  1. I see the sweep command which is what I would use with ADT. Will this sweep a shape like a cast stone watertable or cornice along a wall? I am not sure what the command wants me to do. I checked out the extrude command and it basically extrudes a profile shape that you have to rotate and position where you want it to go. This would make a cast stone watertable shape I guess. will it miter around a corner? I guess there is no other way of doing this besides drawing different wall types and adding a shape for a cap?
  2. What you are showing is like cutting a shape out of a wall. What I am referring to is the opening topic in this thread. adding 3' of brick or stone wainscot to a wall with a cap of sloped brick or cast stone or stucco detail at the top. It seems you have to draw it separately instead of adding it to a wall. I am looking into the extrude and sweep command to see what they do. In ADT you add a new wall component and give it dimensions, thickness and height and position in the wall and you end up with a row of brick wainscot attached to a wall. If you want to add a watertable to the top of the wainscot you draw the shape you want and sweep it across the the wall component. When you cut a section of that wall, all the components and real world profile of the wall section are generated. VW will show the components and I assume it will show a shape extruded along a wall but I have not tried this yet.
  3. I am trying to understand what turning on auto classing in the Standard Naming dialog does. I have set my layer standard to AIA-NCS and some things like dimensions go on the right class but some things go on the current layer. With walls, depending on the prefix ext- or int- it will put them on the appropriate class but it uses the VW class names not the current class standard AIA-NCS. Do I have to set this in each wall style? what exactly does do? If I open the library walls file and set the standard will it convert all the class names to AIA standard? If I want every user in my office to automatically use the same auto classing for walls, doors etc., what is the best way to set this up? Is it something that can be configured with a shared set of preferences or a template drawing or is this set in the plugin that draws a wall or inserts a door or window? Do I have to set up every wall style on every machine to go on the right class? Is there a global style manager where I can edit all the wall styles or do they have to be edited on insertion. I guess if I open the library walls file I can edit all the defaults in one file but do these get updated and overwritten when VW is updated? Should I create a custom library for the edited wall styles and keep that in my workgroup folders?
  4. Thanks for the replies. I will be setting this project up by floor but I would like to be able to have a master file with all my drawing sheets together to manage title block info and issue dates. Otherwise I might as well do what we always do and reference a border into the drawings. This is kind of off topic but I have my head into this right now. I have made a custom title block and I like the drawing setup routines that insert and manage the Tblock info. I noticed the issue data is a separate record. Do I link that to the i-info fields Like I did with the project and sheet info? With the Ellicott Heights project I did convert them all to 09vwx and I was able to browse through the files to see how everything was structured but if I try to select something or edit an object it crashes. It did the same with the Laundry Lofts sample too.
  5. Is there no way to attach a component to a wall and give it a different height as the rest of the wall? This was a great feature in ADT/ACA. Applying a texture to fudge the look doesn't help with creating a representative section. What about adding a watertable to the wainscot? Is there any kind of "sweep" function to add a horizontal component profile across a wall?
  6. I have been playing with the BIM in practice samples and they keep crashing VectorWorks. I am not able to work with them at all. This is a concern because I am starting a large project and we just purchased upgrades to VW2009 for all our computers. I have installed the first service pack and it seems I am having more trouble with these samples since I I stalled the service pack. I will be setting up this big project by floor and not all in one like the examples but I hope it isn't too much for our computers. Most of the other computers are slower than mine. I will need to set this project up similar to the Elllicot heights sample. It is no where near as big as that so I hope we will be ok. I would like to hear some input from others using 2009 regarding what computer hardware they use and the size of projects they work with.
  7. Thanks for all the replies folks and thanks for explaining the user file on a server issue. The quote about running vectorworks from any computer is kind of misleading and we wanted to set up each computer so everyone could run their own workspace on any computer in the office. I was planning on setting up a separate user folder for each user on the server just for easy access but I suppose there isn't much point. Copying the workspace files to each computer will work. I am working on setting up the workgroup at my office in preparation for upgrading to VW2009. Right now I have one copy of 09 to experiment with. Thanks for all the input and I am sure I will have a lot more questions. I really hated Vectorworks 12 but 2009 has some really great features. Dave
  8. The sample project is very helpful in understanding how to set up a project in a multi user environment. The project is quite large though and takes forever to open up. I am using this sample to create a smaller version with a very basic and much smaller building to help explore how the whole thing is put together. Besides the structure of the project drawings it is important to set up your resources and workgroup folders so all users are using the same symbols and styles. I have set up a folder on our server to keep all the common resources, project folders and individual user folders so they can be accessed by all users on any computer. Changing the user folder location creates a folder structure for everything but you have to populate it with the custom content you want everyone to use. I am still figuring it out but I am making some progress in understanding it. I will post any questions or revelations I come up with as I go.
  9. Hi, I have been experimenting with setting up user and project folders for a workgroup setup. I want to set the user folder to a location on the server and I am confused about what this is actually doing. The first time I tried setting the user folder it copied the folder structure to the new location on the server but none of the files. Is this what is supposed to happen just to keep the folder structure the same and then I add the files I want? The next time I chose to not copy the folder structure and it reset back to the defaults which was fine. I changed the user folder a third time and told it to copy the structure to one level above where I had my personal user folder and it ran in a loop for a while making about 100 copies of my old user folder. I am not sure why it did this. What I want is for users to be able to access their workspace settings from any computer but all references and project folders will reference a common location on the server. I think I almost have it worked out but it is a bit confusing. I am quite surprised that there is hardly any discussion here about multi-user environment. Do most people just not set it up for multi-user and share files the old fashioned way?
  10. I should add that all my details are manually drawn and not taken from a model. It is also one sheet per file which is the way they do all their drawings. I could see the need to viewport things if you have several different sheets in a file. Dave
  11. I just finished working on a few detail sheets and was told by others to use viewports but that just seemed like a lot of extra work and trouble. What I wound up doing is insert my border using the document setup routine. I inserted it in a 1/4 scale design layer just because all other sheets will be set up this way. I created a design layer for every scale I will need. 1/4", 3"=1" and 1 1/2"=1". My border appears scaled in each design layer with the view settings for layers set to show all or gray others. No view ports are needed and you draw your details, dims, text and sections in place where they need to go within the border on the appropriate design layer.
  12. Hmmm, OK. It is a problem sometimes selecting all the bounding objects in a complex shape if it wasn't drawn as a polyline. So there is no way for the fill or hatch to automatically find the bounding objects like an AutoCAD hatch does? AutoCAD does adjust the hatch if you stretch the bounding objects. Granted, it does not always work but a hatch can be redone in a second if it doesn't. Sorry for the constant references to AutoCAD but I am just trying to find a common reference point from what I am used to coming from 15 years using AutoCAD and 10 of those years using ADT. It's a really good job though and it is a MAC office so I have to get used to VectorWorks. Sigh.
  13. This may be a stupid question but is there a way to add a hatch by picking an interior point? Do I really have to trace the entire boundary to add a hatch?
  14. Thank you for the replies. I have a somewhat related question regarding the drawing label tool. Is there any way to customize this tool to use a custom style title? It has options for a circle or square circle but is there a way to change the definition of the title? This office uses a different style and I like how this tool works at least how it puts the scale in automatically. I am just curious if stuff like this can be customized. Also, the title defaults to the drawing file name but I am using it for detail titles as well. Is this tool designed to keep track of section or detail references in a drawing set or is there another tool that does this when you are referencing other sheets or a specific detail on another sheet or is this all manual entry? What I am thinking is that if I have a few sheets of details that reference different sheets and for some reason the referenced sheet numbers change, is there a way to keep track of this and have all the referenced titles update? Wishful thinking? I know Revit does this so I am just curious if it can be done with vector works.
  15. Yea I am Missing ADT. I am using it occasionally through VMware on a mac but its not very stable. Brudgers wrote: "u have to create: a symbol (without text) a record format a peice of text. Then: attach the record format to the symbol select both the text and the symbol menu--->tools--->records--->link text to record" This is what I did but it doesn't give me an option to change the field when I insert it into a drawing. I thought it would work the same way I set up my border and title block where you update the fields from the object info pallet. Maybe I missed something in creating my record. I added the field I needed but it doesn't give me the option to change the field when it is inserted into a drawing. I am thinking this should work like an attributed block in ADT/ACA. It worked for the border I made but that was a little different. Thanks for the reply.
  16. HOWDY, I AM NEW TO VECTORWORKS BUT COME FROM 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE USING ADT. I AM TRYING TO MAKE A SIMPLE DETAIL BUBBLE THAT IS SIMPLY A CIRCLE AND A LINE WITH A NUMBER IN THE CIRCLE. I HAVE MADE THE SYMBOL AND CREATED A RECORD AND ATTACHED THE RECORD TO THE SYMBOL AND ATTACHED THE TEXT TO THE RECORD BUT IT WILL NOT LET ME CHANGE THE TEXT. I WAS THINKING THIS WOULD WORK LIKE THE BORDER TEXT WHERE YOU HAD THE OPTION TO CHANGE THE INFORMATION ATTACHED TO THE SYMBOL. WHAT AM I MISSING?
