility has gotten worse as well.  Based on online research, I'm thinking of these 27" & 32" BenQ models that have a "CAD/CAM" setting.  Both are 3840x2160, so one has a larger screen size while the other has better pixel density (the 27" iMac is 5120 × 2880):

Does anyone have any monitor advice or wisdom to offer?

We desperately needed to upgrade one of our old work stations, a MacPro 2021, and decided to go with the Macbook pro M1 MAX as well as an external monitor. We opted to go with the LG ultra fine 23.7" 4k model. Previously I was working on a 27" Imac Pro and was concerned with the LG being a smaller screen size and lower resolution. I'm finding that I prefer the 4k over the 5k apple monitor, at 59 years of age my eyes have been changing and not for the better. I'm thinking that if need be I could add another 24" LG.

  5. @line-weight thanks for tagging me on this post. Great to here that your Mac mini is having a better time with VW and TM. I also noted the system requirements page and the fact that the M1 Pro or max chip is not supported (as well as Monterey).

I have spent quite a bit of time looking on the web for info and find that it's a bit confusing especially when I see video like this. It seems like TW motion is running fine with a new M1 Pro unit.

  6. Thank you very much for your valued feedback @zoomer
Our timing to purchase a new unit is not great given the lack of testing as you noted.

I agree that 64 gb for ram on a long term machine is a good idea.

Years ago I purchased an Imac and with the lower cost chip, at the time I believe it was an i5, big mistake.

Thank you again, we shall see where this journey takes us.

  7. Hello everyone

There has been some discussion both on this forum and on many Youtube channels about the differences between the M1 Pro and Max chips.

We are needing to replace one of our workstations, a 2012 Mac Pro, that has served us very well over the past decade. We are considering a Macbook Pro and find it difficult to determine how important the Pro vs Max chip upgrade would be to our workflow using VW and Twinmotion. We would be purchasing the maximum amount of RAM available in each case, either 32 GB for the Pro and 64 GB for the Max chip.

We seem to be getting into much larger land design projects, the latest using an 800+ acre site model.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has made the leap to the new M1 Macbook pro, what configuration they decided on, and how they find the performance. One video which has caused some doubt in my mind regarding the Max chip set is shown below. Saying that the stress test used is most likely not going to be replicated in our day to day workflow.

My gut instinct is that the Pro chip with 32 GB of unified memory would be more than enough.

Thank you in advance for any comments or feedback.

  8. @line-weight a question for you if you don't mind, how does your mac mini perform with both VW and Twinmotion open?

We are looking to add a M1 Macbook pro but trying to sort out our requirements and how the Max vs Pro chips might meet those.

We were going to hold out for the updated Mac mini but can't wait that long. Thanks

  9. @jeff prince @Tom W. @Benson Shaw thank you very much for looking at this.

@jeff prince yes I pulled these contours from QGIS (which I'm in a steep learning curve, I'm taking a fantastic online course which is a huge help) with the hopes of creating a site model. The model you created looks great, thanks! It might be a bit flatter than actual as my contour intervals where 2 meter.

Jeff I'm not sure how you discovered the Modify by record tool but it worked like a charm. I discovered that I made an error while exporting from QGIS as I did not extract the Z value correctly. No worries as VW has the tool to change this. Amazing.

I'm also surprised that the resulting model is pretty stable given it's 850 acres.

Thank you all so much for helping me learn more about this software. I

  10. Hello Everyone, i hope you are all having a great day.

I have been trying to import a shapefile which was created (exported) in QGIS.

The shapefile has the elevation data within it but when I import this via Import Shapefile command I get contours but these are regular polylines.

When I've imported shapefiles in the past it's been a pretty stratighforward event.

Thanks in advance to any help.

Below images are screen shots from QGIS showing the elevation data, then on VW.

  11. Hello everyone.

A question that I'm sure has a straightforward answer. I have a small curved retaining wall that's base is going to follow the existing terrain.

I'm trying to provide a stone mason with the area or face of the wall in sq ft but for the life of me I don't see any area measurements available in the OIP.

    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Increasingly I see open source GIS as an essential (at least for the landscape consultancy workflow), it's becoming very mature, most CAD operations, I can imagine in two years doing most of my work using QGIS and just the occasional work in VW.

Interesting to read this @unearthed I'm soon to be taking a QGIS course from the Regrarians...http://www.regrarians.org/product/qgis-for-mapping-and-design/

Are you using QGIS on farm scale projects?

Thanks J. Wallace - but that's not what's happening here.

    I've update the site model.

Also the site model is NOT outlined in red/white nor is the "update" button in the OIP red.

Updating the site model doesn't send the hardscape to the surface nor does it get rid of the "update' outline.

I had some challenges with hardscape objects in 2019 but these seemed to diminish with the current 2021.

I see that is what you are running.

You might want to post the file if you can.

I usually use pads and place hardscape items on top of these.
